  1. [MFS62}The choice of Corey Ragsdale in the 2nd round negates all the other successes of that 2001 draft and renders it a wash at best[/MFS62]
  2. Wright - 2.5 Church - 2.0 Perez - 3.0 Beltran - 2.0 Pagan - 0.5

Jays put on about a thousand runners in the first few innings but also hit into FOUR GiDPs** or their 3-0 (later 5-0) lead would have been larger. Yanx got 2 back on an ARod HR, and then got two cheesy hits to lead off the 9th to bring ARod up again as the tying run and I'm thinking that this is exactly the type of game they have a habit of winning even though they had no business even being close. Foretunately ARod, Giambi & Cano then went out 1-2-3 ** On edit: Toronto hit into FIVE DPs

  8. ="MFS62"]IIRC the field itself was changed in elevation by 10-15 feet. I don't recall which, but raising it to install better drainage seems to be logical. My recollection is that they dropped the field 3 feet or so. One thing that accomplished was that it, in effect, raised the OF wall to a reasonable height. The old one, in addition to being Little League distances in the corners, was only 3 or 4 feet high. ]And, of course, the outfield dimensions were changed to be longer down the immediate foul lines and in right field and shorter in left and center. Bringing in the fences was relatively easy since they just put up new fencing well in front of the 'shell' of the stadium which, except for the corners, was one deck in most places and didn't need the extensive reconstruction. They also moved in the fences several times; once during the remodeling, then again the year they signed Winfield, then again when they signed Jack Clark ... all, of course, while denying that they were doing it in response to just having signed another RH slugger.
  9. There's a difference between labelling Pedro a diva in the 'these ice cubes in my drink aren't cold enough' kind of vein (an image I could absolutely buy) and suggesting that he deserves to be accused of faking injuries in order to bail on games or refusing to take the ball so as to make himself look better. Up to and including his first year as a Met, Pedro started between 29 and 33 games in 10 of the previous 11 seasons (completing 45, btw, in this nobody pitches past 7 era), pitched over 200 innings in 7 of them, plus threw in the occasional emergency, short-rest, game-saving appearence in the post-season. I don't think that a rep (at least not ON field) of being some kind of responsibility-shriking diva is earned in his case. * I'm Jones-ing for Cleon !!
  10. Nothing much to do until game time except turn the page on yesterday and wait for medical news. Perez vs Andrew Miller tonight. Miller is one of the two main minor league chips who came from Detroit in the Cabrera/Willis blockbuster. OFer Cameron Maybin, currently in the minors, is the other. Picked #6 overall in the 2006 draft (and might have gone higher had smaller market clubs not been scared by $$$ demands) after a great college career as a UNC Tarheel, the 6' 6" lefty has had limited success so far in pieces of two seasons but many think it's only a matter of time until he breaks out as a top pitcher. Like many young pitchers, finding the plate has been his biggest bugaboo to date -- 49 BBs in 74 IPs

  12. Woody Williams is a Houston area native who said he would retire if he didn't make the Astros club and then specifically said he IS retired after he officially didn't make the Astros club.
  13. It's also based on the idea that, in any given year, the fans of at least 25 teams hate their closer.

  15. We had problems with VandenHurk early on when we first saw him last year. But the same pattern is already starting to emerge; he's throwing a ton of pitches and he can't get the curveball over so the bats are going to start timing the fastball and he's gonna be outta there by the 5th inning. Now we just gotta hope that Pedro didn't tire hisself out with that AB
  16. I'm not seeing this anywhere. What was the original source on this deal?
  17. It's not the attention or amount of ink that bothers me. The Yanx earned the attention by winning four times in five years and consistently being on top for over a decade. The problem is one where a media outlet has allowed themselves to enter into such a near total symbiotic relationship with a team that it purports to cover that all claims of credibility are - at best - called into question and at worst totally out the window. That the current stadium is barely 3 decads years old and not the 80+ y/o 'shrine' they're selling as is being ignored because it doesn't satisfy the mutual back-scratching relationship that both halves hope will bring up lots of profit this year.

I just don't believe it stays consistent all that long. If a team has a stable ownership, a stable front office, and a stable field manager then maybe. But ball teams are like most other corporate structures which change dirctions and philosophies with the times and their personnel. I mean was there anyone in charge in Minny who had a say in both the Viola and Santana deals?
  19. He'll probably be nothing more than a PH threat off the bench plus a once-a-week (if that) catcher so long as Russell Martin's upcoming season is anything like his previous one -- but good for him. His career would have had a sense of non-closure if he had never played again. This not only puts a nice cap on it but it gets him out of the whole Bonds, Clemens, Sosa HoF controversy by delaying his eligibility for an extra year (unless any of all of them also turn up sometime this year).

Also, trying to see a trend in how teams trades worked out over 2 or 3 decade timespans is dubious at best as usually the people making those deals have completely turned over during that time to the point where one deal has virtually nothing to do with another.
  22. I'm usually the first to caution fans against citing mainstream press outlets as being anti-[their team] and pro-[the other guys] as it always sounds just so childish. But the Daily News and the Yanx have become so inter-twined with cross-promotions in recent years; between the in-booth radio presence at each game; the in-paper contests and give-aways; to Torre and all his commercials for the NYDN; or columnists like Bondy openly wearing his bleacher bum status on his sleeve, and it all becomes too much to ignore. Simply from a journalistic/conflict of interest standpoint there's no way a paper should agree to that sort of stuff but, considering the state of newspapers these days, they probably just justify it as a survival tactic at this point.
  23. Uselss stat of the day: Joe Torre has now won all five of his managerial debuts (NYM, Atl, StL, NYY, LAD)
  24. NOTHING is a coincidence when it comes to one's ranking status. Suffice to say that you might want to take certain precautions the day you reach the Josias Manzanillo level.
  25. Considering that the pitchers spot led off the inning (Marlon's PH) and that Heilman had already warmed up earlier ya might as well bring him in. IOW, no, I had no problem with it.
