Isn't he in jail as part of the Mueller probe?

Nonetheless, the administration is all over it.

Well, sounds as if Ted Williams won't be the last guy who hit .400 for much longer.

Agreed. Gsellman's locks and beard generally give me a kind of awkward feel with him, like he's a counterfeit deGrom. But when he gets that intense rah-rah game face going, his look suddenly feels authentic, and the photog totally captured that.

I have this notion of the abuser in baseball. I don't know if it's accurate, but I tend to think the pampered closer profiles as most likely to lose his shit domestically. But after that, it's the big shot shortstop who can do marvelous things athletically, but can't sand the rough edges off his game, and is coming off a crappy season that has kind of undermined the notion that his game can catch up/keep up with his athletic skills. It's a notion that his self-image is built on. And self-images are fragile.

Ashie62 wrote: Matt Harvey gets last laugh Oh, no. I've got a LOT of laughs left. He may have a lot of $$, but he can't take that away from me.

I like how she calls him "troubled," echoing one of Lunchy's great explications of sportswriting: "intense" = asshole white guy "fiery" = asshole Latino guy "troubled" = asshole black guy

He probably thinks it is. I mean, they're dealing with a hostile country under sanctions — sanctions that were largely lifted, yes, but then re-established by the boner in chief, so he'll probably try and stick his nose in it. He already took on the NFL, to the benefit of nobody. Of course, God knows how many weeks he has left.

At this point, Zach Lee heads into Christmas break as one of several Zachs and Zacks in the organization. He looks to be the number two starter for Syracuse which I guess makes him #7, #8, or #9 overall, depending on whether you still consider Gsellman and Lugo part of the rotation depth. And these ledes will be stopped at editing: Mariano Rivera has made a lot of history, none so momentous as his blown save against the Red Sox in 2004 starting the transformation of a robotic Yankee sweep into baseball's greatest comeback and the Red Sox ending of the longest championship drought in baseball history. Now he will forever be recorded as part of that history. Panamanians were electrified by the news of Mariano Rivera's election to the Hall of Fame.

I wonder if Wright was brought to the winter meetings as a closer. "Hey, Wilson, you wanna go for a sandwich? I've only recently gotten to know Brodie but he seems real neat. If you have any questions about cool places to live in New York, please ask. Things are really exploding right now in Briarcliff Manor. WHOO! 24-7! Hey are you gonna finish those onion rings?"

How do you like that patience paying off for Mussina? He's gone 20.3% (2014), 24.6% (2015), 43.0% (2016), 51.8% (2017), and 63.5% (2018). He's also unjustly on the outside looking in when it comes to the Orioles' garden of retired numbers. I think there is residual bitterness in Baltimore from him jumping to the Yankees, but he was a heckuva pitcher. He may be the last guy ever to win 20 games in his final season.

Right? "Don't look for a wife in the centerfold" has been a rule that has always worked for me.

Looks like our 2018 Mets in Retirement page got ... well, retired in the last archive. But the Athletic (for you subscribers) has a story about Mike Piazza, his takeover of a century-old mid-level football club, and it's ultimate destruction. Owning ain't for everybody. https://theathletic.com/721275/2018/12/18/the-passion-of-mike-piazza-how-the-midlife-crisis-of-a-baseball-hall-of-famer-led-to-the-demise-of-a-100-year-old-italian-soccer-club/?fbclid=IwAR25mzjhvbbocGIOIsjbDfBGNBP8k1bM1h7JjUA4Cux1EctRhy-QwbQEulI

I don't know I would guess we had a surplus of retired generals and colonels by 1954, and didn't always know what to do with them. They're not all as brilliant as John Kelly.

I like the parallels between the photos.

Unlike Jackson, though, he comes on a minor league deal. He's certainly older than Jackson. He's older than most. Nonetheless, even though he's a 38-year-old centerfielder, he's probably got something like a 50% chance at cracking the opening day roster. At this point, anyhow.

Yeah, I'm hearing a very slight "s" in there.

Grote and Carter too.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I liked Holiday Inn better, even though the story in White Christmas made more sense. That's not a bad summation, even though White Christmas doesn't have a blackface sequence. ("Who was it set dem darkies free?!") On the other hand, it does have the hilariously awful "Snow!" song. The "old man" general whose late-life dignity Bing Crosby was trying to secure was, of course, the same age as Crosby.

An added upside to the Ramos signing is that it knocked Nido off the projected opening day roster, as Nido had the second weakest claim to the title of "Major Leaguer" of any of the 25. Now, the undisputed holder of the Weakest Link has to be Kevin Kaczmarski.

Even better, it's two plus an option. Shaves off a lot of uncertainty.

I have to think that Ramos backed up by Plawecki is a pretty big bump up from Plawecki backed up by Nido. We had d'Arnaud as less than likely to start the season with the big club, but it'll be interesting how they go about paring their three catchers down to two.
