  1. And while I'm not the biggest fan of either Luis Castillo or (especially of) the contract he signed, let's not go overboard and treat this season's small and injury-recovering sample of him as the standard of what he's been all along. In 9 full seasons to date he's [u:29b1486ba9]once[/u:29b1486ba9] hit under .290 and once got on base at less than a .360 clip (both back in 2001).
  2. I never knew what to make of Reynolds and his whole ESPN flare-up. He certainly fought it like he was an innocent man and I kind of felt bad for him thinking that *IF* he truly was blameless he was getting a royal screwing. The 'Bristol Clown College' (as NYDN's Bob Raissman calls them) had a years-long rep for running a frat-like boy's club and may have over-compensated the other way in Reynold's case as a way to show how they've changed and get out from under a contract at the same time ... who knows? That said, I really don't care who's doing pre or post game shows as I rarely watch them anyway.
  3. Santana was hustling out of the box on his first double, he just got a bit indecisive around 2nd then didn't pick up the coach until it was too late and he had lost some of his momentum. He might have made it anyway had he re-kicked it into gear but pulling the parachute was probably the better idea by that point. Didn't see whether Church was busting it from the git go - but his ball got out there in a hurry and bounced right back to the OFer.
  4. Maddux has been pitching short games (both innings & pitches) for a while now. Trevor Hoffman is looking an awful lot like toast. And it doesn't help that Sandy Eggo can't score so you figure they'll be in a lot of low-scoring, close games where a shut-down closer could be a real asset.
  5. Santana - 4.8 Sanchez - 0.6 Wagner - 0.3 Castillo - 1.4 Beltran - 1.5 Church - 1.4
  6. Bily still hitless for the season: 26 batters faced, 2 walks, 24 outs.
  7. Time for our first check-up now that each team has reached the 20 game mark (we were the last). Each team is shown with; - their pre-season projected Over/Under number - their wins over the first 20 games (games played since, if any, have been ignored) - the number of wins that would project to over a full season - and whether that team is currently tracking ahead or behind the over/under number TEAMProj O/UWins thru 20Proj thru 162TrendNYM93.51189UNDERPHIL87.51081UNDERATL84.51081UNDERWASH70.5542UNDERFLA68.51297OVERCHIC87.515113OVERMILW84.51297OVERCINC79.5865UNDERStL78.513105OVERHOUS72.5865UNDERPITT68.5865UNDERARIZ86.515122OVERLAD87.5865UNDERSD84.5973UNDERCOLO82.5973UNDERSF71.5865UNDER Y'all can check the chart above to see how your guesses are doing.

  9. AN OUTFIELD RBI ... two of 'em even!!! The streak is broken.
  10. The sleeping giant woke up. Verlander even had a good game the other day too. It also didn't take Leyland long to have enough of Cabrera's play at 3rd and he's been switched permanently to 1st base while former SS/current 1B Guillen moves to 3rd.
  11. If Jesus Colome doesn't work out the Nationals are going to try one from Column B instead.
  12. ]On my cable package the ESPN HD channel is being coopted with ESPN News HD Yeah, that's what I meant by 'blacked out' It's just that the same thing did NOT happen on Monday and I'm curious why. The rights for Monday night must differ from the Wednesday package. It can't be the teams since it's the teams playing are from same cities playing IN the same city.
  13. So tonight the Yanx & CHiSox are the ESPN game and yet that's being blacked out in the NYC area - whereas the Met-Cubs game on Monday was broadcast on both. Not sure why the difference.
  14. Extra-base hits for the season: Delgado = 4 Santana = 3
  15. [u:699c3fa99a]Seven[/u:699c3fa99a] I should go back to see how we scored our final runs on Sunday night because the streak might be even longer. On Edit: The last run scored on Sunday was via a Church bloop. That was the last Met RBI that left the infield.
  16. Now our last [u:3f288766b9]Five[/u:3f288766b9] runs are courtesy of infield grounders
  17. Our last 4 runs now over 3 consecutive games were all knocked in via infield grounders: 3 GOs plus an infield single
  18. They're probably afraid if they expand the rosters that LaRussa would start making 18 pitching changes per game.
  19. AG/DC wrote: Who? Who? Who? Who? Who? Wel you say 'Who?' now but that's a five-some any team would take for their system. - Cueto was the guy who threw a Wow! game on opening day (near no-hitter, 10 Ks). - Edison Volquez is a young hurler they got from Texas in exchange for Josh Hamilton - Homer Bailey was up there with the Yanx' Philip Hughes as top pitching prospects in baseball last year (though he took a step back) - Joey Votto is already up playing 1st base (.300+, 4 HRs) - and OFer Jay Bruce was most folks pick as the best prospect in baseball this year
  20. You each got one right; it's Gibson & Johnson Feller never got to 3K (lost 3 years to WWII) and Palmer surprisingly never came close (2,212)
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Did the Reds really expect to win much more than 9 of their first 21 games? Cincy was a popular NL Central pick 'mongst the pre-season prognosticators crowd. I suspect some were choosing them simply to be different and/or be the first on the bandwagon. But improvment was expected and they've got several young players with oddles of upside: pitchers Cueto, Volquez & Bailey; hitters Votto & Bruce, who may blossom soon (although prolly not all this year).
  22. A K-3K Kwiz: Two other 3,000 K guys - Smoltz is the 3rd - have ALL their strike-outs for one team?
  23. The simple fact is that where we used to play against 11 opponents (pre-1993) we now see [u:dee455bcb0]twenty[/u:dee455bcb0] over the course of a season and there's no way you can make that jump and maintain the number of games per/team that you might like.
  24. He did, but while serving up 7 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings it's not like he left a whole lot of margin for error.
