Good one on Tony Clark. I see Brett Butler involved too. Whether he'd be a nickle back on defense or a third-down specialist out of the backfield, I'm not sure. One of those two. Kingman is my other defensive end. And Jeff D'Amico is a guard.

In an https://nypost.com/2019/02/04/mets-jacob-degrom-contract-talks-are-about-to-get-serious/otherwise nothing-new-to-see-here article about signing Jacob deGrom to an extension, Joel Sherman writes that Brodie Van Wangenen no longer has to recuse himself from negotiations involving his former client. Now that deGrom has been signed for 2017, BVW's recusal period with regard to him is effectively over, and he's free to speak for the team with regards to all future deals. That's coming from the union. Weird.

NFL wide receiver Bradley Marquez played for the Kingston Mets back in 2012 and 2013. The Mets have still retained his rights across the intervening seasons, and hey, he is a free agent.

Rod Kanehl was a top decathlete at a small college. He was an Olympic candidate but he had started his family young, so he had to turn pro as a baseballer to make some $$. He ran the 100 in 10.5, so he'd probably be a good addition to the wideout squad. He could highjump 6'2" so he also might be a good guy to carry the ball in goal-line situations.

Vince Coleman was also a punter and kicker with Florida A&M. Backman never really stopped being a halfback. When he was in a rundown, he'd drop to one arm to pivot on when he had to turn around.

Halfback has to be Dozier, yes. The quarterback shortlist has to include Tim Tebow. And save room in your defensive backfield for John Stearns. Mookie returns the kickoffs. Coleman returns the punts. Strawberry strikes me as more of a pass-swatting defensive end.

I like that. "Mets-related" makes it read like the organization is implicated in these deaths.

I'm not sure, but I think Friend was the pitchingest Pirate of all time. His son followed him into pro sports, joining the PGA tour in the nineties.

A tall lanky lad — alternately listed at 6'4" and 6'5" — Keelan pitched four years of Ivy ball for the Princeton Tigers, but appears to have gotten hurt in his senior year, as his season was abbreviated and his control cratered. Whatever draft prospects he may have had gone, he finished his degree and is returning to the mound a year and a half later. Former Cubs (and Reds and A's) shuttle rider, switch-hitter, and utility dude Arismendy Alcantara has signed a minor league dealiio that sort of went under the radar. 'Mendy has played pretty much everywhere, with only pitcher, catcher, and first base left to cross off. He has a nice power (both sides)/speed profile, but he hasn't been able to gain traction as a big league hitter, and spent most of 2018 with Oaxaca and Tijuana in the Mexican League, where he showed at least a hint of his old form.

Two of the big league vets who toiled in the minors for the 2018 Mets are signed off, four new Caribbean teenagers (three from Venezuela) join the organization, and our 2012 first rounder clears wavers and returns to the organization. Ceets is strangely registered, but watching us incognito. Thanks for that tale. Hopefully, now that there's a director of alumni relations, this sort of fuckup won't happen again. Because it's Jay Horwitz, it most likely will, but hopefully that won't be the end of the story.

Well, that was a little ... well, all's swell that ends swell.

If they get bumped from the bullpen into the rotation, they will be part of the rotation, presumably getting an average of 9-10 innings a week, with the 4-5 innings of bullpen work per week they leave behind being divided up among guys already in the pen, with maybe no more than one going to a callup. If he stays in the pen, and the starter job goes to P.J. Conlon or some Syracuse exile, that's 6-8 innings per week to a caullup, and 1-3 more innings to the pen's back end. The best route to a successful bullpen is the best rotation.

A Boy Named Seo wrote: I would love it if some 6th starter was pissed off at receiving only mop-up innings because the 1-5 stalwarts were healthy and missed no starts. But there will no doubt be injuries and if the 10-day DL doesn't go away, there will be opportunities to manipulate "rest" and get dudes some starts. And yanking Lugo or Gselly means we take a hit on the bully depth. I don't love that notion either. Well, the other half of that perspective is that putting them in the bullpen at all gives a hit to rotation depth, which I value more.

In a world ruled by me, the idea that Gsellie and Lugo have become bullpen fixtures doesn't preclude their return to the rotation if need be. Starting depth! It's right under your nose!

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I'm still gobsmacked at the preposterous notion accompanying this story that it was Alderson who preferred the Mets go without sufficient staff in the analytics department and will point out that every new Mets GM since Duquette came with a promise to beef up staffing there. Let's see if in 2 or 3 years these guys remain or aren't downsized so that the club can afford to re-sign an outfielder, as apparently was the case under Sandy Yeah, this bugged me too. And Alderson had been off the job for half a season, so it's not particularly fair to characterize him as holding the bag at the end.

Yup. What's the downside? The league sharing revenue has guaranteed return on their investment, and the cities building superballparks for them has taken away much of the demand for capital investment. So teams like the Royals and the Padres and the Marlins and the White Sox, and even the Phillies and Astros, can take turns trying to win. While even the Red Sox and Yankees and Dodgers work to stay under the luxury tax threshold, which not only works as an artificial (but real) cap for them, it tells the rest of the league they don't have to spend more to stay on the field with those clubs. Derek Jeter can run his club like a punk and still make money like he's printing it. It's all bullshit. Promotion and relegation NOW!!!!

I certainly don't want to discourage your ideas, but the draft is terrible. Whether I always do such a thing, I don't know. I apologize if I've been a bad rabbit.

Among the things Brodie Van Wagenen has been turning over since his appointment has been the analytics department, which reportedly employed only three full-time staffers by the end of 2018. Apart from taking a big step forward by naming Adam Guttridge assistant GM overseeing analytics — essentially elevating statistical analysis to a cabinet-level position — they today announced two new hires: longtime Baseball Prospectus analyst and writer Russell Carleton, and Andrew Perpetua, who had previously been hired by Guttridge at the analytics firm he founded, NEIFI (Normalized Empirical Individual Forecasting Index). Carleton is the author of https://www.triumphbooks.com/the-shift-products-9781629375441.phpThe Shift: The Next Evolution in Baseball Thinking. He's alo got a PhD in clinical psychology from DePaul, which probably makes him smarter than me, and maybe smarter than all of us except The Old Original JB. Wondering whether guys should be bunting more against the shift He's thought about this https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/45919/best-of-bp-2018-bunt-joey-bunt/a lot. Like, https://www.baseballpro?spectus.com/news/article/46581/baseball-therapy-should-i-bunt-it-now/a lot. He says goodbye to BP and hello to the Mets https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/46832/baseball-therapy-title-goes-here/here. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61-70xPUVTL.jpg> Perpetua, for his part, developed https://www.xstats.org/XStats, a system for using Statcast data for something more than jawdropping and speculation, but to evaluate and project performers. That kind of sounds like a useful guy to have around. He has written for Rotographs and The Hardball Times, and is one of the world's leading authorities on https://www.rotoql.com/qlwire/backup-backstops/Travis d'Arnaud. Definitely a useful guy. Carleton and Perpetua join Alderson-era holdovers T.J. Barra and Joe Lefkowitz. Christopher Pang jumped ship to the Yankees this offseason. It's hard to wish him well. Welcome to the Mets, smart dudes.

Let the Yankees try to stockpile all the talent. It's their money. Artificial constraints undermine the competitive nature of the game. The draft, the slot values, the international bonus pool limits, the luxury tax, the subsidiarization of the minor leagues, the years and years of control teams still get over minor- and major-league players, the territorial exclusivity. It's all exploitative and anti-competitive bullshit. Set competitiveness free. If the Yankees can prosper in that environment, more power to them. I think they'd fall like fools. #Amurricah

Here's a way: Eradicate the draft.

And Bruce, Swarzak, and Bautista, I guess should be included too.

Well, I didn't like that trade either, but you're leaving Canó out of the equation.
