  1. Five+ inning's worth of pitches from Tylor just to get through four. At best we're going to need four innings from the pen tonight and maybe five as this may be it for Megill. No such issue for Wheeler.
  2. I think the Mets were just batting ... but the folks in Bristol chose not to show it to us so I'm not sure how things turned out.
  3. Game to start on ESPN2 (hope you didn't set to record on ESPN) btw, it's Fan Appreciation Day at CitiField, and to show you how much they appreciate you they moved it to a night game (and, yes, I realize that the Mets didn't do this but the result is the same) Oh, and Happy Equinox day
  4. Braves may have won but the Diamondbacks finally lost to Milwaukee (it's important to keep two teams within reach). ... Annnnnd, the Padres are currently down 2-1 in the 8th vs the ChiSox (though a leadoff double to start bottom 8). So the Padres start off the 8th with double - double - passed ball - Sac Fly - HR and lead 4-2 And that's why they're the White Sox. They've now got a 1/2 inning to try and avoid loss #120
  5. Snakes up on the Brew Crew 2-0 in the 3rd in Milwaukee
  6. I was going for exact matches, but that's a good one!
  7. And the Tigers not only survive the 9th inning but go on to win it in the 10th
  8. Orioles down 4-2 to Tigers in the 9th at Camden Yards, Closer Jason Foley on for Detroit: Single, Single, Walk, 2-RBI Double (Gunnar Henderson) Game tied, 2nd & 3rd, no one out, pitching change Tigers currently one game out of final WC slot ... but that's looking kind of slippery right about now. Cedric Mullins - GO runner holds Anthony Santander - Pop Out to SS in very short LF, no tag despite a nasty collision between SS & LF Colton Cowser - FO to CF (they got their FO's in the wrong order) And they're going to the 10th
  9. Braves win ... but lose one more day to the schedule.
  10. MLB's All Constellation Team: *Orion Kerkering Leo Durocher *Hercules Burnett Steve Phoenix * Yes, that's their given first name
  11. Sounds like maybe the real estate biz isn't going so well.
  12. Suck on that score, Braves!
  13. Philly IF Defense = Real Good Philly OF Defense = Not
  14. With a three run lead, I would have given Manaea more than one batter. Zach Wheeler pitching tomorrow just adds to the Yuge-Ness of this game.

One baseball rule I've never understood is only allowing two bases for a ball that bounces over the fence. Something like fan interference is subject to umpire judgement. But a ball bouncing out of play falls under the designation of 'Grounds Rule' so it's an automatic call.
  16. Alvarez looked terrible that whole AB ... and he winds up the hero.
  17. A ROCKET off the bat of Nimmo!!
  18. Four Ks for Vientos and I'm not sure if he's even seen 15 total pitches
  19. That could have been three bases without the bounce into the stands ... that could have been Four bases.
  20. Mendoza wears a watch with a face about the size of a sundial.

The 8th hitter was more likely to be a 5' 10" / 175 middle infielder back then. Put another way, and just looking at the #8 slot to take the DH factor out: 2024 HRs from 8th slot = 437 1974 HRs from 8th slot = 123 Now there fewer teams in '74 therefore right about 20% fewer PAs so that bumps the 1974 figure to 148 which puts the HR rate this season at just under triple what it was back then.

Confession: I don't hate the DH and all that it brings as much as I thought. Obviously the DH is part of it but it's not just that. Neither guy is tall, but Seaver et al weren't seeing 5' 11" / 233 and 5' 8" / 187 with that kind of pop as the supposed two worst hitters on the team. The 8th hitter was more likely to be a 5' 10" / 175 middle infielder back then. And, yes, the DH still suxx.
  23. Braves loaded the bases w/one out in the 3rd but failed to cash in. Still 1-1, now top 4
  24. However this inning (3rd) ends up, it's going to take Suarez 60+ pitches just to get through it.
  25. Difference between 21st century baseball vs 20th century ... 1900s pitchers didn't see #8 & #9 hitters who could do that!
