Ichiro Suzuki was born in the 22nd century. I'm not sure how that can be true, but it nonetheless is.

How strange that my turn to ask the big Hey, Nineteen! question should come now, when my whole baseball existence is in limbo. How strange that it should fall in this hard little center of the Mets roster filled with catchers. I'm filing just before Tomás Nido, who took my job, and just after Patrick Mazeika, who's gonna take his job, because what comes around goes around, you smug little shit. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be bitter, but I'll be fucked if I ain't bitter. I mean, not long ago in the big picture, Matt Harvey was the most celebrated pitcher in baseball. Dark Knight, "Har-vey's Bet-ter!" chants, chasing models around town. I mean, he was a tool, but a valuable tool, right? And I got traded for him. Me, Devon Mesoraco! The overpaid oft-injured catcher from Cincinnati way. And yeah, Fangraphs says he had more value than me after the trade, but fuck them. I was Mr. Teammate Guy and he was ... Matt Harvey LOL. Well, I'm tired of that good teammate bullshit. I signed a minor league contract and the last thing I expected was to play minor league ball. That's just not how I roll. I got a wife and kid and when we filled out our tax return, under OCCUPATION, I put "Major League Baseball Player." Now the Mets are trying to make a liar out of me. A federal criminal! Lying on a federal form! I'm sorry, but no. So I didn't report to the minors with my minor league contract. I say I had an oral agreement with the Mets to be granted a release if I didn't make the team. Some grown-ass man named "Brodie" tells me that if I thought I had an agreement, I should have asked for it in writing. My agents over at Jet Sports Management are all, "Ummm ... let me get back to you." So yeah, that's the sitchoo: (1) I've got a contract binding me to the Mets, (2) the Mets farmed me out, (3) I refuse to report, so the Mets don't have to pay me, even though (4) they are retaining my rights. And now (5) I've threatened to retire, and (6) the Mets are all, "Well, we're calling your bluff, but it's not like even if you did retire, we'd let go of your rights." And (7) I'm like "Oh, consarn it all!" How strange. It's all a massive pile of bullshit. But somethings got to give, right? The Mets don't want to dick me around all year, and I don't want to not play all year, as much as I don't want to play minor league ball. It's a gen-u-ine impasse. A Mexican standoff. <GFYCAThttps://thumbs.gfycat.com/GrimyBlackArkshell-max-1mb.gifhttps://thumbs.gfycat.com/GrimyBlackArkshell-max-1mb.gif> If it breaks, anything can happen. If it doesn't, only one thing can happen. So what's going to happen?

I think the reluctance about pinch-running for Ramos is about losing his bat if the game remained tied or stayed close. I think today's managers are always ready for a war of attrition and always want to have one minors weapon in the bag than the other guy.

Justin Wilson, man. JUSSIE!! He came from the Cubs! CHICAGO LOVES JUSSIE!!

http://metsminors.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/patrick-mazeika-behind-plate-e1492790240400.jpg> Hello, I'm Pat! When ashie says "Next!" he's talking about me. You've seen plenty of other catchers? Well, I'm the next one down the pike. I'm a good-contact/fair-powered lefty-hitting catcher with some rough edged receiving skills that are not without their graces. Josh Thole may be both my ceiling and my floor, if you get what I mean. But I get on base more than that guy ever did. I'm probably stronger, too. I'm making the top prospect lists, but sort of in the fringey area — around 22-28 among Mets prospects — but if one more part of my game hardens into an asset, I'm legit. I guess that's true of a lot of fringey guys, but I'm me, and it matters to me. PRIDE! You can be a doubter. Go ahead and doubt. But I'm an eight-rounder out of Stetson University, and if that sounds familiar, it's because a guy named JACOB deGROM was a ninth-rounder out of the same école. Hope springs eternal! I'm going to be springing out of Bingo to start the year, but, you know, catching is a highly unstable field. I might get rushed when somebody breaks a finger or I might break one of my own. Fate is mean. But hope yet reigns. What should I hope for in 2019?

What comes around goes around. It just takes some time sometimes. Such is it with the Syracuse International League franchise, affiliated with the Mets this year for the first time since the beginning — 1962 — when a lowly Syracuse Chiefs team was shared as an affiliate between the Mets and the Washington Senators. Those Syracusans (managed by Mr. Double No-Hit Johnny Vandermeer) finished dead last, 41 whole games behind the pacesetters in 1962, so the new version of the team doesn't exactly have a tough act to follow. The latter-day team, re-christened the Mets (as the parent organization is also the owner), is as notable for who is absent — starting pitchers P.J. Conlon, Zach Lee, and Walter Lockett; reliever Chris Mazza, and (!!) infielder Gavin Cecchini. They've moved Travis Taijeron to first, making room among the pile of big league vets in the outfield for Tim Tebow. Travis had never played first before last season in Albuquerque, where he logged 22 games at the cold corner. This opening was made possible by both Pete Alonso and Dom Smith making the roster with the big club. Cecchini would seem to be a victim of numbers, but no, he's been bumped in favor of organization man David Thompson, so he looks like he's in a make or break year. The openings in the rotation left behind by Conlon, Lee, and Lockett appear to be going to swingmen Casey Coleman ("Watchoo talkin' 'bout?! You can look it up!") and Hector Santiago. Santiago was pretty smelly out of a starting role in camp, so they saw something that didn't come through in the games. Taking the Vandermeer role is Tony DeFrancesco, arriving from Las Vegas with most of his staff. A notable exception is former replacement player Joel Chimelis, arriving from the Houston system with an impressive track record. He coaches the hitters. Altogether, 21 of 25 players have major league experience, including many years at the big league level for three of their veteran outfielders. The action begins Thursday with the Mets (yeah!) hosting Pawtucket. No starter has been announced, but look for Drew Gagnon to get the bump. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/2004/08/03/CBcUU7Jx.jpg> The damn thing is over!

Stupidest rally ever going on.

Or a seven-run lead. Remember last year, when the team opened 11-1, but we all suspected it was unsustainable because they were getting a remarkable number of two-out hits? Well, I'm not thinking about that right now.

Let's not go right to Diaz with a five-run lead.

If the Mets hold on, I'm calling that walk by Rosario the TURNING POINT OF THE GAME.

Well, that was a nice, clean, shutout inning.

I think his glove may not be his calling card.

The freakin' balls on the Mets brass not to get rid of him 10 minutes after the World Series.

If Familia has that splitter working, he could be a terror. If he doesn't start throwing strikes, he could be a different sort of terror.

J.D. Davis is a true Met!!

No, that's pretty much the asshole I imagined.

Justin Wilson's CBS-Radio bumper had all the animation of a sleepy Sylvester Stallone. Let's pinch-run for Ramos here. We have two centerfielders on the bench.

Infield hit by the catcher is always a good omen. Do it again, McNeilio.

Go, Jussie.

I"m guessing Nimmo leads the league in strikeouts by a couple of standard deviations at this point.

Gary just put in an endorsement for Gil Hodges' enshrinement. He goes back on the ballot next year.

And that was the last anyone heard from Johnny.

>>> "So, what are they talking about on the Crane Pool, Dear?" >>> >>> "Well, to be honest ... um ... my cock."
