  1. Mike Yaz not any bigger than was grandpa Carl = 5' 11" / 175 (acc to BB-Ref) and Mike at 5' 10" / 178 Not that such things prevented either from hitting long balls
  2. 1) The recording for shows playing on the 14th and the 15th can be set back on the 13th 2) each episode will be played again (and again and again) at various times and on various ESPN outlets and/or streaming services probably as soon as the following day 3) other showings available also (see JCL's post) even prior to the home premier 4) there are all kinds of conflicts in life and folks decide what is more important to them on a regular basis. This will be one of them.
  3. The Giants are having some rotation issues at the moment. This Long guy is another one I had to look up. Sammy Long, lefty, 26 y/o rookie, 18th round draft pick by Tampa out of Cal State Sacramento in 2016 8 ML appearances this year (and career), 4 starts, 4 in relief. Has yet to get very deep into a game. 1-1; 5.72 ERA, 28.1 IP, 26 H, 3 HR, 31 K, 10 BB, 1.27 WHIP I'd feel a bit better if he wasn't lefty or if it had turned out to be Shelly Long on the hill tonight, but you can only face who they throw at ya.

But the real story there is that we had 15 more ABs w/RiSP over the course of nine games yet couldn't convert most of them. iow, a couple of well-timed hits could have turned that 2-7 record into a more respectable 3-6 or even 4-5 (maybe 5-4 ???) ... but you already knew that didn't you? Oh wait, but it gets better! LOBs are sometimes a misleading stat as a team might hit into two quick outs but then string a series of hits together that produces a couple of runs but, unless the rally ends with a HR, will inevitably leave runners on base which is not really a bad thing here. On the flip side, loading the bases with no one out but not scoring means that three different hitters EACH left three runners on and lord knows we've seen a few of those lately. So, looking at the cumulative LOBs for the ten games (and I included the blowout loss here because even in that game we had more chances to score despite eventually losing by 10) the Mets wound up with a stunning 161 runners stranded following an AB over ten games compared to 120 for the oppo side (34% more) In only two of the ten games did we NOT have more chances to knock in runs (and just by one each time) while in several games the Mets had more than double the opportunities. Game #1: 19 cumulative LOBs for the Mets vs 15 for LAD [Lost by 1 in extras] Game #2: 17 to 12 [Lost by 1 in extras] Game #3: 26 to 19 [Lost by 10] Game #4: 19 to 8 [Lost by 2] Game #5: 11 to 5 [Lost by 1] Game #6: 20 to 21 [Won by 4 in extras] Game #7: 9 to 10 [Lost by 3] Game #8: 15 to 8 [Lost by 1] Game #9: 18 to 16 [Lost by 1] Game #10: 17 to 6 [Won by 5]
  5. Between Jake's arm, his reported running speed, and wife Janie's glove & bat, the Mets should use the Kumar Rocker slot pick next year to draft this couple's first born. I mean, yeah, it'll be a bit of a wait for it to pay off and the odds of success will be reduced somewhat if the kid is a girl ... but, hey, I think it's worth a shot!
  6. So a (non-yet complete) post-mortem on this four series/two teams stretch of games. If you take away the blowout (14-4, 1st game vs Scherzer) and, yeah, I know, you can't, but I'm doing so for purposes of this exercise: -- the Mets were outscored just 33 to 32 over the other nine games and yet went 2-7 ... a feat which should be very difficult to do and yet they seemed to do so with very little difficulty. -- worse yet is that they did this while Out-Hitting the opposition 68 to 63 (and getting 10 HBPs to just one the other way). BBs were dead even at 21 each. They trailed in HRs but even that was only 10-7 The others places where they trailed you can probably guess: in LOBs by a gaping 64 to 42, a gap which translates to over 7/game for the Mets vs 4.7/per for SF/LA combined, which of course was triggered by 12/69 w/RiSP (.174) vs a still not great 13/54 (.222) for LAD/SFG. 7. Both teams take 9-game winning streaks into this two game series. The two split a two game set earlier in the year. How the hell the Braves got Better after losing Acuna will remain a mystery except that every batter in their lineup is hitting about. 600 over the last couple weeks. The Mets lost 11 games in the standings to ATL during August: from 4 games up to 7 down. Usually making up one game per week is a tough pace to beat, the Braves have been doing about 3-1/2 per
  8. Not even a little bit of suspense.
  9. Holy Shit that wax a dumb move that worked !!!!!!
  10. Just tough enough to lose by one. K. Jansen in Friday night's game: Strike 1, FO Strike 1, GO Strike 1, Strike 2, Strike 3 An 8 pitch save
  11. Hitting against the shift only works when you Don't hit it directly to the lone fielder on the off side.
  12. It's like, all you need to do is imagine the worst outcome for any particular situation, on offense or on defense, and it magically happens!!
  13. At least we got Scherzer out of the game and are in to the LAD pen ... against whom we're probably hitless thru 5-1/2 games so far.
  14. Not even remotely disappointed at the way the inning ultimately ended because it never occurred to me that any other result was even in play.
  15. Mets manage consecutive ABs that produce a HR, 2B, HBP & BB in the only possible combination that could produce just one run.
  16. Well, Nimmo can hit Scherzer at least. And, Surprise!, the HR came with the bases empty.
  17. When did this get changed to a 4 o'clock start? My sked said 9:10 and I just now randomly turned on FS1 to see if there was a ballgame on.
  18. Could there be a more 2021 NYM loss? - lose by a run ... during this now 1-7 stretch they've lost by 1 (10 innings), 1 (10), blowout, 2, 1, 3, 1 - 1 hit w/RiSP ... and that an infielder dribbler - the lone HR (the lone XBH in fact) comes with bases empty - the two-on and bases loaded situations are what we save the strikeouts for (2nd inning, 3rd inning, twice in the 8th inning) - only six LOBsters, but many runners were on with <2 outs so successive hitters kept failing to drive the same runs in, ergo the #5 thru #8 hitters by themselves left 4, 3, 3, & 2 stranded - eight game total: 9/61 w/RiSP (.148). Stretches like that should be almost impossible to maintain and yet they manage to do so.
  19. =nymr83 post_id=75048 time=1629480293 user_id=54]McNeil should be able to play if he breaks out of the slump.
  20. Instagram WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM Yes, Bob Murphy, it really does exist.
  21. Phils lose their third straight to the DBacks
  22. You're mixing up Buehler with Bauer.
  23. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Are any of us buying into the narrative that Cohens dumb tweet was either calculated or influential? We were one bad pitch away from the very same loss we suffered 60 other times this year Calculated? In a half-assed way, maybe. But more likely just the owner venting in a way that tries to remind the fans that he's a frustrated fan too Influential? Not a bleeping chance. The team got their first hit in, what? the 5th inning and had three knocks by the end of regulation. But then their outburst in the 12th was when the 'motivation' kicked in?!? Yeah, right!
  24. =G-Fafif post_id=74968 time=1629392147 user_id=55] When I was coming to baseball awareness, Bill Freehan was the American League gold standard at catcher, the automatic choice to start All-Star Games even as the likes of Munson and Fisk rose to prominence.
  25. -- Yanx completed a three-game sweep of Boston Wed night, passing them in the standings and putting themselves into the WC slot if the playoffs were to start today (which they don't ... I looked it up). The Sawx, who had won 10 of their first 13 vs the Yanx and were perhaps the surprise of the entire AL, are now 6-14 in August and 14-18 since the ASB -- the Marlins scored six in the 9th vs the Braves ... only to lose 11-9 Earlier in the games a succession of Miami pitchers were in a contest to see who could walk in more runs. There were 12 free passes in all (plus a HBP), five with the bases loaded. Freddie Freeman managed to remain a single shy of a cycle. -- the Phils, who have the easiest schedule down the stretch of the NL contenders, took advantage of that by losing their second straight to the DBacks Remaining Philly series: ARZ, SDP, TBR, ARZ, WSN, MIA, MIL, COL, CHC, NYM, BAL, PIT, ATL, MIA (I guess the Washington Generals weren't available) Currently above .500 -- Shohei Ohtani: 8 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 8 K, 0 BB vs the Tigers last night. He's now 8-1, 2.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP Oh yeah ... and he hit his 40th HR, breaking the club record for HRs by a LHB (some guy named Reggie something) and it only went about 35 rows deep All this while TV cameras have been following Miguel Cabrera around for the last week waiting for his 500th HR. And they may be waiting for a while seeing as how he has 5 since the end of June.
