  1. Glavine, Sanchez ... what did we do to piss off the Cabbies' union?
  2. T minus 3 hours ... and so far my goal of having Liv-an left-off my roster is still intact.
  3. I LOVE this movie. Is there anyone who doesn't? This is what i recall: Martin Balsam - jury chairman And, as I mentioned, a HS football coach John Fiedler - weasily little guy who kept changing his mind #2 - An accountant or some other clerk-type guy Lee J. Cobb - angry guy working out his grief over his dead son (businessman?) #3 - he ran a messenger company. At one point he gives his card to one of the others E.G. Marshall - intellectual guy with glasses (professional?) #4 - Stockbroker Jack Klugman - grew up in slums #5 - Not sure if his job was metioned (although the quiz I remember claims they all were) Jack Warden - obnoxious salesman; trying to get to a ballgame #7 - salesman is, I believe, correct Henry Fonda - the conscience of the jury (architect?) #8 - Architect indeed Ed Begley - racist with a cold #10? - That's Ed Begley Sr of course, don't know the occupation Robert Webber - dopey ad exec #12 - Ad exec plus there was: - the old man (retired?) who supports Fonda #9 - I assume retired is correct the immigrant watchmaker #11 - the blue-collar guy who sticks up for the old man #6 - Edward Binns was the actor. Worked as a painter or laborer of some sort. Wasn't used to making decisions.
  4. Iubitul is definitely a Maine-iac.
  5. ="Edgy DC"]How much did the Sidney Ponson era set them back? Minimum wage. He's a non-factor at this point. Reports have it that not only did the Yanx NOT guarantee Abreu's option year (2008), but that it was the Phils who paid him to waive his no-trade clause ($1.5mil). I can understand why the Phils preferred to deal him - but this shows what happens when you decide that you have to make a trade. You've always got to be prepared to walk away from a bad deal and they clearly weren't. Cashman, meanwhile, lost a potential situational reliever plus 3 guys who are in Low-A ball. I had my problems with Abreu and he's def overpaid but it's not like he's fallen so far to the point where he's an addition-by-subtraction guy.
  6. Name the only one of the lower 48 that borders only 1?
  7. I was chuckling during that whole conversation and I'm not sure which was worse; Keith getting it wrong, or Ivy League Gary saying how he always learns something new from Keith. "Hey, I'm going to teach that one to my kids" The only thing I can think of as an excuse is that St Louie - being on the east side of the state - considers those 5 states part of their immediate "territory" (Keith mentioned it because the Cards always had the players doing off-season fan tours in those states) while Kansas & Oklahoma, being on the west side and all, are kinda far away for easy trips (although it still doesn't explain dissing Iowa). Of course in the pre-expansion years, the Cards were MLB's westernmost & southernmost team and, as a result of that plus the powerful signal of KMOX radio, they had fans from Indiana to the Rocky Mts and the Dakotas on down to Texas.
  8. - Tigers continued to put a stranglehold on the ALCentral. This time they cooled off the Twins by taking 2 of 3. - Pale Hose - who got swept by those Twins earlier in the week - took 2 of 3 from the O's but were poised for a sweep until closer Jenks blew a save in Sunday's game. - On the other side of Chicago, the Cubbies took [u:eb7c4d4cfd]4 straight[/u:eb7c4d4cfd] from the Cards, helping us in two ways: 1) we don't feel as bad for losing 2 of 3 to them 2) solidifies our shot at 'best record in NL' for the year - Tampa lost 2 of 3 to Yanx and, in a bit of a coincidence (but not irony Alanis), put both Kazmir & Wigginton on the DL at the same time. - Jays lost 2 of 3 to the A's and slip 5 behind the MFY. They had Sunday's game in the bag until BJ Ryan served up a 3R walk-off to Milton Bradley. Tough day for closers. - Clemens left with a slim lead Sunday but the Astro set-up guys blew the lead and then Lidge blew the game. What a tail-spin for Lidge, the guy can't do anything right now!! - BoSox & Angels split the first two. Now Schilling is getting smacked around in the Sunday night game ... but the Sox are coming back.
  9. "Do the Braves really matter any more?" This year? - probably not for the division after this weekend, although they could still win the WC and meet up with us in the 2nd round playoff. "Actually, I think they have a potential nucleus in McAnn, DeRoche, Giles, and Franceur," Well, you spelled Giles correctly at least. "... with a sweep by the Mets at Turner, I think the Mets are pretty much over whatever Braves complex they had in the past." I never bought the "complex" thing; we simply weren't as good a team for these last number of years. "With all that said, do we continue to experience triple happiness when the Braves and Yankees lose while the Mets win? Or does a new team take Atlanta's place? Or are we consigned to having only double happiness?"] We've been through this before rookie, TH remains unchanged throughout the year or at least until one or both of the other participants is removed from a division win. Any changes for the future will be subject to review prior to next season. "Does life become less meaningful after you've slain your dragon?" Hell no!!!!
  10. It's a good thing he was moved out of NYC and into the 2-hole because there's no way he'd be putting up those kind of numbers under New York pressure and still hitting 3rd in the lineup. Oh wait ...
  11. First MFY call I hear on WFAN: 'they should re-sign Sheffield for next year anyway and platoon him & Abreu' It reminds me of when McGwire was dealt from Oaklnad to St Louis. A Yanx fan was upset that his team didn't get him even though they had Tino playing well at the time plus several DH's (Straw, Raines, prolly others). - 'But where you you play him?' asked the host - 'Well, he could be our part-time DH against lefties!'
  12. The odds of any of those guys being any other than useful parts is pretty slim. Philly's main goal here was to dump out of Abreu's salary and between Bell, Thome & now Abreu they've dumped a lot - even though, you're right, they probably would have preferred to rid themselves of Burrell. Now they need to spend that cash wisely, have some of their young pitching come through, ... and probably get a new manager. I'm assuming that the Yanx picked up the Abreu option (he had the right to veto if not) meaning they'll overpay for him the next 2+ years but he'll simply replace Sheffield and that .400+ OBA in the midst of the rest of that lineup will add a lot of offense. Lidle simply gives them a 4th/5th starter (buh-bye Sydney Ponson) for the rest of the year and then he's gone.
  13. Does he have hands of stone at every position. Was that a question? Kinda like Kaz... Was that an answer? He doesn't really hit. Oh, so you want one of those always-available slugging middle-infield backups. He's kept as a seasoned vet? Is that a question? Get someone who doesnt make every grounder look like he needs a tent over the circus... He doesn't Graffanino would have been good. Maybe we could have traded Woodward for him! Just my opinion.. Um, Yup!
  14. Pretty good actually [3-2, 2.76, 23 H in 37 IPs, 32/11 K/BB] but that shouldn't enter into any decision. Post-season numbers are usually based on such a small sample size that trying to predict something off of them is useless.
  15. Zito's not making this kind of decision easy; - he coughs up a 1st inning Salami to Troy Glaus ... and then shuts down the Jays the rest of the way for the win.
  16. Think about how stoically Delgado took that HBP even though it was eventually sent him out of the game, and then compare it to when Cliff got a similar beaning a few weeks ago and could be heard all over the stadium even though he wound up staying in the game ... and you get the idea why the the team thinks Cliff is guilty of hamming this sort of thing up a bit.
  17. ]Mets 11 - Braves 3 Tampa Bay 19 - Yankees 5 For the record, this is TH #12 on July 29th, 2006
  18. OHernandez - 5.0 Beltran - 2.6 LoDuca - 1.2 Floyd - 0.4 Chavez - 0.8
  19. This weekend is just what we needed. The Braves are steaming up the highway .. and we throw a big fuckin boulder in their way. Another win tomorrow sends 'em back the other way.
  20. I agree w/the call because it's not like Woody was camped underneath it ... but did you see the ump pointing into foul indicating that the ball came down inside the stands even though it was 2-3 ft inside?? That's just laziness caused by the blowout.
  21. ]I like today's IGT....it's quite Quite what? ]That can't be right - weren't the Nats in first place during the first part of last season? Sure, but not 200 days worth.
  22. Wow! That 'Days in 1st Place Since 1994' graphic was telling. For those who missed it: Days in Frist Place under the current division alignment showed Braves: 1,500+ Phillies: 241 Mets: 224 Marlins: less than 200 Ex/Nats: ditto Keep this run of leading wire-to-wire going and we'll catch 'em in ... oh about 2014
  23. Good, then you can check and see if all the characters actually mention their jobs.
  24. Wright early, but Beltran's coming on strong. Our Schaefer PotG give a bigger edge to Wright but I suspect that's because some vote based on personal likes & dislikes and Wright's generally more popular.
  25. Not sure that the; too many innings/too much abuse charges for Willis are accurate. IPs: '03 - 161 '04 - 197 '05 - 236 That's a nice progression that doesn't smack of forcing a young'un into too big a jump in innings; and it's that jump, rather than just # of IPs thenselves, which throws up a red flag in a lot of people's eyes. The motion's a bit funky and there's a lot of moving parts that can get out of whck from time to time but, while 236 isn't a small amount of IPs, it's hardly abuse, plus he's big & strong and 24 y/o. Those numbers alone don't bother me.
