  1. Bad news: Nats won this afternoon Good news: it was the Cubs they beat so it's closer to a wash for us Bad news: Phils jump out to a 7-0 lead in Miami Good news: The Marlins just scored 7 in the bottom of the 3rd to tie it So who wants an easy 'W'? ... yeah not so fast there Valasquez

  3. The white unis make it look like the ghost of Jacob deGrom is pitching out there.
  4. Of all the negative advance notice about Pete Alonso's defense, his biggest problem has turned out to be overaggressiveness to his right side. That's got to be at least the fourth play just in the last few weeks where he dove for a ball, which he then either muffed or deflected, that looked like it could be handled by the 2nd baseman had he let it go.
  5. I ask you, how much more white can these uniforms get? And the answer is: None. None more white
  6. This sweep was certainly meaningful for the A's who are basically in a three-way dead heat (w/TBR plus the non-winner of CLE & MIN) for the two WC slots with, as mentioned, an outside shot still at the division. However the next time that franchise wins a series that's meaningful to the Yanquis will be the first. And that goes for the Twins as well. Heck even the Rangers, who won just one game out of ten over three post-season series vs MFY in a four-year span (1996-1999) managed to finally get over that hump in the 2010 ALCS (4-2). But both Oakland & Minnesota are still waiting on that front.
  7. My radar guy is E. F. Hutton and E. F. Hutton says ...
  8. Pirates have flat-out released catcher Francisco Cervelli Cervelli hasn't played in the majors since May, but has recently started rehab starts in AAA and claims to be free of concussion symptoms. The likely landing spot is considered to be Atlanta (they're seemingly picking up everyone) as a replacement for the inured Brian McCann
  9. That's just stunning. And of course their big-deal pitching signing from last year hasn't pitched any innings this season: Ohtani Trout's just out on an island with that team.
  10. dinosaur jesus wrote: That was terrific by Alonso. Do you guys really think Davis made a great play? It looked to me like he didn't get a good read, got a little lost, and was as surprised as anyone when the ball landed in his glove. Keith and Ron think it was great, so what do I know. On replay, the fact that the glove was in the right place was a little more intentional than it seemed upon first viewing. I sure wasn't a pretty play, but it was a tough one which I thought he had about a 2% chance of snagging. By some standards, that's essentially the definition of a great play. Marlins just went ahead of Atlanta & Soroka in the top of the 7th. 2-1, Fish still batting.
  11. Like Plutko yesterday, prior to this series I had never heard of Civale either. Aaron Civale [bR/TR - 6' 2" - 215] has a bit more of a pedigree than Plutko. The just turned 24 y/o Connecticut native was a 3rd round draft pick (2016) by the Indians out of Northeastern Univ. Made his ML debut in June, this will be his 5th ML start. He went exactly six innings in each of the previous four. -- 0 Runs, 2 H, 6 K, 3 BB vs Detroit (W) -- 1 Run, 3 H, 7 K, 1 BB vs Texas (L) -- 1 Run, 4 H, 5 K, 0 BB vs Minnesota (ND) -- 3 Runs (2 ER), 8 Hits, 4 K, 2 BB vs NYY (L) Also had good numbers [sub-3.00 ERA; WHIPs near 1.00] across 13 AA and AAA games this season

And it's not like you're walking him to get to a LHB to face the lefty Hand (well, I guess they were w/Conforto but they still had to face at least one more batter) Instead they had to face the leading BA in the second half and a guy who kills LHPs
  13. Wednesday night: - Phils beat Sawx for the second night in a row. - Nats romp over Pirates - Braves, predictably, stomp on Marlins - Snakes lose to Rox - the Brewers are up on the Cardinals (5-3) but they're also in an 8th inning weather delay - and the Cubs & Giants are in the midst of a wild one. At one point it was 6-2 Cubs but currently it's 11-10 Giants, top 8th at Wrigley.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: Was there anybody you wanted up more than J.D. Davis there? Best BA in MLB since the ASB ... so, no. So the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" IW'd Alonso following the Sac Bunt (1-out/runner on 2nd) which was followed by Conforto essentially switching places with him on the non-GiDP And then seeing as how Conforto eventually scored the winning run, I'd say that their strategy of putting the winning run on base pretty much backfired on them.
  15. Dom has turned into the team's head cheerleader.
  16. Unlike Conforto, JD was smart enough to wear an undershirt as the Mets give Cleveland a (Brad) Hand job.

Are modern percentages worse as compared to previous eras? Maybe, but I have a sneaky suspicion that such a claim can't be backed up by data. It's pretty intuitive if you consider the ballooning strikeout rate. Maybe. But there are also fewer 160 lb middle infielders who had trouble getting the ball out of the infield. And, if things are really down these days, just tell me what the numbers say. Don't take it personally but I'm not taking your (meaning: announcers) word for it just because you say so.
  19. Someone who actually knows how to Sac Bunt ... must not have come up through the NYM system.
  20. This guy isn't Sam Goody, is he? If it is I was going to ask what his --- wait for it -- record is.
  21. Alsonso doesn't have a fair ball all night. Two K's and a foul pop behind home.

  23. Pitches through three innings: Plutko = 27, Stroman = 54
