The new NBA dunk champion had to beat Larry Nance, Jr., the son of the original champion, Leapin' Larry Nance (1984). But Donovan Mitchell has pedigree of his own, being the son of Mets Director of Player Relations Donovan Mitchell, Sr. [fimg=500:1f3ppkxh]http://www.mlb.com/assets/images/8/1/6/266673816/cuts/1600x900/cut.jpg[/fimg:1f3ppkxh] Here he is with his two favorite hoops mentors, Dunkin' David Wright and Jumpin' Josh Satin. [tweet:1f3ppkxh] [/tweet:1f3ppkxh] Before ascending to his current role, Donovan, Sr. (of Valhalla, NY) managed three seasons in the Minaya-era Mets minors, skippering future Mets such as Daniel Murphy, Josh Thole, Wilmer Flores, and Juan Lagares.

Not sure I want to read about Donald Trump, Jr. getting off.

Maybe it's a good time for that "everybody will feel loved" regime to kick in, because Zack Wheeler looks like he's staring into a very dark place. [tweet:265rbql1] [/tweet:265rbql1]

Mets connections for Jason Vargas: New special assistant to the GM Omar Minaya acquired and later traded away Vargas during his (Minaya's) earlier tenure as Mets general manager. Mets pitching coach Dave Eiland coached him for four years with Kansas City. Vargas' representatives CAA also count Yoenis Céspedes, Todd Frazier, and Tim Tebow on their client list. One thing I've also learned about him is that he has long gotten teased by teammates for looking like a Mexican-American Jon Lovitz. There's some implication in that article that Trump insinuated himself into the group. This is sure going to place Phil Evans on the hot seat.

The only thing about Harvey that's a lock is that he will sweat and stammer incoherently while explaining his BBF shark hunt with the first son.

One thing that comes up regularly among the #RealNews accounts of the president's illicit relationships is his numbskull hatred for sharks.

Wright addressing the media NoW!!!! Still going forward but won't explicitly state a timeline. Video WWW.FACEBOOK.COM Won't even commit to this season. Lots of hate in the comments.

Ted Williams said a nice level swing was a great way to ground out to short. Ralph Kiner may have said the same thing about second. But, you know, trends are trends. I'm all about different strokes for different folks. I rarely get to use that expression literally.

I'm skeptical of the whole thing, but I'm certain the idea isn't to improve homerun output at the expense of on-base percentage. As noted in the Lagares thread: Centerfield wrote: Yeah, I think the added power is only part of it. The whole uppercut swing adds a lot of advantages. 1. Bat stays in the hitting zone longer rather than a downward plane swing which only has one point of contact. So more contact, fewer strikeouts. Also, the idea is more foul balls when you are fooled, so it could lead to more walks. 2. Soft line drives fall in. Soft ground balls rarely find holes. 3. More HR's. Again, I have my own ideas, but take, for instance, Justin Turner, Uppercut Monthly's favorite cover-boy. He upped his batting average by 38 points and still found room to raise his walk rate on top of that, for an overall upgrade of .052 on the old OBP. It's certainly a best-case scenario, but that's the idea, and Lagares has said as much, telling folks not to look for prodigious power output, but hopefully more overall productivity.

As discussed in the Juan Lagares thread, the idea (if only the idea) of guys adding that uppercut to the swing is not just to garner more homers, but more base hits overall. And if one benefit leads to another benefit, more selective pitchers and more opportunities for free passes. It's all wishful, of course, and I'm happy with opportunities granted to Rosario, Cabrera, Reyes, even d'Arnaud, maybe

I always thought Aardsma could have done history a proper and legally changed his name to Ardsma.

I think I've had enough of trying to force a .220s-hitting, former-Yankee-heart-of-the-order batter into the leadoff spot, but if they want to experiment with him in that role exclusively against lefties, I won't set myself on fire or anything. Here's to Lagares coming on strong and making the righthanded part of the role his own.

Are you trying to authenticate before posting?

The Mets started last season seemingly in excellent position, with seven guys primed for the rotation, but instead ended up using 12, of whom 1 1/3 were healthy and effective enough to pitch contender-quality baseball, maybe 1 1/2, if you distinguish Montero's occasional runs of goodness in there and give him 1/6 of a point. Firing on five cylinders is always elusive, but I understand why they want to prime nine guys this year instead of seven, and if somehow injuries don't make the decisions for them, two end up in the minors and two in the bullpen. The main problem is that this cuts against the manager's expressed wish that he have a couple of bullpen backenders with options.

Sorry, I was at a meeting when you returned. Welcome Backman.

There's something to that. Panik's a'ight. Wait, who the hell are you?

Check out that super homestand wrapping around The All-Star Break in July. A travel day off on July 5, even though they are only coming down from Toronto, 10 days of home games, a four-day All-Star Break, a three-game road trip-that-isn't against the Yankees, followed by three games hosting the Padres. Take advantage, Mets. That's like three solid weeks of waking up in your own bed. Well, except for Harvey.

He's not the most consistent beast in the world, but he's been a pretty effective pitcher over his career. Veteran relievers on one-year deals are almost always a workable plan, because they are disposable and buy you time to sort through your younger options, until somebody distinguishes himself. The problem is when you don't have enough players with options in the pen.

Once upon a time, a centerfield position split between Juan Lagares and Matt den Dekker seemed like an enticing way for the Mets to deploy resources. A broken wrist and a need for Jerry Blevins sidetracked that dream, but how curious to wake up this morning and see that it may yet come to pass. Traded by the New York Mets to the Seattle Mariners with Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Joe Smith, Maikel Cleto, Ezequiel Carrera and Mike Carp in exchange for Sean Green, J. J. Putz and Jeremy Reed on December 11, 2008. He started two games for the Mets in 2007, one in May and one in July. As a Met, he has a 12.19 ERA in 10.1 innings. If he becomes a Met again, that ERA can only come down. I hope! Sheesh, I thought that second trade to be unforgettable. The most Omariffic of trades.

The split between those two halves is hard to get past, i'n't it? It's interesting that Omar Minaya has returned and the Mets are re-opening files on Omar-era properties such as Matt den Dekker and Jason Vargas.
