  1. I could be wrong, but I think I knew this guy's sister way back.
  2. Interesting source there, as Rovell not only covers the business side of sports, but has specifically covered the sports drink industry. It's like his little sub-niche. Whether that makes this a bigger or smaller revelation, I can only speculate, but it's interesting.
  3. Yeah it is, but the real crime is the minor leagues being reduced to such meaninglessness that nobody really cares.
  4. Yeah, https://www.milb.com/gameday/red-wings-vs-mets/2019/06/03/575958#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=play-by-play,game=575958that's been the deal for the last year or two in the minors.

  6. The amazing thing about the Scully call is that Joe Garagiola is in the booth as well and I don't know if you hear two words out of the guy the whole rally.
  7. And yet, it was far better than the Bad News Bears TV show with Jack Warden as Butterworth, Meeno Peluce as Tanner, and Corey Feldman as Regi. And anyone who knows me knows I don't talk no shit about Meeno Peluce.
  8. I don't know. If the value of the team is really skyrocketing, then refinancing should be easy. They should be able to take out new loans against the new equity to pay off the old loans, like everybody did with their houses before 2008. But that may have been a manageable strategy until the next windfall right up until March 2020, but I can't imagine any teams have grown too much in value since then, and I expect that's why the Wilponian position has changed.
  9. It is pretty funny to see the team for sale because the owners overleveraged themselves to make the purchase in the first place, and are still overleveraged 20 years later, and all the potential bidders are running around trying to leverage up.
  10. I'm not sure consensus on what makes a good call is necessarily coming to the fore. Tim McCarver, Steve Zabriski, Francis X. Healy, and Ralph McFerrin Kiner on the outside looking in so far.
  11. Last out courtesy of a rare Mario Diaz appearance.
  12. Man, Bautista owned Dyson from the moment he stepped into the box there. It's like Dyson had nothing to throw, and knew anything in the zone was toast.
  13. That tends to be true. But then there are pitchers who don't hit many at all, and then hit one, and take a month to circle the bases. Also, there are situational homer. A postseason homer that changes the momentum of the game but there is still plenty more to do to get the win? You run the fuck around those bases.
  14. You have it more or less correct. The impact of the DH on average salaries is negligible and varies from year to year, with AL clubs generally needing one more starter, but NL clubs needing deeper benches and bullpens.
  15. That's some good writing. Mrs. Stallone: Was that the Fonz I saw leaving? Sylvester: Eh, he's not such a big deal. Did you know he did Peter Pan? Mrs. Stallone: You did porn.
  16. Kesich was a legit writer, with a handful of well received plays. But this was his story, having gone to Indiana and having a friend named Dave who carried his team most of the way through the Little 500. He parlayed his Oscar into a few more films — including the adaptation of The World According to Garp — but was done by 1986 after writing a second cycling story (American Flyers). He's a real interesting guy. He was born in Nazi-occupied Serbia, and is credited by some with coining the term "post-truth." Plus, he wrote what is quite possibly (likely?) the best sports movie ever.
  17. A four-man gang is a good starter size, though. It's hard to do the doo-wop without at least four guys.
  18. First player I remember having DJ-spun walkup music, as the PA blared "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" as he took the mound for his warmups in the first.
  19. Zachry once said he got some Getty gift certificates for appearing on Kiner's Korner, and then got rejected at Getty when he tried to use them.
  20. Wow, the players have already agreed to come in under imposed conditions not agreed to in print, and then the owners play that card? Come on.
  21. If they take the swooshes off the uniform, covid-19 would go away. #science
  22. Today is the anniversary of the Buckets repping MBtN with BANNERIFIC! at Banner Day 2015 at Citi Field.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Yesterday as a mental exercise I tried remembering who was on the current Mets. I had a hard time coming up with J.D. Davis' name. I even had a moment where I thought, "Oh, yeah! Michael Conforto!" I did this to remind myself that the Mets are more than just deGrom and Alonso, the only guys I've given much thought to over the last couple of months. In fairness to your older self, this is close to becoming the longest offseason in history. It's been 229 days since the end of the World Series. The 1994 strike into 1995 lasted 257 days.
  24. Worth noting that not only was this a 103-loss Astro lineup anchored by a young, merely good version of José Altuve. Also, if you believe the enhanced scorecard up above, they apparently played the entire game in bellbottoms.
