Nimmo's first start against a lefty this year. He's 0-for-9 (but with three walks) against them so far. All four infielders for the Mets were once their regular starting shortstop. A broken hand and a PED pop on top of it. That's a dark week in a career.

Resisting such attacks would be a lovely place to start. It's pretty much all we've ever asked.

In addition to the return of Jay Bruce, we have several of the team's minor league free agents signing on to continue their professional careers in unaffiliated ball. Special kudos and best of luck to Keaton Aldridge, who has joined the United Shore Professional Baseball League, a recent startup (I think this is their third season) confederacy of four teams in the Detroit suburbs that (I think) share the same home park, playing for a peanuts and a roof over their heads. Seven of the Mets' first eight picks last year were college players, from winning programs (Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma State) too. The idea that you want players that have played good, rather than players you think will play good, kind of undercuts the argument to believe in the scouting of Omar Minaya and the like.

Centerfield, you've come at one guy this morning as being "stupid and lazy," and another as a "dumbass." I'm sorry the team has played poorly of late, but please lets try to be cool to one another.

I'm not sure what we're talking about. If we prefer the Yankees, we prefer the Yankees. If not, why lionize Hal Steinbrenner?

My guess is that the intent was to eradicate half of the sentient life forms. It wouldn't serve his alleged aim of providing a merciful bounty to the survivors if he eradicated half the turnips and cocoa beans also.

And don't get Fman started about "The two-slot." And Ant-Man and the Wasp, I guess, will drop back to somewhere between 14 and 19.

I'm telling you, Hulk, while being a (mostly) stinky movie, is canonical. The Incredible Hulk is generally classified as a reboot, but is more of a sequel, even if it's a sequel that allows you to ignore it's predecessor if you choose. Also, there are the several canonical TV shows. WHAT ORDER SHOULD I WATCH ALL THOSE EPISODES RELATIVE TO THE MOVIES, MAN?!

Opinions on the one-inning hook that deGrom got? Should he have gotten the chance to see if he could turn his afternoon around?

Peterson went seven innings tonight, giving up but a single first inning run on two hits. Ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss, however, but he might be moving up soon.

If the issue is that Wilpons are dispicable, you're not going to find a whole lot of true honorable types out there among sports owning billionaires. You may differ, but beyond the Wilpons, I think there's a lot more to root for, to associate with, and take joy in associating with, than the laundry.

Well, I certainly don't regret the team drafting Nimmo. If anything, I lament his marginalization. But if what constitutes a fuckup is based not on intent but on the eventual outcome, José Fernandez is no object lesson.

It may have been a fuckup. But the point is the strategic intent. You could argue that drafting José Fernandez was a fuckup.

If Philadelphia is some sort of model of what the Mets should be doing, Ty Kelly has gotten more playing time, while playing worse, with the Phils. If 2015 is the problem, then give me more problems.

That was weird. The strike over, with the teams given a few days to work out, all this momentum and speculation was building toward a couple of Yankee-Met scrimmages before the season re-opened. But Steinbrenner, always seeing a matchup with the lowly crosstown rivals as a lose-lose prospect, nixed this enterprise, leaving the Mets to scramble to secure the Blue Jays as a last-minute opponent, while the Yankees sufficed with a few scrimmages against their A-level team. Of course, that A-level team (which I guess might have included a young Greg Gagne) was in mid-season form and hustling their butts off against a Yankee squad just looking to get loose, and they played the big leaguers embarrassingly close both games.

A 5-4, extra-inning Mother's Day win saved the day following a ninth-inning blown save by Trey Cobb, and salvaged a 2-4 week following some tough losses to Hickory, leaving the 'Flies only three games off the pace in the South Atlantic League Southern Division. The bumpy road this past week belies some solid starting they've been getting, including recent turns by Yeizo Campos (4 shutout innings, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks); Joe Cavallaro (5.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 7 SO), Tony Dibrell (6.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 SO); and especially David Peterson (7 shutout innings, 3 H, 1 BB, 8 SO). Catcher Scott Manea has played little and succeeded even less since signing with the Mets as an undrafted free agent in 2016. But to call his performance this season a breakout would be an understatement. The Massachusetts native has been an absolute terror on Sally League pitchers this season, posting a .319 / .484 / .528 // 1.012. That Bondsian OBP would be leading the circuit by 55 points if he had a few more plate appearances. Even so, the official league lead belongs to teammate Blake Tiberi (.429), with fellow 'Fly Jeremy Vasquez coming in third (.416). Catch a Firefly!!!
