  1. Edgy MD wrote: > Knocked Mark Vientos off of the Opening Day roster, ... Well, no, because JDM wasn't on the opening day roster either. He started in extended ST and didn't appear in an ML game until the tail end of April (26th). Vientos made his season debut the very next day but only for three games until he was called up for good three weeks later (5/15). Martinez was far behind the big three of everyday players [Alonso, Lindor, Nimmo] in PAs for the season but did wind up fourth on the club (495) just slightly ahead of McNeill (472 - the late injury did him in), Vientos (454 - those missing three weeks), Bader (437 - never really a full time gig).
  2. Odd that he signs much quicker this year than he did last winter considering the rough end to his '24 season. I'm sure it's for considerably less money. Memories as a NYM: - signed late, then got off to a slow start due to injuries and a rushed spring training - then had a terrific middle third or so of the season where he was a big key in the June-July resurgence that put them back in the thick of things - then, just when you got to thinking that his cerebral approach and meticulous preparation would make his the kind of guy immune to long slumps, he hit a long slump and quickly devolved into a non-factor during the September/October sleigh ride
  3. Kay's rant and the idea that gimmicky rule changes are going to draw in young viewers in droves reeks of hopeful speculation being treated as fact. It reminds me somewhat of when some christian churches in the 1970's decided that updating the language in their prayer books and such was the key to drawing in the younger crowd only to find out that it did nothing of the sort and instead turned off some of those who were already attending and liked the services just as they were.
  4. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=180155 time=1733264092 user_id=119] I was just a kid when the DH was introduced, and I don't remember the announcement or the buildup. Wonder how people responded then.
  5. The move MLB really needs to make in order to increase star power is to have Ohtani pitch to himself. It'll be the greatest Mano-a-mano sporting event since the time that Rocky fought Rambo.
  6. Just scanning the MLB.com page: Nov 16: Blue Jays, Red Sox, Mets have met with Soto Nov 18: Yanx meet with Soto (report) Nov 18: Dodgers expected to meet with Soto this week Nov 18: Cohen to best any Soto offer by $50 million (report) Nov 19: Phillies plan to meet with Soto (report) Nov 20: Soto has "good meeting" with Yanx Nov 26: Five teams submit offer to Soto (source) Nov 26: Red So 'stepping up efforts' to sign Soto (report) Nov 26: Soto's decision coming before the winter meetings? Nov 27: Yanx increase offer to Soto Nov 30: Mets and Red Sox appear to be most likely landing spots for Soto (report) Dec 2: Will Blue Jays be the top bidder on Soto? Have fun with all of that.
  7. I think the only feedback Manfred is looking for is of the top-down variety.
  8. The rationale was that it was fulfillment of a promise that Joan Payson (or someone connected to her) made to Willie when the Mets acquired him. She was part of the NY Giants family prior to the NYM existence and Willie was long said to be her favorite athlete (at least of the two-legged variety as the Paysons were longtime horse folk, y'know, the sport of kings and all that) and the honor is as much what Willie meant to baseball in NYC as anything. Does that mean it Had To be done a half century later when Willie was basically one foot in the grave? Probably not. But I guess an insider with specific knowledge of what was said and by whom might have a different view.
  9. This went out over a Twitter/X account. Presumably anyone following Scott on that platform would know who he is and what he does and those are the folks he's speaking to. The only ambiguity is that it's being relayed here second hand and being read by those who don't necessarily know about him.
  10. They need to send this idea to the golden showers. iow, it'll probably be implemented by next season with the justification that fan reaction was "overwhelmingly positive".
  11. The next guy inducted into the NYM HoF is probably going to see it as an insult.
  12. =stevejrogers post_id=180051 time=1733178798 user_id=57] Scuttlebut on socials seems to be suggesting #5 will be officially retired in David Wright's honor on Saturday July 19th before the game vs the Cincinnati Reds.
  13. I suspect major league players have a better shot at pulling rank and saying 'I ain't playin' in an outdoor stadium in that fuckin' heat!' than do minor league players. Not that Sacramento isn't capable of running off impressive stretches of triple digits summer days (and nights) themselves.
  14. Vinny Nittoli lives on the road His last ML game was some months ago Maybe he'll hook on, maybe he won't ... Cherchez la Fame
  15. Lefty Specialist wrote: One of the greatest things Vin Scully ever did was not talk. When the Mets scored the run on Buckner's error in Game 6, he didn't say a word for more than three minutes, letting the insane celebration do the talking for him. Every announcer employed today [CROSSOUT]Smoltz[/CROSSOUT] would have stomped all over that moment. Fixed it for you. The great, and recently retired, hockey announcer Mike Emerick was also a proponent of letting silence speak. One time, following a sustained stretch of end to end action, a whistle finally blew for something and there was a break while lines changed and whatnot. Only when the puck was about to be dropped did Emerick chime in with: 'The preceding 45 seconds of silence was brought to you by those needing to catch their breaths'
  16. Brandon Crawford, 38 in January, pulls the curtain down following 14 seasons, all but the last one in San Fran. Probably would have been better to go out as a lifetime SFG as the 80 PAs and .169 BA he accumulated this past season in St Loo hardly justified the effort. But he goes out with two world championships, three ASG appearances, three Gold Gloves, one Silver Slugger, plus 4th & 12th place MVP finishes ('21 & '16)
  17. Of course that amount would be higher if the Mets had Won the NLDS and higher still for the WS winner. The player's share is also split up more than it used to be; the total pie is bigger on account of the extra rounds, but so are the number of teams splitting it. Further diluting things is that the number of players/coaches splitting one team's take didn't used to be anywhere near 68. So the total kitty is a big number but then you get to each player getting 1/68th of 12% of the total. But, yeah, playoff loot means a lot more to the marginal players than it does to the stars. Rickey Henderson was famous for chiding his team mates into voting full shares for every player no matter how brief their time on the club on the basis that the difference between a full share and 1/4 share could be life-changing for some of them.
  18. =Gwreck post_id=179775 time=1732660393 user_id=56] *Made up of 60% of the gate receipts for all “guaranteed” playoff games (first 2 games of each WC series, first 3 of each DS, first 4 of each LCS and WS).
  19. I'd certainly question the part about the Mets being "the only serious offer". There may even be different offers, but I can't even fathom what a 'non serious' offer would be at this stage of the process. 'Hey buddy, that Tesla you bought a year ago ... I'll give you two grand for it, take it or leave it'
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The third round will begin in January, after the Tabloid Cover Derby takes its holiday break. You're talking about the St. Olaf's Day holiday, right?
  21. Consider also that 'Favorite' in a four or five or six horse race means that you're the pick over each of the other clubs but not over all the other clubs combined. It just might men that, in a five way contest, the odds might put you at 30-35% as opposed to at 20% which is where each side would be if there were no favorite. iow, you can be tabbed as the favorite but still stand a better than even chance of losing out in the end.
  22. The Yanx also like to project the idea that they have a hard spending limit, it helps them promote the image that they're a gritty, underdog club. And while I believe that the revenue sharing era has made them more cost conscious, at least some of this is likely a smoke screen. They did, after all, match the SFG offer for Judge at the last minute just as they did the BoSox offer for Bernie all those years ago. So, yeah, the Hal era is different from the George era ... but only in degrees.
  23. Paul Skenes (PIT) and Luis Gil (NYY) are this season's RoY's Skenes and Padre OF Jackson Merrill split all the top votes in the NL (23 1st/7 2nd for Skenes; 7/23 for Merrill) Brewer OF Jackson Churio (26) and Cub pitcher Shoto Imanaga (4) took all the third place votes Much closer in the AL Gil, who had a much better 1st half than 2nd, edged out Colton Cowser (BAL) 106 points to 101 Yanqui catcher Austin Wells was 3rd Chris Sale (ATL) and Tarik Skubal (DET) are your CY winners. Skubal was unanimous, Sale got 26 of 30 votes Second place in each league went to Seth Lugo and Zack Wheeler ... Ouch! NL ROY Paul Skenes finished 3rd Sean Manaea grabbed one fifth place nod for a point and a tie for 11th place MVP results are due out in about an hour
  24. Among this year's Free Agents, only Cincy/RHP Nick Martinez accepts the offered QO ($21.05m) Declining are: Willy Adames, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, Teoscar Hernandez, Sean Manaea, Nick Pavetta. Anthony Santander, Luis Severino, Juan Soto
  25. And on the AL side of the ledger, Cleveland's Stephen Vogt becomes the fastest to go from active player to manager of the year. Joe Girardi had previously been the quickest from active player to MoY. Vogt's last game as a player was 10/5/22 (he HR'd in his last AB)
