1. I left your ass hanging in 2020. That was my right, and I'm not particularly sorry, but it's your right to be disappointed too. So I've got to be doubly effective to earn some love. I'm Marcus Stroman, and that's basically the gist of it. I'm a small package, but I'm fit, athletic, confident, and I'm a little wired. You better hope that adds up to something, and I pitch somewhere in the range of the my salary, because I'm sort of a key player this year. I'm the second best starter, and if I can pitch like it, that lengthens the staff in the right way, takes the heat off other starters, the pen, the offense ... but if I come up empty ... oh boy. I bailed last year, and I'm playing for a contract this year, so I've really put all my chips on 2021. I can't make promises. All I can say is that I've got skin in the game. I want this as much as anyone. But wanting ain't having, so if you can see six months into the future, maybe you can fill me in. In the meantime, enjoy my glove of gilt. 3. Well, there are real people living there, and so I suggested using the game as a carrot to unscrew voters.
4. It'd be interesting if Tim Anderson or David Price or somebody simply said, "You can have the game wherever you want, but I can guarantee you that nobody black is going to go if it's in Atlanta. Probably nobody brown either. And if any white guys show up to play, they're going to feel really stupid."
5. Well, the best way to make sure the salute to Aaron has some substance may be to move it to Milwaukee, where Aaron played 14 of his 23 seasons and was a key player in the hard fight for integrated housing in the city. Not that there aren't voter suppression measures on the agenda in Wisconsin, but not having yet passed, maybe the game can be used as a carrot to dissuade such legislation.
6. Among all the disappointments of the unexpected delay to the start of the 2021 season, I think we all can agree that delaying answers on the question of how good my bat is may be the most painful. I'm Dom Smith, and yeah, that's hyperbole, but my slump-resistant 2020 must've really told you something. I'm the goods. I use all fields and hit line drives as naturally as big flies. Launch angle, my butt. My ample, prosperous butt. So get checked for sleep apnea. Diagnosis and treatment might help you too turn from a sluggish, doughy, slump-prone shlub into a fully engaged, relatable, athletic hit machine! And then people will be trying to predict your upcoming baseball season. For now, predict mine! And come join me in SMITHTOWN!
7. Yeah, I don't think a fan in the world supports it, but I don't think it's going anywhere.
8. And with a profile like that, I might as well predict a John Cangelosi of a season for him. .252 / .371 / .288 // .660 in 62 games. Steals five bases.
9. Comes across as intense. Intense guys coming off the bench can be useful. Sometimes all that energy looking for an outlet allows them to hit a big extra-inning walkoff homer. Sometimes it leads to them doing something stupid like hurting someone on a high five or charging the mound over a minor slight.
10. Here's Mister and Missus rocking some appropriately sized and branded masks at https://www.afscme.org/blog/dc-37-workers-getvaccinated-at-citi-field-event?fbclid=IwAR0NrU2Z7-PYz-kseXXUFwpdUBu1z5AehH8JOi_1A9g4q3XhDkYCQ-DOWBAAFSCME's vaccination event at Citi Field. 11. Here it is. There's scarcely a flake at the start of the plate appearances, but when he hits it a few pitches later, it's really coming down, and visibility is starting to get compromised.
12. Anybody planning on taking in some Algodoneros de Unión Laguna action, Jenrry Mejia just popped up on their roster.
13. Don't blame me for opening day being cancelled. Yeah, not everybody got a turn at being predicted by today, but you can thank Edgy, who thought it was more important to inquire about what kind of season HVAC Guy at Citi is going to have. That's not on me. I'm Kevin Pillar. And if there's anything the Mets like more than trying to turn guys who were regulars in their 20s in the AL East into reserves in their 30s in the NL East, it's more specifically grabbing those guys from Boston. I mostly played in Toronna, but I was a Sock for half of last season, or what qualifies as half a season, and it was about as solid a period with the bat as I've ever had. I hope that's indicative of something, because it's not altogether clear that there is any premier centerfieldin' left in me. I mean, I'm not Gerald Williams or anything, but just because I played at Fenway doesn't make me Tris Speaker. It doesn't even make me Dom DiMaggio, but it makes me something, and I've got a highlight reel below to prove it. At least, it makes me a Met in 2021, and you get to say what kind of Met that will be.
14. I kind of sort of think a guy should get a tally on his homerun totals if he hits it out but something goes wrong on the bases. It's giving him a homerun with out a run, but as silly as that is, pitchers can get strikeouts without recording an out, and infielders can get assists if the firstbaseman drops the ball, so it's not unprecedented.
15. That's the spirit. Trevor May needs some predictions.
16. Lying wouldn't make much sense. If done right, the consequences for lying should be far beyond the consequences for telling the truth, which should just be sitting out a day or two until you've been cleared. Really, none of this makes much sense. They've delayed the start of the minor league season just so they can have some fresh-out-the-package players ready in the wings in case there is an infection. I'm sure we'll find out more, but I'm not seeing where the system broke down, and I don't want to speculate.
17. There's that ... Really, if you want to see compliance with protocols, then make it a 10-0 forfeit if you can't field a negative-testing team by first pitch.
18. It took me 'til the third-to-last paragraph.
19. Oh, yes, I meant to include that. It's not the content (though I could take issue with this being the Atlantic's mission and blah blah), so much as the baiting game.
20. There have been comments that it must be one or two of the better WSH players but why does that matter? Also, isn't this why the "taxi squad" and the alternate squad is for OR is the team so contaminated that any close contact with them is a bad idea? I'm sure there will be more to be learned. Why do I want to blame Bud Selig?
21. My cold-hearted wife writes, "Great! At least it's the Nats who are ill." Don't get on that woman's bad side.
22. Just yesterday in this space I lamented how the 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤 has drifted from thoughtful journalism to a clickbait farm in recent years. Well, they must've heard I wrote that, because today they went right for the throat with, https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2021/04/mets-are-losers/618470/The Mets Are Losers Forget the Lions or the Clippers or even the Knicks. No team in all of American sports is better at being the worst. I apologize for posting the link and inviting the clicks, but, well, cut the shit, Jeffrey Goldberg or Laurene Jobs or whoever.
23. HOLY SHITE!!! New rivalries, my ass!
24. Guess who started the new year sixth or seventh on the starting pitcher depth chart? That's me. Guess who is breaking camp as a member of the rotation? That's me, too. I'm David Peterson, lefthander, and I'm your 2017 Mets first round draft pick out of the University of Oregon. I came up last year and successfully anchored a spot in the rotation. Unfortunately, I just barely exceeded my Rookie of the Year eligibility, but I say that was time well spent, as my 6-2 record and my 3.44 ERA can attest. Yeah, I walked a few too many, but I kept the ball down and got it done anyhow. And just being in a rotation with deGrom, I expect to improve my control by osmosis. And starting off the season in the rotation is going to be a boon — A BOON, did you hear me? — to my short- and long-term prospects. I hope one of you city dwellers picked me for your dark horse, because after a long offseason of cutting wood and flying the flannel, I intend to chop my way through the National League East, lefty-style. How much chop and how much flop? This is the thread where you let me know. Until then, watch the Braves look foolish. I'll show you fools how to chop.
