Maybe we should delete this thread and salt the server where it resided.

It's rare a draftee lands in Columbus. With exceptions at the high end, you can pretty much expect guys with three or four years of college to hit Brooklyn, guys with two years of college or junior college to land in Kingsport, and the high schoolers to report to the Gulf Coast League. No 2017 draftees have been sent to Columbia so far.

Looking back at the quote at the top of this thread, we kind of get a foreshadowing of the drama of last week, recalling that Asdrubal Cabrera has a history of going to the media with sizzling quotes when his pride is crossed. Asdrubal Cabrera hits for the cycle with this fantastic jeremiad against being left off of Venezuela's WBC roster, indicting Team Venezuela GM (and "[person]") Carlos Guillen while mostly giving a pass to the team's manager, Omar Vizquel “I will not participate in the World Baseball Classic because Carlos Guillen is the least serious and most deceitful [person] that may exist,” Cabrera said, according to a rough translation of remarks reported by ESPN. “What a shame that Omar Vizquel, with all the respect he deserves, is accepting all this scoundrel-ness.” http://nypost.com/2017/02/09/asdrubal-cabrera-is-furious-over-double-cross/ While those words may seem inadvisably impolitic, New York Post scribe Jonathan Lehman reports, that Cabrera was warned. He was given an explanation. Nevertheless, he persisted.

Manager Terry Collins on the Mets’ injuries: “We came into [last] season, Sports Illustrated had those five guys on the cover. I don’t even know where they all are right now.”

It's a backup catcher's beard, though, isn't it? I couldn't find anything about a Mrs. Bradford for Wifey Watch, but those baseball groupie chickz, who hang around the baseball groupie sites, absolutely HATE the guy. I guess that's a plus, but it wasn't exactly his virtue that they were indicting him for.

Phillies have cut loose outfielder Michael Saunders (signed to a one-year, $8 million contract this offseason, with a $1 million buyout on a second-year option) as well as reliever Jeanmar Gomez (on a one-year, $4.2 million contract). Gomez is one of those mid-level relievers that 2017 is destroying (the Fernando Salas contingent) to the tune of a 7.25 ERA, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Mets consider a minor league deal for him. Because if there's anything more brutal on a fringy reliever than 2017, it's 2017 in July in the Pacific Coast League playing for Las Vegas.

A very 2017 Mets loss for Vegas today. They gave up three in the first, and though they rallied in the ninth, they went down 4-3 with the tying run on base. New starter Mitch Atkins recovered from the rocky first to go 5 1/3 giving up only one more unearned run, but alas, the damage was done. The loss was the seventh in the last 10 for the 51s, dropping them deep into 4th and last in the PCL Southern Division, 13 games back, and even 8 1/2 games out of third. It's about pride at this point, gentlemen. It's notable that Chasen Bradford got the call this time instead of frequent contributor to the 2017 Mets Hansel Robles. And that's because Hansel hasn't had a hand on things since his demotion, putting up a 7.53 ERA in 11 appearances out of the pen. The staff to the last man is getting beat pretty hard, with all ERA's over four (most considerably so) with the exceptions of roster yo-yo Tyler Pill, and reliever Kyle Regnault, who has put up an ERA of just 0.66 in 13 2/3 innings since coming up from Binghamton, but it's largely illusory, as Kyle has walked 11. As noted earlier, Amed Rosario has fallen back to earth. I don't know if that somehow vindicates Sandy Alderson and his decision not to promote the young man, but he and Dominic Smith now have surprisingly similar stat lines: Rosario: .319 / .362 / .472 // .834 with 7 homers and 48 RBI, mostly batting third. Smith: .320 / .371 / .472 // .843 with 8 homers and 45 RBI, mostly batting fourth. The hardest stop bat in the line-up (.324 / .359 / .556 // .915 in 108 AB), interestingly enough, has been that of Kevin Plawecki. It seems that Daniel Alfonzo isn't going to sign, and that's OK, I guess. I mean, a 38th round draft choice isn't the most valuable of commodities. But I'm struck by the same question that irked me when the Mets made J.J. Franco a late-round draft choice in 2014, and earlier when they made Glen Johnson a late-round draft choice in 2007. If the Mets are going to do team employees the grace of drafting their kids, you'd think the parents would give the team a heads-up that their kids prefer to go to school. On the other hand, maybe that's the favor: By selecting the players in the draft, the team makes them better recruitment bait and improves their college prospects. This is a rally of cheapie after cheapie.

Let's get some Chasen Bradford in there!

Very walky game by Nimmo. And he runs out his walks. Curious if he gets a start or two while Conforto heals.

Anthony DiComo has a scoop. [tweet:hvrh4fnq] [/tweet:hvrh4fnq] Don't look for Tebow updates in this space anymore. Florida State League, here we come.

THROW THE PITCH!

Span just isn't a starting centerfielder anymore. He's covering less ground than Granderson out there.

I'd probably have given Monty the chance to finish the inning. But he walks off on a positive.

Man, Raffy is not getting the callz.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Giants do great promos, in contrast to the Mets. How embarrassing is it now that the Braves have joined those clubs completely kicking our promotional asses with the Freeze guy, while the best the Mets can do is junk the awful and derivative "car race" of last year for a similarly lame "car race" this year, the only difference being they pedal instead of run. "Derivative" is too kind a word. It shouldn't be that hard for a New York team to distinguish themselves. Meanwhile, Conforto comes out for Nimmo. Straight to the x-ray machine, young man!

This whole series I've been seeing the sign behind the plate advertising the SAMARDZIJA SHARK SNOWGLOBE. Had to go looking for what that might be. Poor drowning Jeff Samardzija.

Conforto fans, time to worry.

Span looked like crap on that double by Wilmer, like he either lost sight of it or he just doesn't have the extra gear he used too.
