I want to work in the alumni office, man.

Pitching change means Mike Torrez' record of most walks in a game as a Met is safe for another day.

Wayne: You know one thing that the 1984 World Series didn't have? Howie: THE CUBS! HA!

Colton means "Black Town," or "Coal Town." Black Town Beach is a great name for a series of detective novels. What really slaughters me are the rows of fans lined up at the rail for autographs, and most all of them to be thinking, "Who else is coming? Any real Mets?"

They've made it all the way to the top of the minors, but nothing short of a cascade failure will give them a shot at a big league spot. We are generally solid defenders and leaders, who just don't have the bat to catch up with MLB pitching. While we're still playing, we've more or less moved onto the coaching track the last few years. Some of us are hitting under .200, but we're willing to mentor the younger starter on the team and we give the prospect pitchers a steady solid hand to throw to twice a week while they hope to join the show. Crash is our hero. So yeah, that may make us the textbook definition of organization guys, but I'm Colton Plaia, and so far this year, I'm 1-for-1 with a two run double, and when I can look up at the scoreboard and see a 3.000 OPS next to my name, damned if that big league dream I thought I had put aside doesn't start filling my heart and my head all over again. I haven't been a disaster with the bat, either. Yeah, a .252 / .324 / .347 // .671 career line isn't going to put me in a lot of headlines, but by backup catcher standards, it's not that bad either. So think of me. I mean, you know, if Ramos gets hurt, and Nido gets drunk, and d'Arnaud gets arrested, and Rivera misses a plane and Mesoraco doesn't get his head out of his ass, and Mazeika isn't yet ready, please think of me. And you know ... why wait? Think of me now. It may be the last time this season you think of me. Maybe the last time ever. But think nonetheless and tell me what my season is going to look like.

Sorry to be late with the Lucies. After waiting until the last second to post their roster, they still haven't publicly announced who their non-uniform staff is, but I'm pretty sure at least one of the three is no longer with the team, possibly all three. Also, they didn't initially include MLB rehabbers Travis d'Arnaud and Todd Frazier. So I post the roster now, with three games already gone in their season. If you've got to be in the minors, St. Lucie is probably a pretty sweet assignment — at least until the summer months. You don't have to go north and get used to a chilly new climate, you don't have to find new digs at the end of spring training, the bus trips are probably pretty consistently shorter than those for the Sally League below you and the Eastern League above you, you get to play in a well-maintained stadium that's built to Major League standards, you have state-of-the-art training facilities, you get to hang out with all the rehabbing Major-Leaguers, get some free meals out of them, and hover in their babe-magnet aura. Like I said, sweet all around. Another thing that made working the team out tough was figuring out who was in the starting rotation. Nine of the pitcher on the staff were primarily starters last season for Columbia or Brooklyn, but the guys they're starting so far were relievers last season. This led to an epiphany: Perhaps guys seeing their first action in Brooklyn, after a full season in college, end up in the pen not because the team projects them to be relievers long-term, but rather because they feel these guys have already thrown plenty of innings. And the team just wants them to get a handful of innings so the coaches can observe and coach them, before returning them to the rotation the next season. Tommy Wilson, for instance, was the ace of his college rotation, but relieved for Brooklyn. Would you be surprised to see him return to starting this season? I would not! Undoubtedly, the featured player on this roster is the super-talented and super-nerdy Desmond Lindsay. Injuries and underperformance have so-far marred the professional career of the former first-round draft choice. But a re-tooled swing led to an impressive mini-season in Arizona, where his power woke up, so there's a lot of hope that he has turned a corner. But so far this season, he his walloping to the tune of an .083 batting average. That's a lot of a gap for the hope to fill in. Before Brandon Nimmo gets too down on himself, he needs to take a look at Lindsay's lot. But really, that's the story so far. The Lucies are 0-3. They've been in every game, including a 1-0 kick in the balls on opening day, but 0-3 is 0-3. They haven't been a high-achieving team. That's actually too kind. The offense really hasn't checked in at all yet. Former third-round pick Matt Winaker has been their top hitter, going 4-11 (.364), but that's with no extra-base hits — and get this (you're not even ready for what I'm about to say) — he's actually got an OBP (.333) lower than his batting average. That's just fucked up. With no extra bases, no walks, and an OBP below his batting average, he's hitting just about the emptiest .364 in the history of .364 batting averages. And I say that, while declaring outright that he's been their best hitter. What the fuck am I talking about? I'll tell you what I'm talking about. That lack of extra-base hits? Winaker has not kept that dubious skill to himself. The entire team has had one extra base hit through three games. And it was a double, so I can state that more dramatically. The entire team has had one extra BASE through three games. There have been 91 trips to the plate, and one extra base. And yes, Travis d'Arnaud (2-for-7) and Todd Frazier (0-for-7) are part of that show So, we look for good news on the pitching side of things, and in fairness, there's been something to build on there. The entire bullpen has allowed only one earned run so far in 12 1/3 innings, for a 0.73 ERA. The star among stars out there has been double-last name reliever Ryley Gillam. Ryley's two shutout innings thus far have included five strikeouts and no walks. Gilliam gave us a sneak-preview of this sort of dominance last year in Brooklyn, throwing 17 1/3 innings and striking out 31 batters — which is an absolutely savage number when you think about it. He was 2018's fifth rounder out of Clemson, and he could come fast at this rate. Opening Day starter Kevin Smith took the hard loss after going 4 2/3, giving up one run while whiffing six and walking one. He was even better in Brooklyn last season, throwing 23 2/3 innings and giving up only two earned runs. That's an unconsciously Eckersleyan 0.76 ERA, so it'll be VERY interesting to see if that crazy performance translates at all to the starting rotation. Kevin was 2018's seventh-rounder out of Georgia. They try to get their revenge on Bradenton tomorrow. Kyle Wilson is on the bump. https://doublegsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/peterson2-e1529065494836.jpghttps://doublegsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/peterson2-e1529065494836.jpg Something's wrong. I'm the big shot lefthanded first-round draft choice who hasn't had Tommy John surgery yet. That doesn't really make sense, does it. As soon as the Mets drafted me, I got set to take a two-year vacation. When they examined me and cleared me to play, I was, like, "Can you take another look?" That's me, David Peterson. I come to the Mets from the University of Oregon, from where no Mets have come before — pitting me in a race with Stephen Nogosek to be the first. I got nice lefthanded version of the Syndergaard build (6'6", 240) and he hasn't been cut open yet either. I signed so late that I only got into three games with Brooklyn my debut year, but now, it looks like the Mets have me on the fast track, giving me a half season with Columbia, where I killed it (1.82 ERA in 59 1/3 innings), but fell back to earth with St. Lucie (4.33 in 68 2/3). That reality check isn't slowing down the Mets any. They have me opening in Binghamton, and if I flourish there, I could be in Syracuse in no time. I've probably passed Kay, and while there's talent in front of me, not a lot of it has my pedigree. So you know, my goal is Flushing by September, though the Mets might call me up before then if a bunch of guys fall through the cracks, or maybe call me up not at all. Still, if I make AA by mid-season, my plan is to Tebow through the upper minors, with a half season at each level, would be almost complete. But nothing ever quite works out that quickly, all tied up with a bow. So how's it gonna work out?

Yeah, the Yard Goats, Flying Squirrels, and Rubber Ducks mock them mercilessly.

Not only did Syracuse drop their opener to the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-3 in 10 innings after Daniel Zamora blew the lead in regulation, but a minor insult was added to the injury, as Jenrry Mejia came on in the bottom of the 10th to earn the save for the Sox.

I'm all for pun and games, but shouldn't it be summer in the 'Hamton? Since he's the only other lefty, I guess you're referring to Blake Taylor as the other of the two top prospect left handers. Lefty Specialist wrote: Cool. Braxton Lee is only 5 days old and already he's playing in Bingo. And I thought Tebow moved through the minors fast. Sorry about the errata. I was rushing to get to choir practice. Sadly, practice was pushed back a half hour, so all my rushing was for naught. The second lefty is, of course, Kay, who had already been announced in this thread as Opening Day starter. And like with the parent club, Opening Day belonged to the good guys. The Ponies beat New Hampshire 5-2, as Kay went a whopping 4 1/3 innings, giving up just one unearned run. Mazeika played first base and batted third, collecting two hits, including a double, the Rumble Po's only extra-base hit of the night. =MFS62 post_id=6436 time=1554411007 user_id=60] Rip this fucking place down and build a place where they can win. (And a place where they can score enough runs to be exciting would help, too.) Later

Well, that's a shame. The only team that looks more stocked with prospects this year seems like Columbia. It looks like I jumped the gun a bit on Mickey Jannis. He's going to start the season on the Injured List, along with others. But even better, the Rumble Ponies will have David Peterson starting with them, giving them two big-shot top-pick prospect lefthanders in the rotation. The coaching staff is familiar. Bench coach Ender Chavez is, of course, the older brother of Mets hero Endy Chavez. Tony Jaramillo is the nephew of highly respected MLB hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who once interviewed for the Mets' manager job. Tony was raised by Uncle Rudy after his parents got busted for dealing heroin (yeeps). Jonathan Hurst is related to 1994 Met Jonathan Hurst in that they are both the same person, although the pitching coach version is about twice as large. First pitch in five minutes. Enjoy. Wait, when did the Mets get Canó?

Shmoo.

This game needs to be Petered.

Bring on Jussie Wilson.

Yup. The only Nats run was scored without a hit.

Nimmo didn't waste much time getting his first whiff in. Nimmo 2019: Not Rich Becker, but a loving tribute to Rich Becker. Meanwhile, the Nats go up 1-0 on squeezie.
