  1. =bmfc1 post_id=33337 time=1584055426 user_id=73] If they want to reschedule the division games they can get rid of the interleague games. I'd be fine with that.

That would require either LOTS of DH's which neither players nor owners want or essentially ZERO off days once they get going. So we're almost certainly looking at a shortened season, the only question remains: how short? Maybe, but they made up everything in 2001. What was that? Ten days? Which they did by extending that season for a week and pushing, for the first time, the post-season into November. But these days that's the default schedule so will they go into the second/third week of November? I don't see that either.

  4. =Centerfield post_id=33178 time=1583896675 user_id=65]I don't buy MLB's excuse for excluding the media from the clubhouse. It's likely something they've wanted to do for selfish reasons for some time and are likely using this as an excuse.
  5. In a related story, both Steve Carlton and Barry Bonds issued statements asking: 'Why wasn't this fucking virus around back when I was playing?'
  6. =seawolf17 post_id=32249 time=1582511329 user_id=91] I feel like every year, when this post hits, I'm like 100% sure we already did this.
  7. =kcmets post_id=32778 time=1583351825 user_id=53] I too was just going to say how much fun it is listening to all this stuff. It's clearly something for exhibition games only ...

(amirite folks?) DVR alert: ESPN is taking some time away from NFL draft talk this week (hey, it's only seven weeks away and those fake lists aren't going to create themselves) to show a string of MLB exhibition over the last/next few days. Today the Mets & Cards are featured (1 PM EST) and what the four-letter network has been doing with these games is mic-ing up selected players for in-game comments. But we're not just talking about dugout yapping, they're eavesdropping on in-AB chatter ('I think I going to get a fastball here') going out live as the game is happening. This, depending on your P.O.V., is either a great innovation which should immediately be used in all games going forward so as to 'liven-up' the tired old game of baseball, or it's a ridiculous intrusion and a coming sign of the apocalypse.
  9. Vic Sage wrote: he is on pace for a 62-hr year by the all-star break, but then has a religious epiphany and moves to Tibet to study Buddhism with the Dalai Lama. Big hitter, the lama... Now, y'see, if you're only going to post occasionally around here, this is Rusty/September of '84 type of production off the bench.
  10. I actually did know that. Seems like a wild coincidence that two Hispanic pitchers would both carry the decidedly non-Spanish name of Johan but, as the Ivans and Vladimirs of the league could tell you, it is at least in part of nod to various Russian and other eastern European communists who were active in Caribbean countries, as are the 'Y' names which are particularly common in Cuba.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I taint sure who's voice that is. Basically any one of a number of voices, sports media talkers mainly but others as well, who spout the 'fact' that baseball used to be popular but the only people who follow it these days are Bob Costas, George Will, plus a few dozen residents of old age homes. This despite it once being a huge draw back when they were kids ... like say around 1980.
  12. 3-2 win I think Cordell took an oh-fer but that included a couple of hard line-outs.
  13. And if BOTH happen what you'd like to see is a unanimous team decision NOT to attend any subsequent White House invite. Not holding my breath on that one.
  14. It could be worse, the BoSox have (supposed) ace Chris Sale missing the early part of the season while he recovers from pneumonia (dude, the old folk's home called and they want their disease back) plus a Taiwanese pitcher who can't attend training camp because he's currently under quarantine to make sure he doesn't have coronavirus! No reports yet of either whooping cough or tuberculosis but I'll keep checking.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: Amazingly, this [crowd of 2,052] was only the team's fifth-lowest attendance that season, with two September road games at Wrigley and two exciting home stretch wins at Shea against the Pirates (#s 157 and 158 on the season) all drawing under 2,000. But, but but ... baseball was so much more popular in those days than it is now!
  16. And no Homers!!! (merely a single and two doubles)
  17. Having previously mentioned Cordell on page 1 of this thread, I'm claiming him both as my dark horse candidate and also as my personal discovery. And the fact that I had never heard of him until about 20 minutes prior to my earlier post in no way detracts from my taking the credit for any and all highlights in his career going forward.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: * Bonus Quiz: Luis Cessa, originally signed by the Mets, has been traded twice during his career, both times in 2015 and both in deals involving current NY Mets. One is fairly easy, the other not so much. The (I assume) easy one is when he went from the Mets to Detroit as the second player (along with Michael Fulmer) in the 2015 Yoenis Céspedes trade. I believe a Tigers exec at the time said they had insisted on Cessa because the equipment manager had all these C's, E's, and S's left over in the uniform room that he had purchased for Yoenis and now would never get to use. That of course was at the trade deadline in 2015. By December of that same year the Tigers flipped Cessa to the Yanx in exchange for Justin Wilson.
  19. Brodie says no damage, reassessed in a week. No, really. They found a labrum tear that they labeled as "old". I don't know how they can know that it was old since it wasn't detected until today and JD Davis had no idea he had it. It can often be deciphered whether an injury is a recent one vs one that has been there for a while.
  20. Edwin Diaz's first ST outing: 1 Inning, 2 Runs, 3 Hits
  21. So their rotation at this point is Gerrit Cole, Tanaka, and JA Happ, plus some combination of: - Jordan Montgomery: 27 y/o, LH, 6th in ROY in 2017 but just 30 IP since due to TJS - Luis Cessa*: 28, RH, 4 partial seasons as a Yanqui totaling 86 games/19 starts (none in 2019) 4.50 ERA - Jonathan Loaisiga: 25 y/o, RH, 24 ML games including 8 starts combined in 2018 + 19 - Deivi Garcia: small RHP (5' 9"/165), turns 21 in May, top-100 prospect this winter [24, 65, 92 on various lists], 12 starts at AA, 6 at AAA - Mike King: 24, RH, 2 ML IP late last year, missed much of 2019 w/arm issues And then some combination of James Paxton (if/when he gets back from back surgery), Domingo German (63 more games to go on domestic violence suspension), or the ever popular mystery man/men. * Bonus Quiz: Luis Cessa, originally signed by the Mets, has been traded twice during his career, both times in 2015 and both in deals involving current NY Mets. One is fairly easy, the other not so much.
  22. OK, one final piece of business to take care of from last season before we proceed to this next one. You know the drill: Top 30 2019 Mets ranked in order of contributions to that season. The top candidate (unlike that of the Democratic Party) looks to be a two man race, but will it be the CY winner or the Slugger? But how will the rest of the list look? And the results of this will also help to determine the Mets of the decade list. And you get to select your list from this fine set of candidates Hitters, as sorted by PA ALONSO - ROSARIO - CONFORTO - McNEIL - RAMOS FRAZIER - JD DAVIS - CANO - LAGARES - NIMMO SMITH - HECHAVARRIA - NIDO - PANIK - GOMEZ GUILLORME - BROXTON - ALTHERR - R DAVIS - d'ARNAUD RIVERA - TEJADA - LOWRIE - HAGGERTY Hurlers, by IP deGROM - SYNDERGAARD - WHEELER - MATZ - VARGAS LUGO - GSELLMAN - FAMILIA - STROMAN - DIAZ WILSON - AVILAN - FONT - GAGNON - LOCKETT BASHLOR - SEWALD - MAZZA - BRACH - FLEXEN ZAMORA - SANTIAGO - PETERSON - POUNDERS - OSWALT NOGOSEK - RHAME - O'ROURKE - HART (I already have no recall of who 'Hart' is and I just wrote down his name)
  23. And speaking of athletic guys, the one who started in RF today -- Ryan Cordell, in camp as an NRI following two partial seasons (254 ABs in total) w/the ChiSox -- looks like he's a piece of raw material. With minor lg numbers that are decent but not great [.273/.334/.458 in 2K ABs] and not exactly a high pedigree guy [11th round pick out of Liberty U by Texas in 2013] he's unlikely to have a ceiling as much more than a bench player. But he had a nice RBI-single AB today (the only one I saw anyway) and threw out a wanderer at 1st from RF. He's a 6' 4"/195 OF'er w/some CF under his belt who can run a bit [90 SB in 115 minor lg attempts] and turns 28 next month which means, if he's ever going to get a shot, this would be the time to do it. And right after I was thinking how good he was looking in this brief intro, Gary piped up with the tidbit that there's been talk within the org about how he's the type of player who could play his way onto the team with a good spring in this era of 26 man rosters.
  24. He'll lead the team in the rate of K/9 ... and also BB/9 He'll also be tall.
  25. =G-Fafif post_id=32203 time=1582405644 user_id=55] The big stories today: the Marlins' starting left fielder and the Mets' newly refurbished park... Brinson and Clover.
