  1. Please stop bunting!
  2. Met fans, in my mind, have long been an angry bunch, a condition that's certainly been aggravated by the success of the cross-town rivals over the last decade or more (and to a lesser extent by the cross-division rivals in Georgia) added to by last year's late season collapse. At this point they (the loud minority perhaps, but a not inconsequential one) are simply looking for things to be pissed off at; examples: - Cheering Santana wildly upon his introduction and entrence ... only to boo when he has the gall not to toss a shutout in his first start - the over-the-top reaction to the short-term tribulations of the likes of Heilman (as well as virtually every closer who's ever been here) caused by a total lack of perspective as to the folly of assuming a reliever's perfection - demanding instant firings of managers & coaches for arguable and minor points of strategy. and yadda, yadda, yadda

  4. Just to flog the already deceased equine a bit more on this play; I saw a replay last night from a 'high-home' angle which showed most of the infield as that play developed and what it shows is that it appears Clark got a late break from 3rd. You don't see the runners at the point of contact, but Pagan's slide into 2nd is well ahead (maybe 15 ft) of Clark's attempted barrel-roll around the catcher and Pagan can't be that much faster than him. So if we want to hang that particular GiDP (of that day's five) on bad baserunning the screw-up looks to be that Clark didn't get a good enough jump off of 3rd and, on that kind of play, you've either got to go immediately on not go at all. So I hereby withdraw my subject heading that began this thread.
  5. Pelfrey - 4.1 Wright - 4.3 Reyes - 1.2 Beltran - 0.4

  7. We should have more runs at this point. So should Tampa for that matter as Pettitte gave up 7 hits plus several walks in the first 3 innings but the Rays somehow scored only twice.
  8. Y'know the fucked up thing though, when I hear criticism of Willie via talk radio or whatever it's just as frequently for [u:f92d5fb752]not bunting enough[/u:f92d5fb752] as for too often. In the meantime, I'd like to thank Manny Acta for IBB-ing Castillo w/2 outs and a runner on 1st. Nice when the guy [u:f92d5fb752]least able[/u:f92d5fb752] to drive in a runner from 1st base gets a free pass so we can clear the pitcher's spot before next inning. Those NYM fans who tout Acta as 'the one who got away' and the guy who should be here instead of Willie might want to think about that one.
  9. Geez, if you're gonna bunt you might as well leave Castillo up in the 2 slot. Church may have done that on his own but I don't like it either way
  10. Best contact by Reyes since about ... oh maybe August
  11. Two big ABs there, getting Zimmerman on the bags-loaded pop and then Johnson on the K
  12. Met fans don't seem to know what to think about Milledge. - they complained that he wasn't brought up quickly enough even though he was the youngest position player in the majors at the time - then they bitched, moaned and called him over-hyped when he didn't set the world on fire immediately - then complained when he was dealt away for two starting players - and are now booing the crap out of him as he returns as a opposition player Good thing we got that call at 2nd or this inning would be in bigger trouble than it already is
  13. 'twoulda been even nicer had we not handed Perez an out he wasn't able to get on his own.
  14. Ron Hodges placed 12 times in the CPF Rankings project - only Franco & Kranpool had more - but wound up in the bottom half of the year in each of them including five times in the bottom five. Such is the life of a backup catcher.
  15. The hope is that if they're going to use corporate tools and connected folks for this number flipping stuff, at least they're getting them out of the way early. Better that then; 'And now, the honor of turning over the final number in the history of Shea Stadium ... the chairman of Dunkin' Donuts, Fritz McGoggle!! ... and remember, the world runs on Dunkin'
  16. Hillary will inspire the team during tough times with stories about fighting her way out of trouble while stationed in Vietnam and how she and her friends settled disputes back in the 'hood.
  17. Turns out I'm defending Brady more than he's defending himself, fron the NYPost: "I screwed it up," Clark said after the Mets ended up stranding three runners without scoring in that inning. "My instincts told me to go, and by the time I thought better of it, it was too late." I still don't think it was a bad move.
  18. I liked it. The part about the ending 'suddenly' featuring the sherriff as main character didn't bother me as it was his narritive that started the movie and between that and his musings at the end formed a kind of set of brackets to the story and action sequences that filled the middle.
  19. btw, the worse Brady baserunning move that inning was stealing 2nd in the first place. He made it as it turned out -- but THAT was one where failing would have been inexcusable.
  20. "I do love Buttercup, though ... an all-time favorite of mine " Haven't met a female yet who doesn't like that song. I think they should try out 81 different songs in the 8th inning. Then next year they can try out 81 more.
  21. I'm not suggesting putting Pagan in mothballs. The guy whose roster spot is in jeopardy when Alou returns is most logically Clark. But not only could he probably refuse any demotion but he'd have next to no trade value. Endy, on the other hand, might fetch something if there's a team out there in need of some true ball-hawk of a CFer and I might look to move him if a match could be found. Pagan's emergence has made him more redendant than anyone.
  22. "There were no outs, so he had two chances to score on an out, which means watch the ball go through the first time." But again, if he stays the Brews likely just turn two the other way and then there aren't two chances to get him in anymore. The bottom line for me is that the probable result to staying {runner on 3rd - 2 out} is just slightly better than the downside to going and not making it {runner on 2nd - 2 outs} while the upside is much better.
  23. Keep in mind that the offense we're going ga-ga over (and rightfully so) from Pagan over an 11 game stretch is virtually identical to what Alou kept up for more than two months last year (Aug & Sept). When Alou is ready he's going to be activated and he's going to play. They'll need to find time for Pagan around that.
  24. Par of the problem was Hughes walking the ballpark (again) and not getting out of the 3rd inning (again), but Matsuzaka wasn't much better (over 115 pitches thru 5 IPs) and even when he's pitching well he takes about a minute and a half between each pitch. He's a chore to watch. Closing in on 3 hours it's top 6.
  25. I don't want to say that this is a typical Yanx/Sawx game ... but it's two hours in and there's one out in the top of the 4th!!! 7-3 Boston ... so far.
