Peter Golenbock has co-written one terrific baseball book (The Bronx Zoo, 1979) and followed that with a long career writing or co-writing mostly drivel. Histories and memoirs that have been slapdash and formulaic. I was disturbed to read that he was allegedly partnering with Bobby Valentine on a memoir, and the sooner Lunchie checks him over the boards for that role, the better. His Amazin': The Miraculous History of New York's Most Beloved Baseball Team (2002), while more ambitious, unfortunately proved to be no exception to that pattern, and certainly failed to live up to it's title. But one of the few more interesting things he included was to start with a brief history of The New York Metropolitans (1883–1887) of the old American Association, an extinct early major league circuit that included several franchises still operating today. The connections are few, but they are the main source for the name "Mets" and they played at the original iteration of The Polo Grounds. The Mets came into being largely with a goal of claiming the real inheritance of both The Brooklyn Dodgers and The New York Giants, and somewhat wrestling for the New York legacy those west coast franchises left behind. While this has mixed success and failure, it's led to at least a little controversy as well now that the team is closing in on six decades old, having plenty of legacy of their own to exploit. But the legacy of the Metropolitans remains orphaned, and I type with the notion that Golenbock was on to something. I think (a) a small amount of history from the earlier team in Mets museum displays, ( an acknowledgment among the honorees in the team Hall of Fame (and retired "numbers") of legendary pitcher Tim Keefe and perhaps manager Jim Mutrie, and © maybe an occasional throwback uniform day seems like it would be educational and fun. And since the demise of the team occurred as several of the stars jumped to the Giants, with the Dodgers buying out the remaining assets, the connection isn't so non-linear as all that. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/NY_Metropolitans.jpg>

Brian Schneider's position has been rebranded from "quality control coach" to "field coordinator." I gather that the role bears some of the same functions ,but not all, and they sought a more accurate name for the was the role was evolving. The original announcement of the establishment a QCC reported The Schneid would “serve on the club's Major League field staff as a conduit between the front office, coaching staff and players on issues including game preparation, strategy, and analytics.” Although, I guess that it was originally Rojas in the role. So he's an ambassador between the suits and unis. But what he is expected to be ambassadoring is probably changing.

By all reckoning, camp has been cleared of extra players, and while there hasn't been a formal opening day roster announcement, it looks like we've pared down to 26 with no Scott Rice-type surprises. Nido beats out Joseph for the backup catcher slot, but really, that's only a surprise to a few stubborn staffers at MRC, who insisted on taking at face value reports that Joseph was on the 40-man, while nothing official from the Mets ever confirmed that. Mike Montgomery's release is a modest surprise. But he had an out clause in case he didn't make the roster, and I guess he exercised it. He was probably positioned to be the top starter for Syracuse, which would have made him the primary backup in case any of five vulnerable guys get hurt. He preferred to jump back into opening day free agency with a the sort of generic name that can get you overlooked. He departs seemingly having used the Mets camp as a free showcase for the other 29 teams. I hope he tipped the clubhouse staff on the way out the door. We'll dispense with including the free agents from now on, even though Montgomery is joining that list, and use this space to instead do what it does best, and celebrate your Mets roster. He may be smelling an opening day third base vacancy with Washington.

I'm sure the team would have liked that, but frequently markets are set from the ceiling down.

You say he died in Muscle Shoals, and I say "It Tears Me Up." [YOUTUBE]Y_2RcJbeIq8[/YOUTUBE]

Careful, man. Trying to be a man o' the people is almost always gonna blow up in your face.

My wife picked up a new favorite ridiculously hammy actor. She read that he appeared in Avatar, which neither of us had seen, so we tried it on for size. I found it dull and dumb and quit about 50% of the way through. Wifey subsequently found an https://www.overthinkingit.com/2010/01/13/6-reasons-avatar-sucks/amateur review of it from 2010 which including the following unprovoked but understandable Jerry Manuel-era burn: [bLOCKQUOTE]Being a human in Avatar is like playing for the New York Mets — no matter how great things seem to be going for you, you are eternally courting improbable and embarassing failure.[/bLOCKQUOTE] I mean, it'd've landed a little better if he hadn't mis-spelled "embarassing," but touché to him.

But it presumably also turns some balls in play to homeruns. If it's to keep patrons from reaching onto the field, it seemingly kind of serves to standardize the outcome of reaching onto the field. It does the reaching for them. Not to hijack the topic. [fimg=600]https://cdn1.thecomeback.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/wrigley-field-basket.jpg[/fimg]

A ninth-inning homer gives the Cards a 3-3 tie and the Mets end spring training with that result and a .500 exhibition record. Strongish game for Taijuan Walker and a two-run double for Alonso.

I never got the Wrigley field basket. Is it for keeping fans from falling onto the field?

Stroman and Syndergaard are also part of a gang tied at 79th there, but I guess it's a floor, because Stephen Tarpley, Jordan Yamamoto, and Robert Gsellman are there too. Look, Eickoff!

Should I merge the MVP thread into this?

Yeah, and I care too much about the boobirds.

Remember when I signed early in December, and folks be like "Is that all?" Well, that wasn't cool. I'm Trevor May and I wasn't all. Still ahead were the Lindor trade, the McCann signing, the Stroman return, a GM search, Jared Porter's arrival, Jared Porter's dismissal, a little Taijuan action, and more dick pic references than anybody bargained for. There were, like, four different GMs this offseason, so if I work out, who knows whose ledger it should be scored on. But I am what I am — nobody's savior, but another reinforcement in the bullpen to serve as a hedge against any Edwin Diaz meltdownage. And hopefully, along with Jeurys, Dellin, and Miguel, Diaz is going to find plenty of support. Because kids, I don't think Wilmer Font is coming back. Come on, take me for a spin. I think both those predictions would be lovely to see come to fruition. I just hope, if he does it while pulling down a $30 millionish salary, it won't be framed as a shortfall.

Indeed it would be lovely if were that simple, especially with the likelihood that he'll be neither, and whatever he is will be gleaned through a filter. The filter is the main thing we can control. But the attitude toward Foster, Beltran, Piazza, McReynolds, Hebner, and others has tended to be purty counterproducive.

It's been a while since I've seen that much Kelvin Chapman content. I don't know how much of this is my being in tune to latter-day speed and movement, but Reuschel sure looks hittable (which of course he certainly was that day).

That would be kind of be awesome. You've got to find a place on the post-season roster for a guy with a September like that.

I'm sure it will decompose sooner or later.

=bmfc1 post_id=58858 time=1617022056 user_id=73] This definitely should happen and if Manfred doesn't somehow figure this out in his tiny brain then Tony Clark has to clearly and slowly tell him that unless the Game is moved elsewhere then the players will not participate.

Oh, s'it!

I have a project on the mental back burner to look at each class of opening day starters and figure out who was history's best — who was the best class at that moment and which class would ultimately achieve the most in their careers?

Going under the radar of recent late spring transactions is the Mets signing amateur pitcher Colby Morris. Colby is about as dark a horse as you're going to find. He's a rare player signing a pro-contract out of a Division III school (Middlebury College) and out of the Northeast (Vermont). Add in that he got noticed in a year that lacked a season for him to play in and got signed in a year following the drastic trimming back of the minor leagues, and he's El Caballo Oscuro. He was able to scrounge up some competition in the stripped down indy leagues the last year and a half and keep his career going until the Mets came noticing. He's got a swinging head of hair and a big ol' dimple and you just know that if it was back in the day, he'd be showing up for practice in a jacked-up Chevy Nova with a Foghat 8-track blasting. [fimg=600]https://athletics.middlebury.edu/images/2021/3/3/ColbyMorrisMets_71.jpg[/fimg] Also joining the Mets in recent days has been former Oriole catching prospect Martin Cervenka, who had reached as high as AAA with Baltimore. He is of no known relation to Hunter Cervenka other than having been recently been employed by the Orioles. He also is no known to be related to wacky rock legend Exene Cervenka. But he is Czech-born and he would be the first such animal, if he makes the Mets. He'd in fact be something like the last also, as he was actually born in then-Czechoslovakia — still recently liberated from half a century of Soviet domination — about five months before the country ceased to be, splitting into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They drive on the right side of the road there, so it's all good. [fimg=600]https://static.wbsc.org/assets/cms/2851c791-fdf9-860b-f5cb-99a511aec233.jpg[/fimg]
