  1. Get me a clip of that Youngblood snag.
  2. That's a shame. He could have had a real useful suber-subbing second half to his career. He just couldn't find his groove, and his personality was too big to find a home on anybody's bench.
  3. The funny thing is that the whole point of their wildly successful mid-80s campaign of "Gimme a light ... a Bud Light" was to distinguish the beer from "Lite Beer" or "Lite Beer from Miller." Miller owned the syllable Lite/Light in the beer world and Budweiser needed to wrest it back into neutral territory if their beer was going to have a chance. It was training the customer but also training the bartender and the liquor store clerk that the word "Light" did not have to mean "Lite Beer." And they were successful. Miller was forced to sort of rebrand "Lite Beer" as "Miller Lite." Just another low-cal offering in the marketplace, and no longer THE low-cal offering. But they weren't as successful at teaching the world that the two spellings meant two different things, and 35 years later, Athletic editors are letting "Bud Lite" just fly by. My takeaway from the oral history above is that, by mid-1985, Dwight Gooden was well on his way to an addiction problem.
  4. When he was in the lineup, anyhow.
  5. =dgwphotography post_id=40240 time=1594414588 user_id=78] My first move would be to create a fan relations group comprised of members of the CPF who would meet monthly to help implement changes to make things more fan friendly.
  6. Two things from If at First Hernandez has a slightly different take on the origin of Gorman's nickname. He said folks called him that because he was a lefty who brought it as slow as Koufax brought it fast. For like seven years, the Braves had two closers — Camp and Gene Garber. One would would get the bulk of the save opportunities in one year, and the other would get the lion's share the next, so they were easy to conflate. I mean, it's understandable that fans might do that, but Hernandez reported that after the homer, when he came to the mound, a shell-shocked Gorman said, "I had no idea that Gene Garber had that kind of power!"
  7. Strange that the Camp homer is so memorable that the Harper homer is mostly forgotten. I had to be reminded of it too. In fact, you mention "Terry Harper of the Braves" and my mind immediately summons Terry Forster and has a hard time putting him aside, but I know there weren't two game-tying homers hit by relievers.
  8. Interfering gets a bad rap. If I'm going to own a team, my fingers are going to be in every pie there is. On the real question, I chose option 3.
  9. Look at the package on that guy!
  10. They may well have, and probably mostly did, but bringing them up in three-five day stints rather than for two-four weeks seems to me to be no way to find out who might might be least sucky, or possibly even good.
  11. Not saying it to brag or nothing, but I've been kneeling during the anthem for a while now, and nobody at Camden has given me shit. If you ever get another chance to attend a ballgame, I encourage you to give it a try, and maybe give some cover to the player torn between his conscience and his job.
  12. What's missing is the corresponding move. Who will they be adding to the roster? By the way, I hated how the Rhames were rotated in and out last season, with the Mets trying to effectively field an eight-nine-ten-man bullpen by constantly rotating new guys into the back-end slots. The way they kept the door revolving, nobody really got a chance to find himself, make adjustments, and possibly establish himself as a big-league keeper.
  13. Part of the cartload of righthanded relievers brought over in the deadline selloff of 2017. Couldn't stick long in 2019 due to the walksies.
  14. It's a subjective opinion, but I've had the idea that West hasn't looked like he's belonged out there for the last decade or more. They've really set the hurdle high for inducting umps into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Only 10 have been inducted, only two of which went in this century, and one of those was from the pre-integration era. It'd really be a shame if the only way for an ump to fully show his merits is to stay on the field until he's collapsed in his boots.
  15. Pretty funny that the passage also invokes one of the team's founders.
  16. Fuck and yes and fuck and yes.

  18. Is there a reason Cohen is at the top of your wish list?

The Virginia Beach/Norfolk area is #2, after Austin, Texas. Maybe. Austin's got an hour trip to see the San Antonio Spurs, though. That's something.
  20. The Mets' former AAA home of Norfolk/Tidewater is the largest area with no teams in any of the four major sports leagues. I guess having usual candidates like Nashville, Louisville, Buffalo, New Orleans, Montreal etc. compete on the field to play their way up to the big leagues isn't an option.
  21. Donn Clendenon's stepdad Nish Williams was a Black Cracker.
  22. I grow more uncomfortable with this by the hour. I could be wrong, but I'm not getting the idea that the league has been thoughtful in providing the players, staffs, and umps with a safe workspace. And lest it be overlooked, many in those last two categories fall into the high-risk set. Guaranteeing safe work conditions is something close to a union's first responsibility. Beyond that, there's something akin to a class double standard. If a well-paid vet has concerns for his or his family's safety, he can bail. But if a sub-six-year player on the bubble of somebody's 40-man roster has the same concerns, he neither has the same resources to walk away nor the juice to protect himself from professional retaliation.

  24. I HATE the Georgia Peaches. Gosh, that was easy.
  25. I'm curious what name the Braves might change their name to so that I may hate them.
