Eric Campbell hits a ball foul by 15 feet ... ... with so much english that it ultimately rolls fair. Fair, unlike life, which is not fair. [youtube:1copm3ix]w24gP27ach8[/youtube:1copm3ix]

But he did pitch better. It would be hard not to, but he did, certainly. The walks were partially a result of some squeezing. A little offense in the first seven innings yesterday would have gone a long way. He'd have left with a lead, and gotten the front half of the bullpen working for him instead of the back half and the same performance would have been framed as a meaningful step forward.

That 1-2-3 double-play was, like, the only truly hurtful outcome possible at that moment. I didn't even think about it as a possibility. What the hell. The difference in yesterday's game was double plays. Both teams had the opportunity to shut the other down at opportune moments, and the Marlins' defense was more adept and their baserunners faster.

Makes me think the Mets shouldn't have chosen last night to rest the big Yo. Games against the Marlins are worth twice as much money in the standings at this point. They're the only team still in the Wild Card race that the Mets have left on their schedule. That's the team you've got to be stacking your lineup against.

He's in a game. And he just doubled to left center and celebrated like he hit a hole-in-one.

Coming in late with this morning's standings, but I think I finally got the playoff percentages right. Not that kind of GiDP. Blugh.

Barraclough missed his target ever time. Even a GiDP isn't an outright disaster here, Conforto.

Shouldn't have swung at that first pitch, Wilmer. Hang in there.

Eli? I'm proud to report that the Krusty krack dates back over 15 years to my sig line of 2001. And that slovenly but heroic clown did, ultimately, arrive.

Our offensive line of a bullpen totally needed a backup center.

Man, you can't give a team two better double-play balls, but it's like Gordon and Suzuki can't legally be doubled up. Keef's right, though. Flores should be charging a little more. Part of why I advocate for instead sticking him at third, man. And now, Suzuki scores the game's first run.

No, there's no way indeed. Terry is terry-fied of moving just one. I was just flying the flag of a differing philosophy. Back to Walker. This went from he'll be back shortly to he'll be back never pretty soon, didn't it? From not particularly serious to season ending surgery. I also glean from Terry and Sandy's comments that Walker's decision wasn't particularly what the Mets were recommending.

Yeah, the Mets are just a laundering scheme for other teams.

All of us here at Mets Roster Updates, Inc. love September 1. It's when we first met Mookie and Hubie, and Timo and Melvin, and Dario Alvarez and Juan F. Berenguer. A depleted team finds new life on September 1, if only for an illusory moment. Long live September 1. I think what the Mets are banking on, to the extent that they are banking, is his superior second half numbers. If that fails, well, besides being a palindrome, his name anagrams to "salsa."

Recidivist Met Eric Young, Jr. prepares to begin a third tenure in New York, acquired at the deadline by the Yankees.

Jim Mann's last name looks like a palindrome if you squint. Players with palindromic last names that spring to mind: Toby Harrah Preston Hannah Robb Nen (If he went by "Bob," he could have been a double.)

I don't know what's going on, but Baseball Prosectus, who usually update their odds during the 4:00 AM hour, haven't done it yet for this morning. So ignore the odds columns for the time being. Suffice it to know that the Mets have done what only the bold and the crazy dare to attempt. They have stolen from Pirates. Confetti will be made from the shreddings of the losing covers.

At the same time, Sheriff Bart was originally intended to be Richard Pryor. It ended up being Pryor who advocated for Cleavon Little, who was always a ham. In Start the Revolution Without Me, he and Donald Sutherland got to be part of two comic pairings, as both played two roles.

That was a shit sandwich for Colorado to eat. They were red hot and sneaking into the periphery of the playoff picture. The double header sweep would have been a helluva day's work to sleep on.

Frayed Knot wrote: Plus why burden Jose with his 2nd new position in two months? That indeed might be Terry's exact position. The answer I'd give is that it's not really new and there's reason to believe he'd be more effectively deployed there for the Mets.

That's an interesting deal. Good for the Ashleys. All three of them. Salas will be the first Metsican since 2010, when both Ollie Perez and Elmer Dessens represented Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos for Los Mets. Tough break for you, Donald Trump.

Really? I think hands and arm is where Wilmer measures up. It's the need for speed in the middle of the diamond and nimble feet around the bag that gives me pause.
