It says something, I guess, that the Mets were willing to let Straw fly the colors in a studio shot for Recovery Today.

Agreed about Frank. Even without seeing the trajectory of the ball, he seems way off-balance. As for McLain, he certainly is at the top of any list of self-destructive pitchers of that era. But he was a top pitcher as recently as 1969. I guess by November 1970, after his first shit season, he might be ready to make his confession. It just seemed kinda soon, so I thought of a guy who was a little further removed from top form.

Here's the Mets vs. Marlins 2007 scuffle for an undercard. The guy who got the worst of it? Sandy Alomar, Sr. -
I'm still trying to find out which star pitcher ruined his career with alcohol and asses. My bet is on future Met Dean Chance. He roomed with Bo Belinsky with the Angels. If that story wasn't clouded in a haze of smoke and tuchuses then I don't know what.

I'm guessing that Alonso's blow is all about keeping him from absorbing any planned retaliation. He's about as close to Hoskins' opposite number as they come. -

The problem with the 2007 fight is that the playing-out-the-string Marlins had their bags packed to go home. After Blastings Thrilledge apparently provoked them with what they saw as an over-demonstrative homerun celebration, the Marlins suddenly had a burning motivation to eliminate the Mets before calling it a season. The Marlins came out and scored seven in the first the next day. -

-- Yadier Molina pulled off a straight steal of 3rd base on Tuesday. No truth to the rumors that the pitcher, catcher, and manager of the opposing team (Brewers) have all since been not only fired but deported. Excellent work. We would have also accepted: -- Yadier Molina pulled off a straight steal of 3rd base on Tuesday, after breaking from second on Monday. -

I t'ink context matters. In a few weeks, this game may loom larger or smaller, but I'm predisposed toward Yes.

When Dwight Gooden was a Met, he famously consented to the Mets' directon that he bat righty, even though he insisted he was a lefthanded hitter. Not only were the Mets trying to protect his arm, but Ralph and Tim in the booth seemed to feel like every team in the league would do the same to protect a young star pitcher like Dwight — not that there had ever been a young star pitcher like Dwight. But no matter what every team would do, that ethic has been out the window with the Mets of recent vintage, with fully four fifths of the Mets' rotation being cross dominant. DeGrom, Syndergard and Wheeler throw righthanded and bat lefthanded, while Steven Matz has the Ricky Henderson curse of throwing lefthanded and batting righthanded. Very strange. Thats remarkable to me. The Mets have every reason to protect this pack of starters, but values have changed. Only Jason Vargas, regarded in some quarters as the team's best hitting pitcher, bats and throws from the same side. But Vargas hasn't shown the power the others have. (Vargas is 21 for 107 lifetime, but has never gone deep.) Three different pitchers have now homered for the Mets this season, and while I haven't looked it up, I imagine that either establishes or seriously threatens the team record. If he gets a chance, Gselly can hit a little, too.

Summer in the 'Hamton: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2019
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
An 11-6 thumping of The Akron Rubber Ducks allowed The Binghamton Mets to move into first place on the same evening as their parent team. Winners of seven of their last 10, the Little Horses are now a half game up on the competition in The Eastern League Eastern Division. They are hoping to put some distance between themselves and the competition as Chris Mazza — back from a brief visit to AAA — returns to the Ponies' rotation. The game featured three hits each from Sam Haggerty and Patrick Mazeika. PatMaz was playing first base, where he has seen as much time as he has behind the plate, where he has been sharing duties with Ali Sanchez. Notably, even in breaking out for 11 runs, the the Ponies still didn't hit a homer. But, having now won seven of their last 10, it looks like much of their early season slumping is behind them. Barrett Barnes, the former Pittsburgh first-rounder, signed this offseason after a summer in The Atlantic League, was tearing it up before hitting the injured list on April 19. (Barrett was a Sugarland Skeeter who is actually from Sugarland, Texas, a fact that initially had me curious, before prompting me finally to ask, "Why is a team from Sugarland, Texas in The Atlantic League?") Anytips, Barrett made his first six games with Bingo count, slugging two homers, and driving in five runs whilst pasting up a .286 / .400 / .619 // 1.019. That's some first-round shit. Among the pitchers young Barrett is providing offense for is fellow first-rounder Anthony Kay. AK owned AKron last week in throwing perhaps the best game of his young career — firing off six innings of one-hit shutout ball, while striking out 10 and walking three. STONY BROOK REPRESENT! Steven "White" Villines continues to be a deadly force out of the bullpen. While his sidearming ways gives the opponents a different look, as they say, nobody's getting a particularly good look at all. The Villifier has yet to allow a runner to cross the plate in his first 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight. Interestly, he's done this while not yet being the ground ball machine that he has shown himself to be throughout his career. Adjustment? Small sample size? Who's to say? Tonight they go for the four-game sweep over Akron, and with The Mazza Ball on the mound, I like their chances. So, with one game left in the series, and a chance to sweep, the Mets have Philly working against themselves, and Rhame attempts to make the last out by playing dodgeball with Hoskins. Nothing like putting their best hitter at risk to get all the Phils rowing together again. The Mets might want to sit Alfonso tomorrow. -
And they move up to 14th in the National League, ahead of Milwaukee's 5.37.

That error by Hernandez was a Little League-quality muff. It's pretty great, Met-wise, when Arrieta calls out Harper and the team comes out and makes two infield errors the next day. I can only speculate as to whether there's a cause-effect relationship, but I can see a scenario where everybody in the clubhouse has to decide if they're on Team Jake or Team Bryce and they come out tight the next day.
