  2. INEXCUSABLE with no outs!!!!!
  3. Another leadoff batter on. This is now the third inning in a row and so far the subsequent six hitters have yet to get a ball out of the infield.
  4. In the 7th inning it was K then pop-up after getting a man on. Here in the 8th they've changed things up to K then pop-up after getting a man on.
  5. Now all we need is for the team that's scored 3 runs in the last 16 innings off the worst staff in baseball to score at least twice in the next two. And this is the only team where getting the leadoff hitter on decreases the odds of scoring.

  8. In the meantime, we're getting out-hit and out-slugged by the worst hitting team in the majors, and Matz got out-pitched by a guy with an ERA near 8.00
  9. Matz also served up a first-pitch meatball HR and got himself out of the game by needing 7-1/2 innings worth of pitches just to get through 6, so much of his hosing was self-inflicted. And, look, what a surprise, get a guy into scoring position and follow that with: K - weak pop-out
  10. Chase d'Arnaud plates the Braves first run with one of those 'two-strike, cut-down swings' we were recently saying that we rarely see these days.
  11. Somebody needs to remind Loney that he's slow. And, Wow!, a Sac Fly. I didn't think we had any of those arrows in our quiver. We usually save our long fly balls for after there are already two outs.

Speaking of grounders to the groin, Ike has at last decided to go the MFY way. His first MLB AB will coincide with the removal of my WE LIKE IKE shirt from rotation. I see where Ike opted for (or was militarily assigned) pinstriped uni #24, spurning not only his NYM number of 29 (not available but only because Dustin Freaking Ackley has it so they could have thumb-wrestled for it) but also both of the numbers his father wore during his stay in the Bronx: 39 (also not available - something named Kirby Yates currently squatting on it) or #53 which is available. Ron apparently switched from 39 to 53 mid-way through his second year as a Yanqui although I don't know why. Ron/Ike Davis become the second father/son combo to play for the evil empire, the first being Yogi & Dale B. Two singles plus a walk and an RBI in 10 Yank-Me ABs for Ike so far.
  13. Braves RH Aaron Blair, 0-4, 7.59 ERA) In other words, WE'RE DOOMED!! I knew it was an 8:15 start (see the KTE update) but it only occurred to me today why: it's because FOX is carrying the U.S. Open and they want to run with that as long as there's daylight in the Pittsburgh area.
  14. This has got to qualify of one of the more odd stat trends of the year: Granderson in 1st innings: .396/.467/.830 Grandy in all other innings: .185/.285/.366 I have no idea what to make of all that except that it fits in well with his pitiful RiSP numbers [.116/.278/.186] otherwise known as 5 for 43 Now obviously hitting leadoff most of the time is a big factor in his lack of RBIs, but only a season where more than 1/3 of his hits (21 of 57) and nearly half his HRs (6 of 13) come in the first AB of the game can create the absurd stat where the runner he's driven in more than 60% of the time is himself, but that's how you get just 21 RBIs on 13 HRs. In fact he has all of 11 hits (75 ABs) this season with runner(s) on base (not just scoring position runners, ANY runner) seven of them singles.
  15. Think the Braves are going to strand these two?
  16. A three-hit inning and yet no one even reaches 3rd base much less scores. And six baserunners in the 7th & 8th but of course no runs.
  17. There we go, a rally-crushing GiDP following the rare leadoff baserunner was the only piece of shit this game was missing.
  18. So this is the Braves who score EVERY SINGLE LEADOFF WALK they got tonight and cash in EVERY SINGLE RUNNER who reaches 2nd base. What are the Mets percentages on those conditions this season, maybe 4 to 6%?
  19. That didn't take long. Nor was it unexpected.
  20. The walk was the best possible outcome I was expecting from Plawecki.
  21. And yet another mighty 2-out/RiSP at bat that almost reached 2nd base on seven hops.
  22. Nothing like a leadoff double followed by 15 straight batters making contact that acted as if hit by a wet rolled-up newspaper. Those ABs which result in shallow, lazy-ass fly-outs seem like progress. Oh yeah, and there was a walk mixed in. But at least all this isn't coming against some 21st round draft pick making his 2nd ML start or anything.

He's got more of a track record than, say, Jose Abreu or the other guy (Olivera, IIRC) did... but he's also slightly older (32 versus 29-30). So... roughly $10-14M per, for 4. I have no idea what this guy might be worth. Hopefully the Mets have an idea but there's always going to be a healthy bit of guesswork involved. - Abreu looked like a great signing for the ChiSox right out of the box, but seems less so as time goes on [OPS = 964, 850, 742] and they owe him mega-buxx thru 2019 - the Dodgers paid Olivera $62 million (including $28 up front) and then paid the entire bonus to make him go to Atlanta before getting a single ML AB. With the Braves he hit .245 w/2 HRs in 100 ABs before landing a half-season suspension.

When he took the mound in the top of the 6th, he had thrown five scoreless innings and looked to be on his way to earning between 3 and 5 Schaefer points, if not more. But things unraveled, and Matz had to settle for 1.97 points. That would have been enough to clinch the title for May, except that Noah Syndergaard had a rare relief appearance during that final game of the month, and scoreless inning earned him 0.69 points, enough to put him over the top with just a little to spare. I'm convinced that Syndergaard talked his way into that relief appearance because he knew the monthly title was on the line.
