  1. Yanx score twice in top 10 via the clown car rules. But the Sawx cone back with three in bottom 10 to walk it off. A key hit , and the eventual winning run, were made by Jeter Downs, a recent BoSox draft pick named for, yes, him. Downs got his first ML hit and then scored the game-winner on a hit by Alex Verdugo.
  2. =roger_that post_id=99078 time=1657414699 user_id=128] I assume it was a good game?
  3. Edgy MD wrote: I think the accidental fallacy of Moneyball was convincing people that such understandings as the break-even point in stealing, the existence of clutch hitting, the value of defense were closed matters — something I don't think Michael Lewis or Billy Beane or Bill James would have endorsed. I think we opened up new and important questions, but some things we stopped refining, and so an old set of prejudices was largely displaced by a new set. And Bill James himself has publicly said so. He and his followers upset the status quo by questioning what had always been seen as "true". In a piece (ten years ago?) titled 'The Fog of Numbers' (IIRC), James cautioned the current wave of stats hounds not to assume that their generation has any more of a monopoly on truth than the old one did and that the new status quo deserves just as much questioning as did the old. Maybe, he opined, clutch hitting as a skill really does exist but it's merely that the evidence hasn't been found yet. To take a similar argument on a different subject, ethanol was once considered the holy grail of environmentalists while nuclear power was the ultimate evil. Since then, Al Gore admitted that the ethanol push was both a failure and a total waste of (your and my) money, while some former Greenpeace leaders have since made a 180 and now embrace nuclear as at least a piece in the fight against global warming. These flip-flops (if you want to even call them that) don't mean that you don't agree on the problem only that no one view necessarily has a monopoly on the answers. In this context it often bothers me when I hear the term "settled science" being thrown around because it tends to imply that everything there is to know on the subject is already known.
  4. Just caught up after watching via delay. And, in honor of Keith day, a couple of calls at the end of the game. behind the bag ... IT GETS BY ANDERSON!!!! ... HERE COMES NIDO AND THE METS WIN!!!
  5. The number of the book's detractors [Joe Morgan, Mike + Mad Dog, others] who never actually read it would have been amusing if it weren't so annoying.
  6. Kenny Lofton, listed at 6' 0" / 180, played basketball at U. Arizona. OK that part you probably knew as did I. What I just found out is that Kenneth Lofton Jr. played hoops at LA Tech and is currently on a G-League tryout with Memphis where he's listed at 6' 7" / 275 !! What the hell happened there?!?
  7. Edgy MD wrote: I guess we open the ninth with Guillorme pinch-hitting for Nido. It'll be Lefty on Lefty, but, yeah, that's the call I think.
  8. 2-0 to Escobar ... TAKE!!
  9. JDD hasn't HR'd since yesterday. He's due.
  10. The call will stand, Miami is now down to 8 more challenges.

  12. So will the MLB Authenticator on site need to authenticate every one of the 47 pieces of that bat which wound up scattered across the infield?
  13. Nice recap, and nice of StL to do that for us. I was going to switch over to that game but crashed instead. Not often that the visiting team can score just one run in consecutive extra innings during (hopefully the final year of) the ghost runner era and wind up coming away with a victory, particularly against the Braves who lately have been filling in holes in the roster by calling peanut vendors turned All-Stars out of the stands. Spenser Strider is their newest insta-hero recording 102 Ks in 65 innings across eight starts plus some bullpen work. Last night he K'd 12 in 6 innings. Atlanta fans -- young, old, male, female -- have taken to wearing replicas of his mustache in the stands on his game days.
  14. JDD gets a Jack-a-Bonus off of Yacabonis.
  15. Ronnie apparently hadn't heard the clip above so it was new to him as Gary related it and his immediate reaction was 'No, you gotta be a good citizen '.

  17. One over the minimum for T.W. and on an efficient pitch count even with his share of K's
  18. Small point, but Pete does those flios to the pitcher quite well. Usually on target, leads them well, minimal drama.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: Fun fact: Paul Clemons was given the home plate assignment only after a late scratch moved Angel Hernandez from behind the dish to second base. I saw Hernandez working 1B on Tuesday night and figured we were in for an HP assignment from him the next day. I quickly realized it wasn't him behind the mask but didn't see he was at 2nd and couldn't surmise what had changed or why. As a crew chief you figure that others would change for him rather than the other way around.
  20. 5th win this season after trailong in the 9th or later. Tied for most in MLB (ARZ)
  21. Lefty Specialist wrote: There's that incendiary bullpen we were looking for. And the non-incindiary bullpen we weren't looking for: 6-1/3, 0 runs, 1 hit, 2 BB, 9 K
  22. Nimmo opens (2nd inning, game 1) and, (hopefully) closes, this series with 3R HRs
  23. Edgy MD wrote: Doublenic Smith. He's had so many doubles since his return we should call him DDom Smith

  25. That wasn't fair by much. It hit foul but appeared to go over the bag.
