  1. Yeah, I'm sure there are new minds in the front office offering a wholistic and systemic approach, and that's great, but whacking Ramirez while (a) promoting his longtime assistant, and ( retaining Barwis did not fluff my cahnfidence.
  2. Zvon wrote: That wall of deGrom pics is perfectly laid out. That had to be difficult to do. *APPLAUSE! Thanks! I WORK on this stuff!
  3. Well, then, that's, like, seriously burying his lede.
  4. There are backup infielders who can field, and backup infielders who can hit. Heck, if we could do it all, we wouldn't be backup infielders. We'd be infielders. That's oversimplifying it certainly. But I'm Phil Evans and I have big league stick, and I'm searching for a spot in the lineup from which I can swing it. Yeah, I looked kind of tubby last season, but I'm working on that. I doing the South Beach thing. And alternating with the Zone thing. Maybe throw a little Atkins bullshit in there and I'm ready to go. But hey, I realize just slendering down won't make me Ozzie Smith. But there's room this world for the Kevin Mitchells, ore even the Wilmer Floreses. They'll find spots in there for you if you hit. I just need to hit. And hit and hit and hit. And I can hit. Sometimes. I mean, my minor league career OPS is ... well, it's .683. So don't pay any attention to that. I'm a swinger, I tell ya! I'm going to go get a tan and talk to Wilmer. I need you to think about how that's going to work out for me. I'll be over there when you have your answer. 5. I think so too, but Ehalt's implication seems to be that it was straight up.
  6. bmfc1 wrote: Why couldn't they have had both? They would have had to move Cabrera but if so, it would have made the team better which I'm pretty sure is what ownership and Sandy should be striving for. Arguably, I guess. The projection systems aren't too being too good to either. Whatever the reason the Mets took a pass, taking on Kipnis' contract in this environment is looking more and more extravagant. If you want to trade Cabrera, assuming a deal is out there waiting to be had, it might be a better play to bring back Neil Walker or somebody out of this buyer's buyer's free agent market. But then, why would anybody trade for Cabera, or Kipnis, when Walker is out there waiting to be had for a song? There's more going on than I can get a handle on.
  7. Hi, I'm your new Mets pitching coach. That Warthen slider guy is gone and I have it on good authority that Manging Mickey isn't micro managing. I know what you're thinking. The Mets are back to hiring peripheral Yankee coaches and give them the bigger job in Flushing that they didn't quite qualify for (or hold down) in the Bronx. Kevin Long. Rick Down. Willie Randolph, for Pete's sake. But allow me to rebut. It's spring. I'm seeing a lot of guys down here. Hundreds, if you count players, coaches, and other support personnel. And not a lot of them have a ring. One of those MLB championship rings. I do — heck, I've got two of 'em — and that ain't nothing. So hopefully that gets me a little big of slack. How much? I don't know. Maybe you do. What's my 2018 going to look like? 8. Matt Ehalt has a source. And his source says the Mets had Paul Sewald for Jason Kipnis on the table, and then ownership nixed it. [tweet:mo0yc3jr] [/tweet:mo0yc3jr] It's certainly not definitive, but it does add intrigue. In the end, Frazier came cheaper.
  9. And Juanny juiffs also.
  10. And ... he whiffs. Show 'em how, Juanny.
  11. Mets coming back by loading 'em with one out the next inning. Rosario with the bags juiced.
  12. Harvey in the goo in the second after single/single/HbP through the heart of the order. Another single and one run home.
  13. I feel like I was asking this about this time last year, but isn't it about time we saw some Reyes-in-the-outfield action? Or, barring that, some Flores-in-the-outfield activity would be nice to see.
  14. Neil Walker oughta be damn glad he got $17.2 million from the Mets last year, because it sure looks like he's getting bupkis this season.
  15. I like Ichiro. He's like Worf to me, in that his society is built around honor, but almost everyone is a real phony about it, and use honor as a symbolic commodity in their power trip. But he's the the guy who embarrasses everybody around him who might be faking it, because he takes it so dead serious.
  16. Go to Hell, Mike Piazza is the handle Mrs. Edgy uses on her very occasional visits. It broke her heart that the film died in production. She hasn’t trusted Hollywood since.
  17. Go for it.
  18. Fangraphs took a deep dive in trying to figure out what happened to the Moussaka market. The fact that they never mention the Mets among the third-baseman shoppers (they're still a big league club, right?) and they never really invoke the possibility that something collusive is afoot kind of hurts the article. But in the second half, they get into the his 2016 injury and his subsequent loss of a step — which they see as meaningfully more than a step. Now that all the teams are armed with the same data, his dropoff in defense and baserunning skills could have certainly damaged his marketability, especially among teams that don't have a DH for him to slide to. At the same time, they acknowledge that (a) a year of defensive stats are hard to project from, and ( he could get some of that back a further year removed from his surgery. It's one thing to take $6.5 mill after turning down $17.5 mill. It's even more to take if from the same team you turned down. That's got to be a redfaced return for him.
  19. I just like typing the name "Claude." Sam Bankhead was a Negro League star as an infielder and outfielder, while brother Dan was an MLB pitcher in the early integration era. There were a few other brothers in there also. Mel Rojas pitched while his cousin Moisés played outfield like his father and uncles. Amazingly, there were also four more Boyers who played in the minors. Two brothers who are nephews of Vladdy Guerrero—pitcher José Guerrero and shortstop Gregory Guerrero—are both current Met prospects, but I think they might have released José.
  20. I think the Mets got the better guy, though. And if thinking doesn't work, I'm going to hope they did.
  21. You definitely want to sit that guy down the third time through the lineup.
  22. A Dominican signed as a 20-year-old. I think signing older, post-high-school Latin American free agents has been sort of a market inefficiency that the Mets have pursued since Omar's reign. Montero was one, and there are others, too. In fact, maybe this is an Omar signing. 23. Wes might have been a better hitter than Rick, and Rick was no slouch. I feel like it's often an accident of history which way a guy goes. For any number of amateur ballplayers across the country who are the two-way stars of their team, a scout with a lot of juice pronounces which track the guy is to go on, and that's the way he commits his life. It would be cool to find an organization or two that forsakes that kind of thinking and lets a guy spend his first two years in the minors doing both. More than likely, most times, either the player or the organization will find he's advancing more as one than the other, and he'll voluntarily put the weaker part of his game away. But for two or three golden geese every generation, they would excel at both and crack the majors as a two-way player. Some other brothers I just remembered who played on opposite sides of the ball: [list:2l9ayruv][*:2l9ayruv]Tug (p) and Hank © McGraw;[/*:m:2l9ayruv] [*:2l9ayruv]Cloyd (p), Clete (3b), and Ken (3b) Boyer;[/*:m:2l9ayruv] [*:2l9ayruv]Skip (p) Lockwood and his dead-ringer lookalike brother Claude (3b).[/*:m:2l9ayruv][/list:u:2l9ayruv]
  24. Unless something unexpected happens, the second baseman is going to be Cabrera. Guillorme hasn't even reached AAA yet.
  25. Also Tyler (outfielder) and Erik (pitcher) Goeddel, the suspiciously big-league sons of the inventor of HGH.
