Up in the minors? Two balls surprisingly held by the park today as Caberera knocks in Neeeemo.

Well, that hurts. Not even a strike.

Céspedes is getting a lot out of some rusty trucks today.

No, they pushed him back because he got loose yesterday and they decided to treat it as an outing. Meanwhilst, Mets take the lead on a kapowie by Céspedes.

He threw 44 pitches in the first. They're being prudent. Even if I was committed to pulling deGrom, I'm not sure I'd burn a bench player there. deGrom can give you a good at-bat. On the other hand, maybe they don't want him swinging the bat anyhow.

Wow! Jacob deGrom on a pace to throw a 405-pitch shutout!

Jake may be struggling, but I'm glad he's on defense.

deG. be laboring.

Al the lefty batters reach to load the bases, but both our righty batters can't touch this guy. Let's hope Conforto remembers he's a lefty.

THANK YOU BRANDON NIMMO!!

Hey, we're getting under way! Gary Cohen reminding me that this is the same as last night's lineup except for switching Nimmo and Conforto.

Conforto in center and Nimmo in right? I'm not about that.

If a guy is hitting (now) .204 and reaching .287 and leading the league in strikeouts but is put in the position where he can bunt .750, but doesn't take it, baseball has just decided to be stupid.

Jesus wants you to bunt. In fact, he, Mohamed, Nostradamus, Isaac Newton, Confuscius and Marie Curie all got together to talk about it and agree that it's stupid not to bunt there.

Nothing is guaranteed, but we're going up against those dang Phils with Jacob deGrom. And Jacob deGrom is 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA. Moreover, for his career, he's 19-8 / 1.97 with 283 strikeouts in 260 innings during the day. That's the equivalent of a Cy Young-winning season, from Orel Hershiser or Greg Maddux or somebody. Over a career. Nothing is guaranteed, and yeah, this ballpark cheats, but I like that we got him going. I do!

Sure, hard to read anything conclusive, but ceetar seems to be writing above as if he was pitching against the Reds, not for them.

Falling into a 4-0 hole after one today, the St. Lucie Mets didn't lay down and die, but bucked themselves up in the middle innings, scoring two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and four more in the seventh on their way to 10-7 victory. Kevin Taylor led the way with three hits, including a double, plus a walk, but catcher Patrick Mazeika made his one hit count, blasting a three-run homer in the sixth off of Portland's Jake Cosart. Jeff McNeil's sixth-inning double ahead of Mazeika's bomb extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and 13 of the last 14. Then road win was Binghamton's second consecutive victory following a four-game skid. They remain in fourth place in the Eastern League Eastern Division, but have pulled within four and a half games of first. Have you been talking about Tyler Bashlor? Well get on that NOW, because pretty soon your friends will all be talking about him, and you'd like to be able to say your were first. Ty has five saves in five tries, a 1.46 ERA, a .146 batting average against, and 15 strikeouts in a 12 1/3 innings. That's actually a little of low for him, as he put up 86 strikeouts last year in just 49 2/3 innings. Get on board the Bashlor train early, because it's coming through. And to shut down Odubel Herrera's on-base streak. Consecutive games reaching base is the sort of streak OUR batters should be piling up.

Noah Syndergaard takes on Zach Eflin in a matchup that is 13 feet tall. Effy has given up but one run in 12 2/3 innings this season, but he's had bloated ERAs in partial seasons the two previous years. So either he's coming into himself, or this isn't him at all and he's due for a comeuppance. Buddy Baumann has served his suspension and is available out of the pen tonight. Dominic Smith may or may not get his first start of the season. Luis Guillorme may or may not get his first start of his career.

The New York Mets beat The Philadelphia Phillies last night, 3-1, on the strength of ninth-inning homers by Michael Conforto and Devin Mesaraco, cashing in on five relatively strong innings from starter Steven Matz and four innings of superb ball from the bullpen. Meanwhile, later that evening, The Las Vegas 51s bested the Fresno Grizzlies, 8-5, behind Cody Asche's second homerun since joining a more righteous cause, and four RBI. One and 2/3 scoreless innings from future-Met Tim Peterson saved the evening. What was happening up in Maine, you ask? Why, that's where the visiting Binghamton Mets took down the host Portland Sea Dogs, 6-1. Andrew Church returned from DL with his best start of the year, going six and 1/3 without allowing a single Sea Dog to score, striking out six, walking one, and yielding only four hits. Two walks and a double led to three RBI for Jeff McNeil, while Tim Tebow went 3-5, striking out but once. Let's go to Florida! Down in the Sunshine State, your St. Lucie Mets walloped the Lakeland Flying Tigers 11-2, behind a 16-hit attack, including three each from Desmond Lindsay, Luis Carpio, Anthony Dimino, and Ian Strom. Lindsay, showing some of his first-round merits this week, hammered two doubles and a triple. And our journey finishes in The South Atlantic League, where The Columbia Fireflies lit up the Hickory Crawdads, 8-3. Standford Swingers Quinn Brodey and Matt Winaker led the way with three hits, including a double and a homer between them. Catcher Scott Manea continued his breakout season with two more hits and a walk, and reliever Steven Villines put up a showcase of an outing, getting seven mid-game outs, six on strikeouts. I don't know if it's the first organizational sweep of the year, but it's the first I've found, and it made for a sweet Friday night.

The mid-century Reds put Mister Redleg on the cover every year (see his scowl turn to a smile after 1954), but ... good gosh, 1955! There are children watching! You should've tagged him, John.

Marlins beat the Braves tonight as J.T. Realmuto opened up with the bat attack. If Arizona can take out the Nats, all's right with the world.
