I'm not smart on such matters. But I think it's been measured a few times (https://www.businessinsider.com/mets-bobby-bonilla-deal-smart-2015-7here's one), and argued that the Bonilla deal worked for the Mets.

Petey probably has more than he showed last year. Or he's worth a second look, maybe. His peripherals were stronger than the ERA would suggest, except the homeruns. He gave up a lot in the majors last year, but that's totally uncharacteristic of his long minor league track record to date. I dunno. I think Callaway liked his bulldogginess or some quality, too. He's put up some really impressive ERAs in the high minors. Attractive WHIPs too, for folks who are into that sort of thing. Again, I dunno. Maybe Al Leiter thinks he's peaches.

Yount wasn't sure early in his career if his heart was with baseball or golf. By his third season, I think (he came up at 18), he committed and his game turned the corner. But I wonder if some of the ambiguity was due to the fate of Larry.

I may be thinking of someone else. Verrett got Rule-Fived away FROM the Mets by Baltimore, waived, claimed by Texas, waived, and re-claimed by the Mets. Know who I'm thinking of? Darren O'Fucking'Day. The Mets grabbed him as a Rule-Fiver from Anaheim, but when they tried to sneak him through waivers at the end of the spring, Texas grabbed him up. It actually worked out pretty good for Texas ... and great for Baltimore, who grabbed him off of Texan waivers two years later, getting 391 appearances and an All-Star selection out of him since 2012.

=Centerfield post_id=5259 time=1553713965 user_id=65] Well it looks like G-Fafif started the IGT already. And since he stays on until they win, that should take us until about April 23. After that, maybe go by seniority? Edgy, KC, then the JCL/FK brothers. That should be enough to get us to the All-Star break.

And it looks like we have a roster! Congrats to late additions Drew Peterson, Tomás Nido, and Pete® Alonso! Machinations still haven't been announced, but we'll likely see Fray-Fray and Lowrie (in addition to d'Arnie) added to the 10-Day, Céspedes and Drew Smith added to the 60-Day, and a spot on the roster will also have to be cleared for Ávilan. He should move into The Big Duck. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ad/Big_Duck_2018_05.jpg/1200px-Big_Duck_2018_05.jpg>

Nah, I'm good if they hit opening day with Smith at first base. He's earned something this spring too. Alonso gets the vote of confidence of making the opening day roster, Smitty gets the vote of confidence in getting the opening day start. Wins all around. Alonso can soak it all in and start in game two. Nobody's going to get rusty if they each start six games in 10, with outfield appearances by Smitty and DH opportunities allowing them both that much time, along with pinch hitting and defensive subbing the other four days. As injuries and performance indicate, their roles will expand or contract. Hooray for everybody, you know?

Opening day roster party at my house, Pete-headz!

The lack of a Stacey deGrom presence was a downer. Contract signing press conferences need wives and babies.

"Brodie, Edgy DC of the Crane Pool here. Congratulation on the deal. Now that it's done, do you see this deal as a baseline from which you can work from in approaching Zach Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard? Do you see those opportunities opening up now?"

That shit's only halfway through the alphabet. I'll be damned if you're gonna start the season without Hey Nineteen-ing me. It's typical of me. I get jerked around, like, A LOT. I help save the 2016 season by working it like a velociraptor down the stretch. I'm starting games and spin-rating, and suddenly a depleted staff is re-energized and we make the post season. So, the next year, I get like half a season of starts. And I didn't prosper. I OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGE that I didn't prosper. But the Mets kind of lost faith in me even as I was turning a corner, but come on, I missed the first half of the season with a partially torn UCL after pitching for my beloved Puerto Rico. That's some serious shit. I'd already been through spinal fusion surgery in the minors and it was all very disturbing. I didn't feel the same confidence letting my curveball rip. So, you know, a lot of teams were all, like, "Hey, Mets, if you've lost faith in that fake Puerto Rican guy, we'll take him off your hands for some future interests." And suddenly, the fickle Mets were all, like, "No, fuck off. He's our boy. You know why? Spin rate, bitches." I guess I was happy, but I hadn't really been feeling like I was their boy. So they give me another shot. In the bullpen. I'm all, like, "WHAT? THE? FUCK?" I'm no bullpenner. But I'm a dude, so I pour myself into my work. The Mets know I'm a starter, of course, so I think if I tear ass as a long reliever, they're bound to give me another chance. I mean, their fifth starter is Jason Vargas and he's a vet that got hurt in spring training. Something's got to give. You know what I did? I tore ass. I didn't further tear my UCL neither. And then I waited patiently, while they cycled through starters. Starters that weren't named Lugo. They threw starts to the likes of Matt Harvey (LOL!) and P.J. Conlon, and they refused to deploy the stud missile that was biding his time in the pen, and bailing all these fakers out, no less. I finally get a chance in the rotation at the end of May. Oh, first they had to "stretch me out," which is bullshit. Like I never pitched into the fifth before and it would be like thin oxygen or something. So I tore ass, which I am wont to do, in the first two starts, got hit hard in my my third, and then pitched more or less OK in the next two. I say that's a pretty good array of starts for a guy who has been banned from the rotation all that time. Be patient and you'll see more of ... nothing. They sent me back to the pen. And then the parade of pretenders starts again. Oswalt, Gagnon, Flexen, Blevins. JERRY FUCKING BLEVINS got his first career start and I'm sitting there in the bullpen revving my engines like a doofus. Nothing I can do about it except pitch well, dazzle 'em with spin rate, and tear all kinds of ass ... and maybe grumble about not starting. It ain't fair, but it's a living. How's it going to spill out in 2019? Oh, wait ... ¡Viva, Puerto Rico!

=kcmets post_id=5214 time=1553700831 user_id=53] I never heard of NEXTSTOP either. Funny, I saw HoJo going with the pitch and hitting a laced grounder all the way to the wall for a stand up double. I'm the lone HoJo vote so far.

=Centerfield post_id=5210 time=1553700104 user_id=65] Koos. Though I do love Wright's swing, the photo is kinda shitty.

A bonus in that HoJo cover is Keith playing Penis Bat in the background.

Michael Taylor will be out for an extended period after busting up both his knee and hip in spring training. Howie Kendrick is hurt, too, and Bryce Harper is expected to be unavailable for 13 years. Maybe Austin Jackson is going to get a call after all. We're going to be looking at something akin to: Adam Eaton, rf Trea Turner, ss Anthony Rendon, 3b Juan Soto, lf Brian Dozier, 2b Ryan Zimmerman, 1b Yan Gomes, c Max Scherzer, sp Victor Robles, cf

But most would be hard-pressed to match good Matthew's .000 / .095 / .000 // .095 performance (0-for-18). But he did have an RBI! Sometimes the only difference between a long-time major leaguer and a long-time AAA-er is that the former had the luck or grace or whatever to have a hot hand at the exact time that he gets called up. By that standard, den Dekker exhibited very little grace. And left very little to remember. Let's remember him anyway.

A theory: He was signed because deGrom liked pitching to him more than others. deGrom got some work in with Ramos, and suddenly he's thrilled to be pitching to Wilson. Plus, his bat in the lineup has a better chance of getting deGrom out of the position where giving up one run means a no-decision and giving up two means a loss.

The guy plays seven and a half years in Cincinnati but won't give Syracuse a try. Ouch.
