So bored of that take I'm not sure what's more surprising — that I got through that article, or I still clicked the vid after reading it. But I made it through somehow long enough to see G-FaFiF. The Terry Collins lookalike was coolio, also.
  2. DiMaggio was the model for Derek Jeter in massaging the narrative of his legacy. And I put the "Joe DiMaggio made the hard plays look easy" line in the same bag as "Derek Jeter makes every one around him better." The first statement was a way of throwing an unquantifiable factor into the mix to try to plausibly make the argument that DiMaggio was as good as or better than Ted Williams, when he clearly wasn't by any fair measurement. The second statement was a way of throwing an unquantifiable factor into the mix to try to plausibly make the argument that Jeter was as good as or better than Alex Rodriguez, when he clearly wasn't by any fair measurement. I not only put them in the same bag, but it's a bag I don't really like to open.
  3. Jeter was just the quintessence of making the easy plays look easy. And the novice plays look heroic.
  4. In the middle of a https://deadspin.com/why-are-mets-fans-mets-fans-1832542986wound-licking video at DEADSPIN, up pops the always-handsome G-FaFiF!!
  5. Yeah, Dickey made it look like it was torture.
  6. It's funny how third base is mostly in focus, and you can't really spot how deep on the horizon it's supposed to be. I mean, we know how a field is laid out and where third base is relative to the pitcher. But keep staring at that base long enough, and it'll start to look like somebody just frisbee'd it through his legs, or it just dropped out of his buttocks.
  7. Yeah, I screwed that one up. Sorry. I thought we were discussing Bryce Harper.
  8. Olerud made it look easy. Kingman made it look hard. And, of course, Wilmer made moving his body look hard. And looking at Asdrubal Cabrera was like watching Earl Campbell play football. He looked like he needed to be taken out of the game immediately after every play.
  9. Bob Klapisch, most recently of The Bergen Record and more famously of both The New York Post and The Daily News, is about as textbook a definition of tabloid sportswriter there be. Well, he's leaving that game for the broadsheets, announcing that he's gone to work for The New York Times. He'll be covering both the Mets and the Yankees with The Gray Lady. Fun Fact: Bob is half-Brazilian and speaks Portuguese fluently. Don't tell ICE.
  10. He had been a minor league free agent, so I kind of guessed that he was participating in camp without a guaranteed contract.
  11. It's cool how the the torn-away part of the address label on the front of the magazine is right under his foot, as if his spikes are tearing away at it.
  12. http://d6vrtzdlbankn.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/0002_Steve-700x420.jpg > Hey, I'm talented, inconsistent, handsome-but-sad, married-to-a-Contemporary-Christian-vocalist Steven Matz. I get it. I get why you don't get me. When folks give up the long hit, some guys are like Bartolo, and get all zen and just detach themselves from the disappointment. Some other guys are like Leiter, getting angry, but turning that anger into focused adrenaline. Some guys are like Pedro and do a little of both — act unflapped as the batter rounds the bases, and then unleash on the next hitter. Then there are guys like me. I see the ball fly toward the gap, and I make that "Oh, God, it's happening again to me!" face. It comes across as fatalistic and defeated. Bad body language follows and I don't focus and the next guy gets away from me, and soon the game gets away from the team. I get it. I'm not the first. Ron Darling used to make whiney faces after a big hit, and he's always telling folks how he's fourth all-time in Mets wins. You know what he had? He had Keith coming over to the mound to tell him to stop with the defeated face, and get his head out of his ass and back into the game. https://c.o0bg.com/rf/image_1200w/Boston/2011-2020/2018/10/05/BostonGlobe.com/Sports/Images/AP_8610270319.jpg?uuid=HIjaxMjREeisgZdWJ9Rrpw> But I don't have a Keith. I'm one Keith short of being Ron Darling or somebody. Maybe my new catcher Ramos is Keithy. I don't know yet. But I've got something Ron Darling never had. I've got a reason. I wear #32 on my jersey, and this year, I'm making that meaningful, dedicating my season to the memory of Tom Hausman. Every strike I throw, any successful thing I do that you feel you might want to cheer, give a passing thought to the legacy of my fellow Mets #32, Tom Hausman, the first-ever Mets free agent signee, and a gloriously injury prone (but decent enough when healthy) swing-man over 4+ years during the Mets cultural valley that was the Torre era. We're both handsome mo-fos too. https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/8674/8674-486634Fr.jpg> https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/xTgAAOSwJyxcm4Rc/s-l300.jpg> So root for me this year. And if you can't bring yourself to do that when you see me on the mound, make it an occasion to root for Old Tom. I'm pitching for both of us. And if folks cheer for both of us in 2019, I'm certain that ... ... I'm certain of what? What's gonna HAPPEN?! The season's started, but not my season, so there's still time to tell me.
  13. That's why Christmas is pretty.
  14. YOUR SEASON HAS COME! Fuck it, I want a 2019 slogan.
  15. I need to set that to music.
  16. I've got to imagine that concession service is generally a shit show on opening day. A sellout. Baptism of fire for the new staff. Equipment turned on for the first time in months. You crack open the inventory to find out that you have 60,000 packets of mustard but none of ketchup (and, strangely, 1,000 packets of duck sauce). Plus it's cold as as the grave so an inordinate number of people are going to be hanging on the concourse just to get out of the breeze and rub against somebody. They'll also be looking for hot cocoa and shit like that doesn't sell the rest of the year, which is unavailable except at no more than one or two select spots, and they're making it at a 1,000 miles-per-hour to meet the demand, so who knows it's gonna come out? And you're looking for warmth from everything. So you buy a "hot" pretzel, and you're delighted when it's handed to you and it warms your frozen fingers, but when you get back to your seat, it's cold, staler than a Bob Hope routine, and you're feeling rope-a-doped that you waited on line for 10 minutes and then forked over $7. Get into the park early, hit the most reliable concessionaire that you know from previous visits (at Nats Park, it's Ben's Chili Bowl), and count yourself lucky if it's edible.
  17. You got a place to eat? I'd recommend Las Cruces but it closed 20 years ago.
  18. Are the Mets using a 2019 marketing slogan? Somehow, I think that, "The 2019 Mets: No Exotic Diseases Yet!" falls a bit short.
  19. Oops, I misunderstood. She was talking about McCutcheon, not Harper. I agree that he shouldn't be a Phillie. If he can't return to the Bucs, I think he should be a: Tiger Astro Oriole Twin
  20. I kind of love it. If he's gonna play the heel, he might as well play it as a Phillie. Meanwhile, the Nats (the winless Nats) not only lost their best player, they've lost all their character. They go into game two not having yet scored their first run. Harper's name is going to be all over their press clippings tomorrow.
  21. You know how we win on Opening Day? With a roster! Amazingly, with a couple of well-timed releases earlier in the spring, the Mets were able to add two to the roster without putting anybody on the 60-Day. Nice.
