  1. #16 for Abe of course. Albert Einstein?
  2. The MRI showed no damage aside from a slight "impingement", something that won't require any surgery just something he'll have to deal with. You wonder this thing (it flared up last Sept) was/will be the cause of some of his power outage seeing as how hip-turn is such a part of the power swing. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Piazza? Or we could look for someone who could ... oh I dunno, play 1st base maybe? Y'know who we could really use - and this was true both before Delgado's latest owwie and since - is old friend X Nady. 1B / Church platoon / Moises insurance / RH-PH, etc. Not sure what it would take to get him seeing as how he's a starting player in Pitt. Oddly enough bullpen is most what we have to deal right now, but I wouldn't offer Heilman, Smith probably wouldn't get it done, and there's no reason to think they'd take Schoeneweis.
  3. Never saw the original ... but I hope it asks me to buy fewer ridiculous situations and decisions by the characters than the end of this version did. I was staying at the Marriott With Jesus and John Wayne I was waiting for a chariot They were waiting for a train The sky was full of carrion "I'll take the mazuma" Said Jesus to Marion "That's the 3:10 to Yuma My ride's here..." -- Warren Zevon
  4. Noble closes with mention of two daughters, the birth of one (I'm assuming it's the one still in college) caused the long-time Met writer to actually NOT be there for Game Six '86.
  5. ]Was it this game or Game Four that Weaver got tossed from? Game four. Shag Crawford tossed him although it was a very un-Weaver-like performance. Earl was out there complaining about something before finally walking away with Crawford apparently getting in a last line of something along the lines of 'I better not see you out here again'. Weaver supposedly didn't hear what he said and followed Crawford back towards the plate to ask him for a repeat. When Shag turned around to see Earl coming back towards him he thumbed him before he could say a word.
  6. Church = concussion Anderson = bruised chest Good thing it's not April 1st ... no Beltran, no Castillo, no Delgado, no Church, no Anderson, no El Duque
  7. ... getting an MRI on his hip, apparently a flare up of the same thing that bothered him for a stretch last season -- as per NYDN's Adam Rubin on the radio. The usual statements about how 'it's just precautionary' are, of course, stamped all over the plane ticket. Also: El Duque will be ready to take the mound ... umm, whenever.

  9. He joins the list of players with long careers mostly in other cities who winds up in the "died a Met" category.
  10. It just occured to me that, together with the new stadium already in the works in Minnesota, this plan going through in Tampa would mean the end of the last two full-time domes. It also kills 2 of the final 3 artificial turf fields (Toronto pick up the white phone).
  11. It's not like benching him for the final month was going to save the Nats a lot of money if they decided to keep him. Bench time qualifies as ML service time too so it's not like starting someone else was going to keep him from qualifying for arbitration. And the notion that they'd save a bundle by taking a 470 AB OFer to arb instead of a 570 AB guy is stretching the idea pretty thin. I suspect this was mostly a case of GM Bowden reaching back to his Cincy days and remaining intrigued by the potential upside that's contained in the package of Wily Mo Pena.

  13. Regulars don't do 150 mile bus rides
  14. The whole 'Florida' thing seemed to be mostly a thumb in the eye at the ownership wannabes in Tampa. Since Miami "won the race" to host the first team in Florida they figured that the act of claiming the name of the state as theirs would somehow convey state-wide appeal on them while any subsequent team in the TB area would be forced to adopt a city name and therefore be relegated to local pip-squeak status. Miami Marlins not only sounds better and better describes the team but, as has been mentioned, has some history to it as well.
  15. Anything, I guess, to get them through the next 3 years. With their stadium financing recently approved (a few details still to come) they're expected to break ground this November for a new stadium near the site of the Orange Bowl in anticipation for it being ready in 2011. One condition for the county agreeing to foot a large portion of the tab (with the old standard; 'we'll finance it thru a tourist tax' logic) is that the team will be known as the [u:d4311538eb]Miami Marlins[/u:d4311538eb] starting that year.
  16. "{Schoeneweis} was grossly misused by Willie. He should be the situational lefty in the bullpen, not Feliciano." It looks like both SS & PF were used about the same, both in terms of innings/outing PF = 78 appearences/64 innings or .821 IP/app; SS = 70 appearences/59 IP or .843 IP/app and in terms of the batters they faced: both = 59.2% vs RHB I agree that ideally Schoeneweis should have as large a pct of batters faced as LHB as possible. But, like SMG said, it isn't always possible, particularly last season. Willie also seems determined (at least in his public pronouncements) to NOT want to declare his relievers as specialists. He'd rather have them in the mindset that they should expect to be called in any situation.
  17. ]I think the bolded sentences make sense given the context I agree. And the part about; "I'm just trying to make sure that he's committed to slowing his approach, that he's not getting too excited and jumping at the ball." -- isn't really about "changing his approach", it's about not falling into bad mechanical habits.
  18. I'd venture a guess that there are very few teams that would NOT trade their best four bullpen guys straight up for Wagner - Heilman - Feliciano, plus a healthy Sanchez. And I can live with a back-end of Schoeneweis - Wise - whoever. Fans of every team fret about their pen because all they expect out of them is perfection. But, headed into this season, ours is one of my lesser worries.
  19. I rarely read FJM so I guess their smarminess hasn't had enough repretitions to bother me. And I don't particularly care about the vote itself, I just got a kick out of the back and forth. The other news about FJM is that apparently the crew has recently "outed" their actual identities. I didn't realize that this had been a big secret (again, that lack of regular reading thing) but I guess they've been posting under psuedonyms all this time. Anyway, it turns out they're all LA-based TV writers including one who currently writes for, and occasionally appears in, 'The Office'.
  20. The war of words between "traditional" baseball writing and "stat-heads" gets a rather humorous treatment courtesy of the folks at FireJoeMorgan.com It seems that after the FJM peeps carried the flag for David Wright as 2007 NL MVP, SI.com writer (and WFAN contributor) Jon Heyman not only disagreed but made fun of their pocket protectors while saying so. The linked piece here is FJM firing back (with Heyman's words in bold). * I suddenly feel heavy seeing as how I've just turned into Sid!
  21. NYTimes: A Congressional committee has taken the first steps toward asking the Department of Justice to start a criminal investigation into whether Roger Clemens committed perjury during testimony about performance-enhancing drugs, according to three lawyers with knowledge of the matter. So Rog, how's that scorched earth strategy working out for ya so far?
  22. Barring injuries, I don't think Smith has much of a chance to make the team out of ST -- having nothing to do with this particular outing.

Gotta give Johnny Franco his due
  24. It's not going to be on the uniforms, although I'm sure it'll be all over the stadium itself. I remember after Enron went all kablooey the stadium in Houston spent weeks prying about 4 zillion of those logos off of seats, walls, gates and just about everything else in that place.
  25. seawolf17 wrote: So why pay for that when you get similar production for less money out of someone from your minor league system? Not suggesting that anyone should. And that's a large part of the problem with these guys, that they're so used to being at or near the top of the pay scale it's tough for them to mentally adjust to having to accept less. As marathon's chart shows, teams are getting smart by not giving them the big bucks. ]nor do i know if julio franco has intentionally not been predicted, or if they just haven't gotten to him yet. They're still searching for other 49 year olds to use as comps.
