  2. They better be bringing in a new big league outfielder around the same time. I'm not seeing any roster ready minor leaguers. I can grit my teeth and live with Ty Kelly as the fifth outfielder. Not as the fourth.
  3. Uppercut. That's the story. I got the most-written-about uppercut since Muhammad Ali. It's got a life of it's own. If I hit, it'll be attributed to the uppercut. If I don't, it'll be blamed on the uppercut. My defense, baserunning, if I gain weight, if I see Hamilton? Uppercut. I wish I shut up about the stupid uppercut. Or my agent did or whoever leaked it. I'm just trying to stay healthy and play some baseball here. Hopefully I can still establish the value of my defense and add to it with some offense. I'm a big league dude! How big? How dude? Put your answer below. 4. I'm a switch hitter. I play infield and outfield. I wear numbers in the fifties, and I'm funny. I'm kind of ideal to be the 25th guy on a roster. But I'm also ideal to try to sneak through waivers, and ideal to be claimed and end up going through the cycle elsewhere. Stupid rulez!! But I'm funny! And affable! And I have these sweet, sad, stray dog eyes! And though I'm generally pretty slight for a big-leaguer, I'm a little bulkier this spring. What'll that get me? You gots to tell me. WOCKA-WOCKA!! 5. Feels like the first lead in a week.
  6. Yeah, what's up with that, American League manager?
  7. So, Reyes or Flores in the outfield ... it's never going to happen, is it? Or at least, not until the team gets in a jam during the regular season and they need it to happen. See also: Our catchers in the infield. Run 'em out there, man!
  8. Sid Vicious is a British member of Parliament. Despite a checkered past, he has seen the threat of Hitler for what it was, contrary to his party's and his nation's leadership. Britain now threatened with imminent attack and her army surrounded, new leadership is sought, and Sid has been elected to lead a wartime coalition cabinet to come to the UK's defense. Seemingly set up to fail, our hero has to rally his own resolve before he can rally his country's.
  9. Here's a more traditionally aged amateur signee from last week. 10. Ed was what it was all about. I think about him all the time. He spent the bulk of a decade in the minors waiting for a break, summing up his four years at AAA without a callup, saying, “Baby, that was a hurtin’ thing.” That phrase comes back to me whenever I think about injustices that are just there, completely obvious, but not anything anybody's going to do anything about (which abound, these days). Understated but plain and undeniable: “Baby, that was a hurtin’ thing.” I also tend to think of him as most accomplished player in the history of the Kansas City A's, and was delighted to see native Kansan Bill James once make the same assessment. Glide on, Ed.
  11. I'm not necessarily what you've been looking for to come along and save your outfield situation, but I'm advancing while Champ Stuart and Wuilmer Becerra and Jayce Boyd grind their gears. Even Desmond Lindsay's in a holding pattern. But I've played well enough to move up every year, if only, you know, just, and when last season ended, I shipped out to the Arizona Fall League and set the golden desert on FIRE, hitting .351 — good for fifth in the league — and earned myself an invite to big league camp, if not a roster spot. And yeah, you may be thinking that an invite is just a piece of paper, a gracious bone thrown to an organizational spaniel like myself. But look at itthis way: The Mets are thin in the outfield. Oh, they got some good players, but their all-star leftfielder who plays out of position in center is out until May 1 and possibly later, and look, they're likely breaking camp with only four outfielders. They're the only four on the roster, and three of them spent a lot of time on the DL last year, and the fourth spent a lot of time on the Indians. I'm, like, seventh on the depth chart here, and you can't even spell my name. Learn to spell my name, and then tell me what I'm going to do with it in 2018. Well I do. He's been there when I put on clinics. [youtube:3bj8ux4u]73BVKOg9CC0[/youtube:3bj8ux4u] Yeah, so what? I'm bald. And have been since at least 24. But that's a side effect of all the bad-ass testosterone flowing through my veins. Testosterone. That's a little naturally occurring hormone that in Poland we spell K-A-C-Z-M-A-R-S-K-I.
  12. Lefty Specialist wrote: Gets a cuppa in September. Not sure he'll ever hit enough, but his defense is major-league ready. I'm telling you guys ... he's tubby! He's got to sweat off that gut before he he plants his flag in the bigs as a defensive specialist. Even if they don't explicitly undermine your game, bellies make your defense harder to sell.
  13. Yes, that will happen regularly. Until somebody gets the idea to bypass those two plays and start every extra inning with runners on first on third and one out.
  14. . [bigpurple:lreu54lz]Keep baseball boring![/bigpurple:lreu54lz] .
  15. Minor League doubleheaders have been seven-innings-per-game for decades.
  16. Wilmer Flores caught stealing. How desperate is our offense when we're turning to Wilmer Flores' wheels for a spark? Is Lewis Brinson the actual Miami centerfielder or is he a computer-generated player?
  17. Do I know anybody in this Marlin lineup?
  18. I think we have it backwards though. It's not OK to cheapen minor league baseball because no one cares about the results. No one cares about the results because we have so cheapened minor league baseball.
  19. Looks like the Mets' first game of the spring playing under National League rules.
  20. Yeah, I think treating 1962 as the top seed and 2018 as the bottom has merit. Without endorsing a favorite, I'd say that keeps like from matching up against like until the later rounds.
  21. The 20-second pitch clock was already established in the minors last season. They are reducing it to 15 when there are no runners on base. And they've certainly curtailed mound visit length and frequency, both at the major and minor-league levels. Aggressively and, to my thinking, counter-productively. The runner on second is a rule in the deeply risk-averse WBC play. To Ben, yes, the runner will be the guy who made the last out the previous inning, or whoever they put in to replace him. I deeply doubt this will be one-and-done. These things have a way of sticking around, if only because the leadership is averse to admitting mistakes. It often seems that the folks who run baseball don't like baseball.
  22. I doubt they'll be longer. I'm fairly certain that the math will show that they'll be shorter. But it's another byproduct of the tragedy of affiliation that has undermined baseball for the better part of a century.
  23. ... and yes I said yes I will Yes.
  24. The 1982 is my dark horse. It's deeply and joyfully blue and at the same time wonderfully disposable looking. It's like a cross between the cover of a Little League dinner program and the cover of a gay wedding program. It's like a high-end chewing gum wrapper. Bonus points for the skyline logo being hand-illustrated.
  25. Send him a collection of some real music, for Pete's sake.
