Can we speak about the other side of replica helmets? The four points which held the adjustable straps in place were of such a firmness and concentration of leather-colored plastic, that if anything should, by chance, ricochet off your head, it not only failed to absorb the impact, but instead painfully concentrated it at a shocking level This of course, didn't keep them from becoming a prized possession which could make any stupid kid the envy of the playground. But God help you when you wore it in a stickball game and the tennis ball came veering off at your head. -
Hi, I'm Robert Gsellman, and I know you've been through prediction threads covering hard-to-predict fringe camp invitees, but my veteran status puts me north of the bubble right now. I am pretty likely to break north with the team. But the bubble is within range. I can see the bubble. I can smell the bubble. And that's because, after a year of questionable productivity, I spent another year returning from surgery, and then I was pretty surprised to see myself deployed as a starter. And that didn't work out. So it's been quite a while since I was good, but I'm still here and Steven Matz is all gone, all gone, all gone ... . So that counts for something, right? I'm an athletic righthander, and I probably play some good basketball. My long straight hockey hair puts folks in mind of Crash Davis' warning about being a character before you make it in the show. I've kind of made it, and so I'm only kind of a character. My fellow emergency-starter-turned-season savior-turned-reliever-turned-emergency starter-again Seth Lugo is down, and I'm up, so this may be a time for Robert Gsellman, captain of Gondor, to show his quality. Will there be quality to show? I've got to know. So tell me, before I make another Springsteen or Tollkein reference.

Sometimes, like our own Albert Almora, Jr., you wear the Jr. even if your father has no fame at all. Melvin Upton, Jr. too. It just seems notable to see it done so late in the game, after over five decades in a major league uniform.
-
Astros manager Dusty Baker is now identifying himself as "BAKER JR." on the back of his jersey. He came out of the dugout to examine a player who had been hit by a pitch, and I thought a son of his had joined his coaching staff.
-
You tend to take for granted the multiple angles you get during a regular season game. And then you see a highlight from a spring training game or a minor league game, and you're thinking, "Is that all I'm gonna see?"
-
Triple-play Mets are rallying in the eighth and a three-run shot by Albert Almora, Jr. has pulled within 5-4.
-
Got no video, but it looks like the Mets have turned a triple play in this one.
-
Today's version of the Mets features Joey Lucchesi getting touched for the first time this spring. Down 4-1 after six innings.
-
I'll lead with the A-listers going forward. Although Dairy Barnes is TOTALLY https://nypost.com/2021/03/18/jacob-barnes-starting-to-gain-success-in-mets-bullpen/going to make this team.
-
Jacob Barnes matters!

Hey, now you're messing with the Irish. The O'Malley clan is descended from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_of_Umhaillthe kings of Umhaill. And while, as kingdoms go, Umhaill was on the small side, comprising about 1/5 of County Mayo, it's more of a kingdom than I've got.

Is that a request to curb them? Because I think J.T is #26 of a scheduled 77.
-
Is it a hard G, like Greg Ginn? Or a soft G, like "I got three wishes from a magical ginn??
-
I'm J.T. Ginn, and you may think you have met me earlier in this series, but that was Matt Allen. See, I was a first round pick for the Dodgers out of high school back in 2018. But I decided, fuck the Dodgers, and went off to make a name for myself in the SEC. The start to my career at Mississippi State was dominant. I was like Jan Vermeer in a Kindergarten art class. It was stupid. And I was only a freshman pitching against some of the best competition in the NCAA. And that's what you want, if you're a first-round pick who goes to college, you sure as hell want to be upgrading your already high draft position, when even moving up one or two slots can mean big $$. But then ping-creek-pop! And something blows in my elbow, and WHY DIDN'T I TAKE THAT DODGER MONEY?!?! KILL MY AGENT!! But I had the tomato juice surgery, returned, and while my return to draft status was ignored in the 2020 first round, some teams remembered just how high they had me on their cards two years earlier, and began maneuvering to get me. To buy low. This shall henceforth be known as the Matt Allen strategy, because this is what the Mets did a few years earlier, grabbed a surgically damaged star, hoping to see a rebound, and offering over-slot money that they would slush out of the pockets of later picks. Like with other high pixx, the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season led to me getting invited to a big league camp before even making a professional debut. Unlike most of those others, I didn't get into a game, but I did get to work out alongside fellow Tommy Johnian Noah Syndergaard, and that's kind of cool, and I got to show my quality to the powers that be. But now the rubber hits the road. What rubber? What road? How hard will it be? Will there be music and women and candy bars in my future? Will a section of the second deck at Citi Field dress as flowers on the day of my starts and call themselves the Ginn Blossoms? These things are unknown, but they are not unknowable. That is why I call on you. Meantime, watch my sinker absolutely tear the pants off of Florida hitters.

Like with Rookie of the year, they didn't really factor work volume into CYA voting back then, so Sutcliffe not showing up in the National League until the middle of June wasn't really held against him. He was terrific, and carried the Cubs to the title down the stretch, but he was probably the fourth best pitcher in the league that year, and the second best on the Chicago roster. -

=G-Fafif post_id=58311 time=1616419321 user_id=55] "Why are you screening this in Manhattan, where anybody who gives two shits about big-time college football is clearly a pod person??” I'm not an enormous college football fan, likely a symptom of being a New Yorker. When I got into it to degree, I decided I loved The U (Miami) and detested Notre Dame. But the ONE movie for which I will drop everything when I find it's on and obsess over is Rudy. He showed them. -
Copying and pasting is a tough life.

=G-Fafif post_id=58308 time=1616418775 user_id=55] Nathan's in Oceanside was Mecca. It had everything. A game room that was a veritable arcade. Gumball machines that dispensed untold treasures, particularly these gelatinous humpty dumpty type figures WITH HATS. Indoor picnic benches and tables. Rides, including a merry go round. A private room, with stained glass windows, for use by fraternal organizations who perhaps gathered to watch Met highlight films. Tuesday nights attracted motorcyclists from everywhere. And the menu went on forever. Shrimp boats (my sister and I saved the boats and convert them to vessels for the hatted humpties). Pizza. Chow mein on a bun. Frog's legs. Fried chicken. Schaefer. And that was before the burgers and franks and signature French fries. Jesus, it's stirring to think about. Nothing on the menu was expensive. All of it was listed so you could learn math: 94 cents + 6 cents sales tax, total $1. Classic Nathan's of Oceanside lasted until about 1977. Scaled-down Nathan's, which was fine until you got misty-eyed for the original, hung in for a long time thereafter, with a lesser menu and a lesser game room and still the motorcycle crowd. No plastic Mets batting helmets, however. Mine, too, didn't withstand horseplay, but our announcers always warned us they shouldn't be considered protective against live pitching. A Nathan's currently resides up Long Beach Rd. from the previous site. Needless to say, it ain't what it used to be. -
Good morning. I'm Riley Gilliam. I'm a minor league strikeout machine who has gotten somewhat surprising invites to camp two years in a row now, and I was almost as surprisingly quickly dispatched to minor league camp with the first cuts both times. If you want to get a look at me, get a look at me, you know? I had a strong finish to my career in the ACC and was considered close to the majors when the Mets took me in the fifth round in 2018. I've struck out a bushel of dudes in the start to my minor league journey, but close-to-the-majors doesn't quite mean the same thing when they shut down baseball. The knock on me is my size. But at 5-10, my fastball is a little bit sneaky fast, but I also got one of those Neil Allen hard, fast, curves that you pick up like a fastball before it drops. Compact frame, compact game. That's what Daddy always said when I's back at Kennesaw Mountain High School. That was the attitude that had me on the fast track, but while I've killed it in the middle level minors, I've frankly bitten the big one in the brief stops I've had at Binghamton (4.34 ERA in 18 2/3 innings) and Syracuse (13.50 ERA in 9 1/3 innings). Even if there had been an actual minor league season, the Mets still might have pumped the breaks a little. But I'm still prodigiously whiffing guys, and I'm still cultivating my big-league-bullpen-ready wispy cheesy mustache. Will that mustache be deployed for you any time soon? Let me know asap, OK? Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Sport magazine c. 1987 ran a best/worst uniforms piece, back when you had no idea people thought about such things. I remember the Mets were panned for their “War Eagles be damned” ensemble, an Auburn University reference. At the time I was insulted because how dare anybody criticize anything about the Mets, but I thought about it and the stripes plus stripes thing did seem a bit excessive. Still love ‘em for the reasons Phil Hecken cites in the above excerpt. They had a good run. I had that issue and have never forgiven either. I could barely understand the frame of reference which to me indicated how little perspective on New York the writer had. I thought, people here don't even care about college football I was at the premier for Rudy. I was working for J. Crew and one of the big shots in the family who ran the company was trying to make it in film. Inexplicably, the big wig chatted me up at the premier and asked what It thought. I hemmed and hawed and lied a little, though I thought any movie with Roc couldn't be all bad. He told me that he was kind of counting on this film to save his standing in the business because his last film was So I Married an Axe Murderer, and that had tanked. He really wanted my input but all I could think was, "Why are you screening this in Manhattan, where anybody who gives two shits about big-time college football is clearly a pod person?" -

If they were alive. Montañez was a two-button, two-team, one-season guy, also. Jorgy could have been, but he was a PtBNL that didn't come to the Mets for Willie until after the season. I hated that Montañez was having such a terrible season in '79 and then found his stroke mere minutes after being traded, but the Mets really won that deal handily by getting Jorgenson and Lynch, didn't they? -

The Nathan's in Oceanside in the early seventies was more of a palace than a restaurant. Visiting there, as a kid, was more event dining for me than even the Coney Island one. -
