  1. I am honored to watch deGrom pitch every fifth day.
  2. Me gusta the six-pitch inning for deGrom. I could sure go for a couple of baserunners this inning, though.
  3. Come on. TELL ME that Rosario's walk-up music doesn't sound like "Heard It in a Love Song."
  4. Bruce, man, where's that arm?
  5. Bezes loaded por Judge. Gulp.
  6. If Bruce was running, the Mets likely have first and third. Instead, 6-4-3. Why are they so un-aggressive?
  7. More like Didi You'reboringus, amirite?
  8. Mets are hitting into the shift a lot. Like, whenever they don't strike out.
  9. Fan of the day: Maybe this is Baby Weetar?
  10. God, I love Tanner. Can't imagine being his father, though.
  11. It's not necessarily an either/or question, right? Gonzalez is classic pinch-hitter material.
  12. It might be a good way to cross the Yankees' scouting up too, plus calling him up for a marquee series = CAHN-fidence boost.

  14. Sure seems to be in decline to me. The 1993 Mets opened the season with six of their eight regulars (Hundley, Murray, HoJo, Tony Fernandez, Coleman, and Bonilla) being switch hitters. Plus their reserves included switchies such as Chico Walker, Jeff McKnight, Tito Navarro, and Wayne Housie. It was going to be THE YEAR WITHOUT BAILING OUT. It turned out to be THE YEAR WITHOUT A LOT OF THINGS. By the end of the season, it was THE YEAR WITHOUT TONY FERNANDEZ, as he was sent to the Blue Jays for the second of his record four tours of duty with Toronto. It was also THE YEAR WITHOUT SO MUCH AS 60 WINS. I don't mean to suggest a correlation between switch hitters and terrible play, but it was the 1993 Mets, and they were bad.

He was the starting shortstop for 2/3 of 2015 and 1/3 of 2014, given every chance to hang on to it. When Wright got hurt that season, Terry Collins for a while had Flores at short, Tejada at third, and Murphy at second, which seemed wrong all around, but he was loathe to move people from their earlier assigned positions. When he finally did, ultimately Wright came back, and Flores had no place in the lineup, and became a utility guy until Tejada got assassinated in the playoffs.

  17. Frank Catalanotto takes over as baseball coach at my father's alma mater (mea alma mater patris tui), The New York Institute of Technology. Go, Bears!
  18. Bring on the dancing bears. That's got to go in the lobby at CPF headquarters. Actually, fuck, that should be guest-read tonight at Two Boots.
  19. I don't think Callaway is dumb. But I think he's got a basketball coach's problem of being locked into his philosophy. When you live and die by the system you build, regardless of available personnel or situation, it can be sort of a small way of avoiding accountability. If it doesn't work, it's the organization who didn't get the right people for the system, or the players for their intractable refusal to adapt to the system. That's only going to by you time for so long, of course, and in the end, clinging to your philosophy come hell or high water makes you the intractable one.
  20. Maybe he got a two-book deal, and his saving the bulk of his Mets life for the sequel.
  21. Keith's positions on women in the game are ... complex.
  22. Note the Yankee shirt he's wearing in the road race photo. Damn it, Phil.
  23. Flying the homeboy flag is 15th rounder and Wagner College Seahawk catcher Phil Capra. Out of North Salem New York, with a classic New York face, Phil hopes his nascent career as a professional baseballer doesn't interfere with the filming of his starring role in The Buddy Hackett Story. 24. Thank you. Your final was 15-4. Batting third for the Cakes was one Eric Campbell, who went 4-4 with a double, a triple, and 4 RBIs before being lifted after six. Some days, it's like acid in the face.

The problem is motivation or something, and NOT shitty hitting/shifty bullpen/shifty depth because of shitty roster construction, or shifty player development? I'm not headhunting, but I tend to think Callaway's doing a pretty bad job deploying his guys and having them ready to play. Particularly the offense and defense.
