    Made a quick check on Mariano Rivera's stats for this season as they pertained to this same set of guidelines: ie. 1 innning, no baserunners, etc. Remember that the overall stats for MLB was approximately 82%/32% (pct of games saved/"perfect" inning saves) At age 40 Rivera is at 96%/56% [23 Sv Opps, 22 saved, 13 clean innings]

    For those of you who are normally given to voting in this project, try not to get too far behind just because Ben isn't here holding deadlines over our collective heads. Much easier to keep up with this stuff while it's still semi-current and (mainly because I just got caught up myself) all the recent games from both the Astros & Pirates series are either on page 1 or the very beginning of page 2.

    And Oakland was such a ridiculously heavy favorite that year that whoever bet the Reds to not just win the WS but sweep probably made a fortune ... except that I doubt anyone actually did. At least half of Lou's losing seasons came while in TB The other high/low point of his career is probably the 2001 Mariners. 116 wins and then barely competitive in the playoffs

    I thought of pinch-running for Ike before he even got on. Other than that, Carter had a very nice AB but got unlucky. Thole tried to do the same (go to LF with the hard stuff and be ready to yank something slower) but got screwed by McClellan. It was nice of Pitt mgr Russell to pull his 8th inning guy Meek who was humming along for the designated closer who wasn't - lest we think it's only Jerry who does such things. But none of that matters when you score the first batter of the game and then never again. I've seen that movie already and I know the ending by heart.

    Mets get their second cheapie of the year. Rain held off just in time. - Could be worse, KC & ChiSox got rained out Friday night and are playing a DH tonight ... starting at 6PM local time?!?! How nutty is that? Was something going on at 4 that prevented them from using the stadium? And worse yet, their in the 11th inning in game 1. Game 2 probably doesn't start until at least 9. - Phils just lost to Nats - Cool Hand Luke is just coming on TCM

    Well, I think he's making a safe assumption that a thumb ligament injury isn't going to be career ending. As far as the contract, he's opining on the seriousness (or not) of the assault and the fact that misdemeanors don't usually scuttle contracts.

    On the flip side of the equation ... Our pitching line with bases loaded is .291/.327/.528 -- as compared to their overall of .260/.328/.392 Or, in 150 PAs (127 ABs) they've coughed up 25 singles, 3 2Bs & 9 GS. Also 12 BBs, 2 HBPs, and 9 Sac Flies If NYM pitchers pitched to their "normal" rate, the results would be more like 24 singles (-1), 7 2Bs (+4), 1 3B (+1), 3 GS (-6), 13 BBs (+1), 27 Ks (-5), 1 HBP (-1) Obviously the high level of Grand Slams are the biggest problem as basically the expected 2Bs & 3Bs are becoming HRs - something that alone is probably worth 10 runs or more. So just by getting 'expected' results out of our bases-loaded situations alone (both ways) we'd maybe be 3 to 5 games higher in the standings.

    Jack Furlong - sports legal guy - on Richard Neer's radio program this morning: [as close to word for word as I can remember] -- "Nothing I've heard leads me to think that there's any chance the Mets can negate the contract" ... "If this is not Francisco Rodriguez this is a summons in front of the lowest-level judge and 6 months probation" ... "this is the equivalent of a bar room fight without serious injury" He thinks they'll get away without paying him for the remainder of this season based on the injury but nothing more on contract violation.

    At this point it probably won't matter ... - but the phucking Phils won their game tonight 1-0 while getting out-hit by the Nats 10-4 Halladay for 8 + Lidge for 1 - and this afternoon the Braves won 5-3 in a game at Wrigley where they got out-hit 10-5 Cubs took a 3-2 lead into the 9th. Marmol came on and promptly walked the bases loaded. Then, with 1 out he K'd Melky Cabrera. He then went 0-2 on Ankiel before serving up a bases-clearing triple. At least the Yanx - and AJ Burnett - got their asses kicked.

    Parnell lost about 3-4 MPH off his heater on the trip from Houston. Maybe it's in baggage claim or something ... fuckin' airlines! BOOKS!!
