You also get to keep Merandy Gonzalez and Jorge Céspedes. That's not nothing. Part of acquiring Ramos seemed to be about driving up Reed's value at the deadline and then having an asset that would last into the next season. His fate and Reed's seem tied to one another.

Leo Foster looks 15 years old.

I could find nothing—no background, no stats, no scouting reports—on the Mets' new signee out of Caracas. And that's OK, because it kinda helps him live up to his name. Hu iz i? Hu indeed?! But unless I was looking at some sort of false flag operation, the kid has a Facebook page. And he sure looks like an athlete in this shot. "I hope turns out to be a 10-year All-Star. Best of luck to him." — Lucas Duda on Dominic Smith

Cool Todd Zeile Fact: Todd hired Lieutenant Uhura before she was Lieutenant Uhura. [fimg=500:3docilpf]http://www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/dvdboxart/89992/p89992_d_v8_aa.jpg[/fimg:3docilpf]

SHUT UP SHUT UP STOP MAKING ME THINK OF NIQUE I HATE YOU SHUT UP!1!!!!11!

Oh, man, I think about METSSC a lot but NIQUE had escaped my consciousness.

Picking up options on Blevins and Cabrera! Re-signing Bruce and maybe Duda! If they can reach out to Grandy and Walker and Reyes, it'll be the boldest double down ever! Too bad it's too late to gobble Rivera back up! Get me Fernando Salas on line two!

Think OBP, guys!

Get a table setter of an infielder and it's like you have a team.

batmagadanleadoff wrote: Yeah, I thought every baseball fan from my generation knew that. I even remember watching an episode of Hollywood Squares where Peter Marshall was very proud because LaCock had homered the night before. All I remember about Pete was getting Diamond Mind (or Out of the Park) a decade or more ago, and the first game I played was from the 1980 World Series where I played KC against the computer playing Philly, and I was so delighted that I came back here and posted the box score and play-by-play. I figured folks would take an impression but I didn't think anybody would read the whole thing. But JC Lunchbucket scanned down to a the seventh inning where I had executed a double switch and put Pete in the outfield, and he LOL'd at the play-by-play phrasing: "LaCock is inserted."

It's just my impression, but Hoffman may have made a few more friends along the way, with Wagner alienating folks in both Philly and New York. Hoffman's brand also gets some helium from spending 16 years with one team, while Wagner was more of a hired gun.

RBI are a team stat. The best way to get a guy with 100 RBI is to find a good hitter and put someone like Nimmo in front of him.

I didn't get the buzz for this movie at all. Perfectly OK for a first time out, but so much of the script and direction projects that it's ... the filmmaker's first time out. I mean basic stuff is betraying them, too, like the room sound didn't match from shot to shot. Plot elements were left to die off mid-film. What happened to the depressed priest? To the gay kid? She seems intent to not tell just another Catholic school story where the characters are one-dimensional cutouts set up for cheap and easy laughs, and that's great. But she isn't above falling back into just that with a few hapless characters (the substitute director for the second play, the assembly speaker). So the tone shifts weirdly and abruptly to something that seems to come out of a different film. I like that the protagonist isn't another precocious wunderkind. She's dumb and does dumb things in a way that even smart teenagers do (both of her boyfriend choices were doomed from the start), and that kind of makes up for the fact that the star is of post-collegiate age. But I count at least four times that she's just self-centeredly cruel to somebody, and she more or less gets forgiven each time without gaining enough self-awareness to avoid doing it again. I guess that makes it more realistic, but it keeps a real narrative arc from developing. I think it gets a little extra love for being budget-y art house fair but having a young, near-A-list leading lady deigning to lend it her credibility. (After Brooklyn, she probably has an X-Men role or something being pushed at her.) About a third of my theater was inhabited by true believers, guffawing at every turn, just a little too early, indicating that they were repeat viewers. Is this what it's like at Hamilton? On the way out, I found an abandoned handbag at the end of my row. I tried to turn it in to somebody but the theater was staffed by beautiful art school students who were all I didn't know there would be decision making in this job and weren't sure who should take the bag. So my wife tried to find a responsible manager in the house, while I waited at a point of egress. All I remembered of the woman at the end of my row was that her date had long legs. (I tend to get up to pee more than your typical moviegoer.) So that's what I was looking for — a woman without a handbag who had a date with long legs. Imagine my joy when I spotted JUST SUCH A COUPLE. "Excuse me," I said, "Did you misplace your handbag?" She briefly gave me that, "Are you actually cool enough to be talking to me? How nice am I really obliged to be here?" look. It was brief but I recognized it, before she followed up with a terse, "No." I doubled back to find my wife, who hadn't yet connected with management. We thought about going through the purse to find some ID while we waited for a minute or two, when that same bagless woman came back in and asked me "Was that bag gray?" "Yeah." "Then it is mine. I didn't think I had brought it." We turn it over. No, "Thank you." No smile. No nothing. She scuttled on out to her boyfriend waiting on the sidewalk in his skinny jeans with an artful boredom. We had felt a wallet and a phone in there. My wife would rather lose a lung than a handbag. But this young Ladybird fan escaped her transaction with uncool me as quickly and as coldly as she could. I had gone to the trouble of staking out a point of egress looking to find her! I probably shouldn't factor this experience into my assessment of the film, or should I?

I remember being very disappointed with Zeile, but looked it up and he had an .823 OPS in 2000! Replacing a very lamented John Olerud colored a lot of Zeile perceptions. I went to watch the baseball Congressional hearings, and given half a chance to nail Bud Selig to the wall, Congressman Anthony Weiner used his time to mumble barely coherent complaints about not re-signing Olerud. it was a tough loss. That Zeile earned even grumbling acceptance after that was well to his credit.

I post crap at 11pm and change my mind at 8am the following morning but it's still creditable. It's more creditable that some guy/gal getting paid $80K citing unnamed sources and spouting opinion-as-fact to the tri-state area under the guise of an expert journalist or reporter because they have a press pass. Journalists unite! Hey, it's just loaned credibility. Besides, if you change your mind, these votes are editable! And possibly edible!

As I say above, I don't think he's specifically an indictment of their options in the outfield and at first, so much as the opening day starter and planned first stringer in right, and an alternative elsewhere if things go south.

I'm certainly upset with how it marginalizes Nimmo, but it provides depth at four positions, and considering the attrition of 2017, you've got to understand and accept that. Apart from burying Brandon and forcing Conforto to continue to pretend to play center, it's a hedge against Conforto not recovering, Smith not developing, or Céspedes crashing his Testarossa, any or all of which could happen by opening day. I clicked "Dislike," but I could be persuaded to shift to neutral. What's wrong with me that my own poll isn't granular enough for me?

I love how that photo shows the forward thinking Cubs adhering a stitched insignia to their helmets instead of painting on a replica. The Cubs still do this four decades later, although it isn't raised as much so it's not so noticeable unless you're looking for it. I think the Mets would be sartorially wise to experiment with this.

I'm not particularly comfortable with WAR for relievers. A big part of WAR is to treat all events as equal (all homers as equal, all walks ... etc.), no matter the context. I tend to be distrustful of that, but accept it. But with guys whose whole role is about situations (pinch-hitters, spot relievers), it's seems deeply unreliable. That may be largely ironed out when comparing two guys with essentially the same role, but I still am slow to surrender.

Jay Bruce has been (re-)signed for three years and $39 million. Tell us how you feel now to lend credibility to your feelings later. Teenager spends her senior year at a Sacramento Catholic high school rebelling, experimenting, and clashing with her mother. Perhaps the first nostalgia movie set in this century. [fimg=400:3547axsk]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81prIZTJ9JL._RI_.jpg[/fimg:3547axsk]
