    Resplendent in the hair and shiny in the teeth, Gabriel Arias becomes the second veteran short-time infielder to get claimed from the Mets this week, going to the Cubs for whatever waiver claim fee there is these days. Wore 25, got to the plate five times, and the next time he reaches base for the Mets will be his first. His only start came as a firstbaseman, and if the only way they could think of to deploy him was as a righthanded alternative to Jared Young, then Christopher Morel was a better alternative. On the other hand, with Jorge Polanco now back on the IL, they might have found some utility for him, as Morel and Eric Wagaman are sort of duplicative. Explicit memories, though? I think he made a throwing error on his first chance at shortstop, coming in for mopup duty in that 9-0 loss against the Pirates.

    Please welcome back to the Mets orbit Luisangel Acuña, without whom the 2024 playoff run would have been mighty unlikely. The Mets themselves posted their lineup late, but it looks like Luis Robert is going to himself get welcomed back to Comiskey II as a leftfielder.     Iowa/Colorado seemed like the sort of contest you want to see. A one-nothing score as Iowa's starting pitcher shut out 15 and yielded zero hits. The underdog Iowa had only two outs to go when they swapped pitchers, with the reliever finding himself with the bags juiced, two outs and a full count on the batter. Thrillingly, he got the call, and the strikeout, and Iowa walked off with the win and the combined no-hitter. Unfortunately, well, he got the call on this pitch. Umping is hard.

    What law is that? I'm familiar with Congress and the IRS placing increasing scrutiny on wealthy owners using losses in the sports industry as deductions, but I'm unfamiliar with this four-year law.

    You don't even need the cameras. The Trackman technology is so astute that it can detect a hurtling-and-spinning 103-mph pitch's location relative to the strike zone. It can certainly detect whether a fly ball is inside or outside the foul pole. In fact, I'm pretty certain such data recorded that ball and has been publicly disseminated.

    While you were sleeping, the Mets pulled within two and a half games of Washington, as the Nats were getting mowed down by a vicious performance from Old Skool Jacob deGrom, throwing six innings, striking out 10, and yielding but a single hit and a single walk. HIs bullpen threw three hitless innings for the 1-0 victory. (I told you it was Old Skool.) Drop a line to Jacob with your thanks.

    Down here in Phenix City, the are known as the Rasmi. The two twins, Jimbly and Pastely, headed into Tupelo and nary a soul has heard from them since.

    That's Kinley Rasmus of Phenix City, AL. She is one of only two girls among the rosters of the 20 teams in the tournament, and just threw six scoreless innings of two-hit ball. But Little League has a mandatory rule that forces a manager to pull the pitcher after reaching a maximum pitch count, and after the scoreless game went to extras, her team's bullpen couldn't hold on, and they lost to Washington. I don't have any reporting to support this notion, but I've got to strongly suspect Kinley is the daughter of Colby Rasmus, as he also represented Phenix City in the LLWS back in 1999. Unlike Colby, though, she did it all with a white ribbon in her hair.

    Well, it may feel like a day of reckoning when payroll is issuing large checks to players who are no longer assets or perhaps even active. But I imagine 14 division titles in 15 years, along with three championships (and likely more to come) has allowed them to rake in some crazy money, a large chunk of which they have squirreled away — or more likely put into semiconductor and AI portfolios, that will have ballooned into massive accounts that will dwarf their deferred payroll obligations by the time they are forced to cough the remainder of those salaries up.

    Jomboy with the breakdown of a hugely dramatic Little League game between New Jersey and Connecticut for the Metro Region championship.

    Washington unfortunately tops Texas (who used to be Washington), 6-0. They remain three games behind the fourth-/12th-place Nats. The two other teams within striking distance — Pittsburgh and Cincy — each pulled out one-run wins as well. All are playing AL teams, so their wins didn't even help take some competition down a peg.
