  1. Was there someone he was holding back?
  2. "Why is Cairo hitting for Hernandez? Did Woodward die?"Anderson hit for DeFelice (and K'd). Cairo was on deck to hit for the pitcher IF Anderson got on (presumably so he could bunt) but was recalled for Offerman when Anderson didn't get on.
  3. Anderson Hernandez would also involve a 40-man roster move and I'm not sure how much flexibility they've got there now.In addition to Ron Calloway being waived, Cameron was transfered to the 60-day DL (officially ending his season) to make room for the 2 guys added today; Hamulak & Tagatsu (Ishii was already on).
  4. ]I think it was Wally Backman, batting right handed, in a day game againstthe Expos in Jarry Park (Maybe Olympic Stadium). He pulled the ball down the left field line for a double. Nah, Backman never got a righthanded hit.
  5. Bottom 2:Floyd - 1BWright - K swinging as Floyd steals 2ndJacobs - pop out to SSDiaz - GO to 3rd

  9. ]The back page version of Going Nine in Gotham Baseball Issue 2 is going to be a column on "Where have all the larger-than-life characters of NY Baseball gone? Guys like Durocher, Stengel, Billy Martin, Reggie, Darryl, etc... As a general answer to your original question, I'm not so sure this era is all that unique or diminished.By comparing whatever's going on today with everyone from Durocher & Stengel through Darryl & Bobby V., what you're essentially saying is that there were more great characters over half-a-century in NYC than there are at this very moment. Looked at that way it's not surprising that this moment in time - or any moment for that matter - won't measure up to the examples you'll find over such a long span.Fans who try to make the argument that there used to be more great players or hard throwers, or whatever way back when have the benefit of the same bias. Remember also that NYC used to have nearly 20% of ML players (3 teams of 16) rather than the under 7% (2 of 30) they have now.
  10. Except that no one is calling Castro "colorful" or "a character" because of his actions. Martin was and, at least partly, it was for his numerous fist-fights (as a player & a manger, in bars and in dugouts), his drinking, and his general ass-holishness.One response as to 'does NY have any characters like Martin anymore?' would be; No ... and Good!
  11. I wonder if 3 different pitchers named Hernandez - Livan, Orlando & Felix - starting on the same day is some sort of record? Probably not.Felix is Seattle's heralded 19 y/o recent call-up who's going against the Yanx tonight. He's got some stoopid-good numbers over his first 5 starts; 1.75 ERA, 0.78 WHiP, .178 BA, 38/5 K/BB
  12. One thing about Wright is that the first (and occasionally correct) reaction from fans elsewhere is often to dismiss guys like him as good but partially also a product of NYC hype.In this case however, Wright actually managed to fly under the radar for not only much of his minor league career but also his first partial ML season as well as he got somewhat lost underneath a really bad Met year during which the on-again/off-again start by Reyes and the imported Matsui adjustment were more heavily watched.
  13. Hold all new entries, we have our winner for 'Subject Heading of the Week'.And just think how much worse things would be if Bradley weren't taking those mandated anger management courses.
  14. Barry Zito - 9 IP, 1R, 3H, 2BB & Bartolo Colon - 9.1, 1R, 6H, 1BBhooked up in a gem tonight.Still tied 1-1 in the 10th. F-Rod in for Colon.8-3 Mariners in the 7th.
  15. Don't think the fake cut had anything to do with Lofton's running. (btw, Seo? I think it was Jacobs as pitchers rarely act as cutoffs - they should be backing up somewhere instead). The purpose of the fake of course is to keep the batter from advancing ... which it did. Anyway, Lofton appeared to lose his gait a bit rounding 3rd but mainly just isn't as fast as he used to be - hence the lousy CF play.Gary's calls were slightly misleading at first, but you could tell pretty quickly that they weren't going out. The Castro call however had a different feel to it.
  16. Is it true that the free beer is only payable the next day and that if the winner isn't at Shea to claim it that the prize will be awarded to the first contestant you happen to see that night? That's the version I heard anyway.
  17. Seo - 1.0 (not great but he hung in)Looper - 1.0 (1-2-3 9th inn saves against the top o the order should be rewarded)Castro - 4.2 (one of the biggest hits of the year ... and a nice tag)Beltran - 2.2 (nice all around game)Padilla - 0.6 (important inning)Diaz - 0.7 (coupla hits)Heilman - 0.3 (see Seo)
  18. "I don;t think anyone around here cares, but Wiggy is 7-for-18 since the Pirates recalled him on August 23". You're right.
  19. I think Met fans should be pulling for the Nats against the Braves also (they won btw).In addition to the WC race, let's pull 1st place closer back to the pack.So in the NL:Marlins winMets beat Phils, Nats beat BravesHouston beats CincyIn the AL:Boston scores twice in the bottom of the 8th and once more in the 9th to pull out a 7-6 win vs the DevilDogs. Kazmir & Schilling were the starters and neither one distinguished themselves. The Sox have got to be a bit worried about Schilling at this point. this is no longer just back from his injury.Mariners up 5-0 on Yanx in the 2nd. Shawn Chacon turning back into a pumpkin maybe following 6 starts of sub-2.00 ERA in pinstripes?Oakland draws first blood against Anaheim and leads 1-0 in the 4th.I don't know who to root for in this one - either result helps the Yanx somewhat.Minnesota wins, Cleveland rained out.
  20. ]OMGWTFBBQ11Oh My God We Tasted Fred's Bar-B-Que ... um, at 11?
  21. Castro to Phils' reliever: 'FUCK U (x3)'
  22. Gary & Howie have been killing Cairo all year for his lack of range, all while the rest of the NYC media are so busy praising him for NOT being Matsui that they either fail to notice or choose to ignore.
  23. "In exchange for Hollandsworth, who weather permitting will be in Atlanta on Tuesday, the Braves sent right-handed Minor League pitchers Angelo Burrows and Todd Blackford to the Cubs."So now we know just what Holland's worth.
  24. "I still find it weird that people point to Victor Diaz as someone this farm system has produced." I guess is you go with the theory that he never played a ML game with any other franchise, and change 'produced' to 'nutured', then it's real easy to call him your own.
