  1. Well, they have a pair of long reliever/spot starter types in Lugo and Gsellman. Also, it's a pretty crowded pen as it is. Not only will there no room for Luis Avalán, Tyler Bashlor, Eric Hanhold, Tim Peterson, Jacob Rhame, Hector Santiago, Paul Sewald, and Drew Smith (who collectively threw 326 innings at the big league level in 2018), Rule 5 pick Kyle Dowdy will be lost if he doesn't make the team.

  3. Have you spent any quality time at http://www.baseballcardvandals.com/Baseball Card Vandals? https://66.media.tumblr.com/4dbf49d8ea3bf42a4a129454c9754e67/tumblr_pl8y60Guvr1rmoryfo1_540.jpg>
  4. I'm all for borders over bleeds. Basic information (player, team, position) is appropriate on the front, and reading it against the background of the photo is always a headache. Asking the card publishers to consistently provide contrast betwen the text and the photo for hundreds of cards with 100 different levels of light and brightness, at that size, is asking too much. So yeah, givum me a border (which also makes for a great design signature for the set), or give me a stylized text box.
  5. Detroit outfielder and thirdbaseman Nicholas Castellanos is reportedly asking for a trade, rather than cooling his heels with a rebuilding team. Nico is coming off his best ObP season, and probably his best season season. He's not a strong defender, but maybe Nimmo can fulfill his destiny of sliding over from a corner into center.
  6. I imagine they've shown more interest than the A's and the Rays. And I feel certain in saying that virtually every team in baseball isn't acting as if those two players are carrying infections diseases. Signing such players can be a high-risk proposition, so teams want to drive as hard a bargain as possible, and they also know that the stupid luxury tax means they'll be paying double for a big chunk of those huge contracts. But nonetheless, teams have pursued these guys, and some of them have pursued aggressively.
  7. A Boy Named Seo wrote: The internet is abuzz that Pollock is gone to the Dodgers. That likely removes a Bryce Harper suitor and maybe puts some other stuff (Joc Pederson) in play. For us, that means get used to the Lagares/Broxton BATTLE FOR THE AGES! J.D. Davis just called to say he's sick of you bitches leaving him out of the picture. That was his word, not mine. I'm just passing it on.
  8. Brandon Nimmo useta have a goatee. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSD1CW65-CW9sCV8_HiG6X-kZW5WZMahbiJIHtj20XCPCI8fzPyMQ> He also useta be a rah-rah spirited leader type. Maybe he will be again once he gets past the "I'm just happy to be here getting a chance to contribute" stage. https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/trib.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/2/e8/2e810255-77e5-5d4f-a4c2-2e566e9497a4/5b2bf106a3a99.image.jpg?resize=400%2C297> Share your Mets usetas HERE!
  9. Until my deathbed, I'll remember Mike Francesa referring to Ike Davis' valley fever as "jungle fever." Why did we wake up one morning and decide that we wanted to fill all our positions of authority with sub-literates?
  10. Me too. Crossed it off this week.
  11. Andy Pettitte has already pledged to release his delegates so his 9.9% vote could be added to Derek Jeter's total and he can get more than 100%.
  12. Yeah, but that's not the view I'm taking. At least, not for the sake of the argument.
  13. I can make an argument for Bonds and not Clemens. If you accept the generally accepted timeline, that Clemens began juicing after leaving the Sox following a couple of pedestrian seasons, and Bonds began juicing in 1999 following jealousy ver the McGwire/Sosa charade, then Bonds is already a Hall of Famer before cheating, while Clemens is not quite. I can't make an argument for Clemens and not Bonds — at least, not one I can pretend to get behind.
  14. =Centerfield post_id=1635 time=1548256573 user_id=65]And I think the only reason that a unanimous vote resulted is not because of the greatness of Rivera, but because vote shaming has become a thing.

Even after https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1086&position=3B/DH#valuedocking him for not playing defense year after year, Fangraphs still credited him with 65.5 fWAR. His career DWAR was -9.0. And that is for the (roughly) 27% of his potential innings played. That projects to -33.33 for a career, or a net WAR (65.5 - 33.33) of 32.17 if he had played in the field for his entire career. Later That 65.5 number is with defense factored in, which I thought was pretty clear. You're double-taxing him.

Even after https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1086&position=3B/DH#valuedocking him for not playing defense year after year, Fangraphs still credited him with 65.5 fWAR. That's comparable to a lot of non Hall-of-Famers, but it's also comparable to Tony Gwynn, Craig Biggio, Harmon Killebrew, and Tim Raines. It's also comparable to a lot of non-Hall-of-Famers. But it's easy enough intellectually to discredit him for not playing more defense without having to judge him as part of an arbitrary class of players who will never be allowed. What if a guy DH's for half his career and hits 1,000 homers? If you don't want to vote for the guy, don't. There's plenty of reason not to. But refusing consideration because he DH'd is way too easy for me. He didn't make the rule.
  17. This is a decade old and I'm probably the last one to see this. A giant starship comes to earth and mysteriously stops over Johannesburg, South Africa. After waiting for something to happen, officials cut into the ship to find a malnourished population of aliens warming themselves around the alien equivalent of oil drum fires. The aliens are moved to a relocation camp in a neglected district of town, and ten years later they are living in poverty and degradation in a situation that's clearly meant to parallel South Africa's black townships under Apartheid. In documentary style, they tell the tale of a shadowy multinational corporation subjugating and exploiting the aliens and the weakling middle-level manager who gets caught in between. A joint US/South African/Kiwi production. https://img.moviepostershop.com/district-9-movie-poster-2009-1010540181.jpg>
  18. Of course. I would imagine there's a good chance he was the first Wilmer in Congress, too.
  19. Edgar Martinez was not a HORSE player. He played 4605 innings at third and another 224 at first. Nonetheless, I imagine the greatest HORSE player is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
  20. Amazing how, in a few short years, we've gone from a Hall electorate that resisted all but a very few relievers (and even the ones they elected, such as Wilhelm and Eckersley, spent good portions of their careers starting) to a reliever being the first unanimous electee.
  21. What we're only scratching at are the persistent artificial market constraints that do the most salary dragging: teams' exclusive rights to their players until six years into their big league careers (to say nothing of their minor league careers, where most receive slave wages), the luxury tax, what remains of the compensation rules, territorial exclusivity, the draft ... It's all generally embraced as part of baseball, and it's all boochit. Evan Longoria wants me to be mad about statistical data?
  22. Steve is going far afield. Even by Steve J.'s standards.
  23. Red hot Wilmer Flores Trivia: Who was the first "Wilmer" to play for the Mets?
  24. That's not bad. But I read this morning that Mickey says he intends to lock McNeil in between Nimmo and Cano. Which is weird, to think that he has no position, but allegedly has a spot in the batting order locked down.
  25. Buster Posey could certainly work. Adam Jones could captain the sinking ship in Baltimore. Alex Gordon, how about you? You've been with the Royals over a decade and play both infield and outfield. José Altuve isn't yet 29, but I'd make him Houston's captain on general principle, because he's a total badass.
