  1. "Coach Jackson, Michael Jordan was hitting everything for three quarters. Why did you pull him for Dennis Hopson at the start of the fourth quarter?" "Well, we didn't want Michael to have too many ups."
  2. After the game, Luis said that he had 6 "ups" which means that it's about the number of innings pitched and not the number of pitches. WTF? This quote is my lede if I'm writing about the game. WtF are "ups" and when did this standard arrive?
  3. =Centerfield post_id=59689 time=1617707647 user_id=65] Our ace was getting squeezed. Their guy was getting 3-4 inches off the plate on both sides. The first time it happens you bark a little. If it keeps happening you get yourself thrown out. Maybe it does little to change the result, but if the ump is going to squeeze you at least let him know you're not happy.
  4. Every fucking out you get out of your starting pitcher is a victory in a war. Every out you elect not to get out of him while he's still getting it done, is a surrender in that same war. But I just can't make it about Luis because the bad logic is viral. Everybody's got it. I have little reason to believe Sandy doesn't have it too. He's as smart as you can hope a GM can be, but philosophical assumptions and bad logic can create a huge blind spot for even the smartest dudes.
  5. I've seen managers box themselves in with that logic before. The pitch count governs when he pulls the pitcher ... and if the pitcher keeps the pitch count down, the innings govern it. It's maddening, but yeah, the philosophy does seem to change mid-game. I once saw saw Bud Black pull Greg Maddux with a shutout in the eighth and he had only thrown 68 pitches. The guy was 42 years old. There was nothing to save him for. I looked up Maddux after the game and it turned out that he had been lifted after six two games earlier ... with an intact no-hitter going. Can anybody even present any data showing that this is actually saving arms?
  6. I get the idea that it was about 80% of the reasoning. It was just reasoning with 8% validity.
  7. I can't begin to justify the pull, but it seems like I watch every Mets manager like Matthew Broderick watched Joshua, urging him to learn faster to keep the world from blowing up. And as the World Series showed, it's not just Mets managers.
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: I thought that muff was at least as much on McCann as on Luis, if not more. Agreed and agreed, though Luis' mistake was throwing it across the runner, from inside the baseline to outside. But committing to your stretch too early is why I was a lousy firstbaseman. McCann isn't a firstbaseman, but he should've had that.
  9. Frayed Knot stole my IGT. I'm just saying.
  10. Terrific! I thought Conforto would get to second, but ... .
  11. Let's get a 2020 baseball in there.

  13. Luis blew the double switch?
  14. I mean, I know that I watched the World Series. And no, Familia and Diaz not being involved does not surprise me. I don't care if you have Elckersley, Rivera, and Eckersley lined up to pitch the last three innings. Managing for the save is cuckoo.
  15. This is a bad way to play to baseball.

  17. deGrom is eligible to re-enter the game, right?
  18. Is his number a reference to his height?

  20. deGrom is turning into one of those collectible action figures that are too valuable to remove from their packaging to play with.
