  1. Game turned to shit, though.

  3. I'm really surprised to read that Mark Shapiro is only 51. I don't think he's coming, but we'll see.
  4. Gwreck wrote: I have an idea. It’s rooted in common sense. And that idea is that the statement is not true. I've got plenty of sense. And I can't think of any reason why he'd lie about that. Or why anyone should be angry about the statement.
  5. I guess most management hires come with underlings who you didn't choose but were assured you'd accept their presence. Omar has the right idea in not throwing his hat into the ring. If he got the job, he'd be a lightning rod of controversy from day 1. Plus, lieutenants last longer than generals. Bud Harrelson said (only somewhat jokingly) that taking the job of manager was the dumbest move he ever made — that he could've stayed as a coach and become one of those institutional guys that never moves on through several regime changes.
  6. Mets get the call! Let's get Handsy the win!!
  7. Hand-Jive, in addition to breaking a record just by appearing, did alright.
  8. Very boney-headed defense in this crapticle inning.
  9. Bruce, you were an outfielder, right?
  10. The lead hangs on the razor's edge. Vargas is, like, early-season Vargas.
  11. Fman99 wrote: Three players who hit 50 homers as a Met and as a Dodger: PiazzaHundleyUm ... Eddie Murray? Straw was my guess, along with Piazza as the gimme. I don't think Straw got it done as a Dodger, nor Eddie Murray as a Met. Jeff Kent?
  12. Holy shit! Todd Frazier's catch was bullshit?!!
  13. Back to the mill for Hill!
  14. Three players who hit 50 homers as a Met and as a Dodger: [list:z9xatel2][*:z9xatel2]Piazza[/*:m:z9xatel2] [*:z9xatel2]Hundley[/*:m:z9xatel2] [*:z9xatel2]Um ... Eddie Murray?[/*:m:z9xatel2][/list:u:z9xatel2]
  15. Ron just mentioned that the Sox are 34-8 in their last 42 inter-league match-ups. The Mets still have them coming up, which is going to throw a real wrench into my grand plan of them winning out every game left in the season.
  16. Ka-POWIE! Welcome back, Brucie.
  17. This is a key matchup. It's the first game of the Brady Feigl era, as far as I'm concerned.
  18. This happened with the interviews that produced the Sandy Alderson hire. It's really awkward interviewing other GMs' lieutenants while their teams are in the post-season trying to win a championship.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: Looks like 'only' about 15 or so runs driven in by Ruth in 1918 came while playing as a pitcher. So sticking with the only-while-pitching standard, maybe Ruth doesn't even have the best ratio among ERA-title qualifying pitchers. Possibly Drysdale.
  20. Amazingly, there was one guy who pitched enough to qualify for the ERA title while managing to drive in more runs than he allowed — some old guy named George Herman Ruth. He pitched 166 1/3 innings in 1918, while allowing 51 runs — 41 of them earned. Both numbers are below the 61 he drove in, while appearing in 75 more games in total than he pitched in. Ohtani has certainly shown the capacity to join the club.
  21. Running out of games, but Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington are all eminently catchable.
  22. Well, he came into the game hitting .305. And he joined the team at a point where they were loaded with lefthanded outfielders and needed somebody righthanded. He goes back on the ball in center better than Conforto and Nimmo. Those guys come in on the ball nicely and cover the gaps (Nimmo moreso) well, but over-the-head has been no-man's-land for the two of them.
  23. That's some good foul ball shaming.
  24. Yeah, it looks like I mis-phrased that. More like ... surviving stadium that hosted the earliest Mets World Series game, or some other more spectacular phrasing.
