True to form, they've started the second half at 7-6, with two new teams ahead of them as they sit only 1 1/2 games out, having dropped the first game of a three-game set hosting Greenville, but excited to get back at it today with the starter as-yet unannounced. Lastly, Carlos Hernandez continues to be a flaming missile of love out of the bullpen, his stat line as extraordinary as his name is ordinary. He has now thrown 12 straight scoreless over his last seven appearances, lowering his ERA to 1.23 over 29 1/3 innings. He cares not a whit for South Atlantic League batters, and if the Lightning Bugs take the second half title, Hernandez will be the Fly that lights up the night like none other. Well, one option is to not bring in anybody until you have to, and get over artificial belief in the number 100 having special powers over a pitcher. Starting the season by limiting the starters to 80 pitches really put the bullpenners behind the eightball.

It's been near-on a month since you got an update on your favorite Florida State League team, the St. Lucie Mets, and while it was mostly a rough month, the team is currently on hot streak winning five of their last six, following last night's extry-inning triumph featuring the suddenly (possibly) revitalized Gabriel Llanes, who gave up a single run in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walking only one, before turning the game over to the bullpen, who threw 5 2/3 scoreless the rest of the way. The month was not without it's blood, as June saw the retirement of reliever Alex Palsha, who did well in the short-season leagues but couldn't stay healthy enough to get traction in the full-season leagues. With his retirement goes part of the dream of a Serbian golden age in baseball. June also saw the release of power-hitting catcher Brandon Brosher, who couldn't make enough contact to stay on the interstate. He leaves the Mets' system with a career .195 average. Ptui. Injuries further up the system have left the St. Lucies without a real offensive star, leaving the youngest Met, Andres Gimenez, unprotected in the lineup. Coming out as their best offensive player (.261 / .337 / .406 // .743) so far, AG added some power (3 homers) in June, but fell off generally (.202 / .287 / .360 // .647). Hopefully, help is on it's way, but there's little reason to think the young shortstop isn't continuing to progress. Yet. The team is something of a microcosm of the big league club, with the top starters performing consistently well, while the offense leaves them out to dry with no wins on their ledgers. Justin Dunn had a 2.36 ERA through nine starts but just(in) a 2-3 record before his promotion to Bingo (where he has continued to excel. But the real Hard-Luck Harol has been Harol Gonzalez, flashing a 2.82 ERA through 12 starts on one side of his card, and a 1-6 record on the other. Harry has walked but 19 and struck out 59 in his 73 1/3 innings, and he continues to put up solid year after solid year while staying below the radar. His June numbers were astounding: 29 innings with a 1.86 ERA, 25 strikeouts and only four walks. And an 0-3 record. How's that for kick in the nuts? Also earning a recent promotion is Joe Zanghi, an absolute terror out of the pen, with a 1.15 ERA through 31 1/3 high-leverage innings. Big lefthanded top prospect David Peterson possibly goes today. DP has managed to secure decisions in each of his first three starts since his promotion from Columbia, going 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA thus far. PROGRESS!
