My guess is that "able to play third" is an established part of Flores' label, and whatever value it has is diminished the more he actually plays third. Just a guess. Another possibility is that they don't want to touch him while he's hitting.

I'm not sure playing Reyes has sold ticket one. I do think if they release him, it could set off an lolmets don't honor their heroes properly narrative. That might cost them a ticket or two, but nothing that a little curtailing of the stinking wouldn't offset.

I guess you're saying that I'd be watching the 2018 games out of fear that the Mets would be relegated, and that may be true. But once they were dropped, I'm certain I'd be gone. Don't worry about it Benjy, It can't happen here. Owners that have paid billions for franchises won't allow a system that will suddenly destroy their investments, while simultaneously exploding the prices of AAA teams beyond the means of many of the markets in which they play now. I wouldn't ever say "can't" but yeah, I agree that their interest are sorely aligned against this. But I've discovered a new, radical seed growing in me, since sometime around the time that guy got booted kicking and screaming off the plane. It's a mantra that sticks with me, and it goes, "The corporation doesn't always have to win."

While not the juggernaut they were in 2017, the DSL Mets 1 (who need a better name), are still performing well, sitting in third place, four games out in the Dominican Summer League South Division. An adjustment here or a corner turned there and they could be back off to the races. (Working on the photos, here.) But one guy who needs no adjustments is catcher Andres Regnault. The Caracas native signed back in 2015 has turned a corner and is now second in the league in OPS, clocking in at .342 / .431 / .613 // 1.043, while throwing out 30% of baserunners. He's also second in the league with six homers. He's a little old to still be in the DSL, but catchers can be notoriously slow developers. It'll be exciting to see where he lands next. When Regnault catches, the guy he likes to catch most is Cesar Loiza. Mentioned above, Loiza started the season in the pen, before his overall jaw-dropping-ness got him promoted to a regular rotation slot. That doesn't always work, does it? Well, stop being such a freaking cynic. I've come to praise Cesar, not to bury him. And when a guy is 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA through his first 30 2/3 innings, the praise comes EASY. He's walked 12, struck out 38, NOT given up a SINGLE homer, and has pitched shutout ball in three of his four starts. Loiza is a 20-year-old DSL rookie. He's another case where it'll be interesting to see how hard the Mets push him. Loiza is a WINNA. When it's time for Loiza to relinquish the ball, you can be pretty confident if it's relinquished to Nixon Silva. Unimpressed with Loiza's 0.88 ERA, the Silva has put up a 0.87 figure. An 18-year-old from Bolivar, the Silvasmith has struck out 18 in 20 2/3 innings, with all but one of his 7 appearances coming out of the pen. Not impressed? Well consider that he has walked only one. NOT BAD for an 18-year-old, you unreasonable yutz. CONTROL! It's the Nixon Doctrine. Even as we speak, the DSL METS 1 (who need a better name) are leading in the fifth inning against the DSL Cardinals Blue (who need a better name). Who's on the mound? Cesar Loiza is on the mound. And if that's not money, I don't know what is. Go, free market, go! How would this work? I build a stadium, order uniforms, and declare myself an MLB team? Well, in my mind, you can do that already, but you would get frozen out of markets and broadcast opportunities by MLB, and certainly frozen out of opportunities to play other MLB teams. The answer, though it's not popular, is to allow champions of lesser leagues to be promoted and last-place teams in greater leagues to be relegated. Competition would be fierce. Interest would be piqued in every hamlet across the nation. Players who play for peanuts now even though their talents and circumstances have left them just out side of the major league pool would suddenly have fierce competition for their services. And teams who are on the verge of being relegated sure as hell won't shrug their shoulders and refuse to steal home when the opposition moves the thirdbaseman closer to second. Competition! Baseball!

Yes, it has become boring, and I agree that the market should answer, but I don't say "do nothing." Let loose the artificial market restraints. End the draft. End the caps on bonuses to foreign players. End the the anti-trust exemption. End the equal shares in the merchandising pool. End the absurd and anti-American practice of territorial exclusivity. End affiliation. End exclusive rights to call yourself a major league franchise. Go, free market, go!

That's maddening. Do that once, successfully bunt two or three times, and the shift is seriously curtailed. Take what they give you. The gentelmanliness of the game is seriously corroding it. There's way too much fraternity, and gentlemen's understandings. -
Las Vegas has been hotter than, well, Las Vegas. They're winning 5-1 tonight behind a three-run homer by Cody Asche. There's still a lot of innings to play, but after the season had seemed lost, they've won 12 of their last 16, pulling within five games of first. With El Paso losing, they could be within three before their heads hit the pilloow.

Fascinating Sports Illustrated article about the young Dave Kingman, that hints at the marvel and enigma that he would become, but also at the peripheral skills (foot speed, arm) that he had stopped exhibiting at a relatively early part of his career, as well as some (lateral movement, eagerness to learn), that few ever associated with him. KINGSIZE PHENOM FOR THE GIANTS Even as the hyperbole flows, Dave himself gives a more sober assessment of his game. "I have many, many weaknesses as a hitter," he acknowledges. "I have trouble with off-speed pitches, and I'm working on that. I have always been aggressive at the plate. Now I'm learning more about waiting for my pitch. Screwballs bother me. I'm still not sure who had the advantage the first time around—the pitchers or me. But we'll see."

Sitting in second place in the Gulf Coast League East Division, your GCL Mets going 5-5 over their last 10 hasn’t hurt them much, still sitting at 2 1/2 games out in this, the young season’s first month. You’ve already read about Jarred Kelenic plenty in the Kingsport Mets thread, so I won’t belabor the point. Suffice to say his pants first caught fire with the Gulfers. But he wasn’t alone. Do you like power-hitting catchers? Sure, everybody does! Well how about Luis Lebron, who has already hit three homers in the season’s first 10 games. Luis is pounding it to the tune of .310 / .375 / .621 // .996, and even has a pair of stolen bases. No fooling! But pitchers are what gets you hot, right? Well, I give you Willy Taveras. Willy hasn’t been playing around. Through four starts, Willy has thrown 22 innings, yielding only a 1.23 ERA, walking 8, but striking out 25. Little Willy won’t be going home any time soon as along as he puts up numbers like that. But he has earned a promotion to Kingsport. But who’s gonna finish?! You’ve got to ask! Because here in the GCL, it’s rare a pitcher gets to go much more than five innings. Well, I give you Ronnie Taylor, Jr. Not the son of 1969’s Dr. Ron Taylor, this RT hails from Allen, Texas and was the Mets' 40th and last draft pick from 2017. Now he’s pitching like a first-rounder, giving up only one earned run in his first 12 innings, striking out 10. Yeah, he’s walked 7, but you can get away with that when you’re holding opponents to a .116 batting average. Even as first-rounder Kelenic has torn the cover off the ball, second-rounder Simeon Woods-Richardson has been hanging around for over two weeks and has yet to appear. Bored with the Mets' present? Well, go down to St. Lucie, check out the Mets' future, watch the kids kick ass, hang out with manager David Davalillo and report back to us on your adventures. Maybe you can get some pictures to replace all these silhouettes.
