Markakis is a LIAR!

Nido runs like a catcher. A veteran catcher.

You've got to put your runners in motion there.

It's been a great week at the cold corner for Mets prospects. Not only did Peter Alonso take home, as expected, the Eastern League Player of the Week (putting up the highly improbably line of (.538 / .657 / 1.077 // 1.734), but Jeremy Vasquez, his South Atlantic League counterpart, took home the same award for the Columbia Fireflies (with the merely awesome line of .360 / .407 / .680 // 1.087). Columbia ain't the bigs, but whoever is scouting firstbasemen for the Mets must be doing something right.

I'll take that bet, you Shleprocks.

Ooh, Atlanta's number three! Their number three! Your callup's just a question of TIME, Soroka! Ooh, he's here in NYC! He's here, I see! Take the time to hit the Gugen-HEIM, Soroka! Nimmo's leading off! Gonna walk! Pitch below the knees! Turn your head and cough! Please piss here! Test for PEDs! Mike, Mike, Mike, Mi-Mi, whoa! M-m-m-Mike Soroka! M-m-m-Mike Soroka!

He sat DOWN, people! [youtube:1nu98eru]Ew7Zkkucos8[/youtube:1nu98eru]

Too bad. He just got a feature story at MiLB.com, too. Suddenly, we need L.J. Mazzilli back!

While the Mets have their two top starters going at home in this mid-week series, Atlanta is a little short in the arms department, with Julio Teheran, Anibal Sanchez, and José Ramirez all on short-term DL stints. While this is seemingly well-timed, Teheran will be activated and start Game Two of this series. The others could follow. Centerfielder and supa-prospect Ronald Acuña, Jr. has landed with a big splash, hitting .421 / .500 / .789 // 1.289 through his first 22 plate appearances. He's got four doubles, a homer, a stolen base, and after games, he gets to hang out in Cobb County. A.J. Ramos is reportedly already looking forward to walking him. Unfortunately, he's not the only young dynamo with a name starting in A threatening folks from the top of the Braves' lineup. Second-year secondbaseman Ozzie Albies is ripping the ball to the tune of .293 / .341 / .647 // .988 over the season's first 27 games. His nine homers thus far eclipse anything he's done in the minors, so they may not be representative of his ability, but hey, they happened. Curaçao, you keep sending your best to Atlanta. What did we ever do to you?

Spikes and Diapers, coming this fall on TLC.

In anticipation of Chad Ochoseis's visit on Wednesday, the Rumble Ponies jumped out tot 5-0 lead over Akron last night, with Andrew Churchcruising into the fifth inning with a three hit shutout, only to see the whole house of cards collapse as Akron put up a seven-run fifth, holding on there for 7-5 win. Peter Alonso's streak of homering in four straight games ended, as he was held to 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. If that's a disappointing game, it's certainly one most of us would sign up for. Alonso sits atop the league in batting average (.408), OBP (.505), slugging average (.776) and (naturally) OPS (1.282). You may now wipe that drool off your shirt. Despite a minor hot streak for a week in there, Tim Tebow has done little to curb his strikeouts. He still gets his walks and occasional double, so he's hanging in there, but more contact and in-game power is what you've got to be looking for at this stage. Jeff McNiel, a high-average/low-power infield with funny ears, has seen his prospect status fall with injuries in recent years, but already has a career high (4) in homers this season. Along with five doubles and two triples, he's enjoying a breakout slugging year (.623) and could see himself called up even before Alonso, as he plays all over the diamond and already touched Las Vegas last season. Unlike Vance Worley in Las Vegas, fellow veteran signee Scott Copeland enjoyed a successful debut, going 5 1/3 innings against Erie, giving up just two hits and one run. Yeah, there were four walks in there, but Scott's a big dude and his middle name is "Reast," and that's not a guy I want to get on the wrong side of. Coming on strong in the pen is Eric "I Wanna" Hanhold. Each of Eric's last three appearances have been of the two-inning, no-run variety, which kind of makes him the Robert Gsellman of the Eastern League. He's struck out nine, walked none, and saved two over that period, so keep an eye on his butt. Nabil Crismatt takes the mound against Akron today, putting his 1.21 ERA on the line. If he was magically ready to play today, he might be taking Céspedes' place on the roster. Work on getting him ready and worry about where he fits if and when it comes to that.

SUNY Brockport: eight draftees, but none reaching the bigs as a player. One, however, has made it as a manager. https://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/?key_school=b506506c

Another option is that he's just overdoing it in trying to behave like a leadoff hitter. That .390 on-base percentage will play, even as the rest of his line looks anemic and depressed.

Finding consistent performance at the back end of the rotation is a goal everybody seeks. Some days, you've got to ask your bats to win it.

The Yankees extended their winning streak despite getting a big dose of Angel Hernandez last night, with the loose cannon umpire objecting to a C.C. Sabathia grimace and following the Yankee pitcher to the dugout yelling at him. That's not the way rhubarbs are supposed to work, Angel. Pirate rookie Nick Kingham took a perfect game into the seventh inning in his MLB debut. That damned Paul DeJong broke it up, but the Bucs won handily.

I imagine he won't be activated unless he's there to actually be active. But a one-day appearance shouldn't cost the team too much, as I understand the arrangement.

If we get nothing else from 2018, the team sure seems to have licked the 2017 Bad Sunday Curse.

.317!!

Has reached base in 20 straight games, but hasn't put up an extra base hit in forever, and is now slugging .317. This is: a) a slump? a reflection of a small sample size? c) the reality of hitting the field without much of a spring training? d) the reality of who he is after the shoulder dislocation? e) something else? f) some combination of the above?

If Alonso and Smith end up together in Vegas, I imagine they'll use the DH to get them both plenty of reps. We'll see. But the team will probably try to make sure Peter gets at least half a season in Bingo. Injuries tend to decide such conflicts.

After Reyes, the top active Met is Wilmer Flores with 59. Beyond the prospect of Wright returning to something like form, the next most mortal threat to Strawberry is a reacquisition and thundering performance upgrade by Lucas Duda. IT COULD HAPPEN!
