  1. Tonight's pre-game interview and the words you don't normally hear from jocks included; "maladies", "resolute" and "acute".
  2. Edgy DC wrote: Jeter's Statement --- "The All-Star Game is always important to me. But I have concentrate on what's most meaningful --- my professional responsiblities. And for me, that means maintaining the faade of my farcical injury. The truth is also that I'm a really awful player at this point and I don't need to underscore that fact to the world by playing in a showcase game I'm clearly --- cuh-learly --- unqualified for. OK, guys, heh-heh, the real statement is... HEY! Where's that guy going?" I was going to make a comment earlier today about Mariano pulling out of the ASG (even though not injured and just as he's seemingly done for the last number of ASGs and WBCs) was going to lead to Jeter & ARod pulling out as well with injuries that will keep them out of the game even as they don't keep them out of regular season games. But I was too slow as both pulled out of the ASG today.
  3. I like it - and it's OK with me if they stay on for the rest of the year. MVP, CY, RoY acknowledgments would be cool too if they kept them equally small and tasteful. It would be kind of MLB's version of the TdF's yellow jersey (also green, white, and polka-dot). Yanx aren't/won't wear them I'm sure because, as usual, they feel as if they're above major league baseball rather than a part of it. Doesn't much matter anyway as Rivera is suddenly too injured to participate in next week's ASG just as he's been for what seems like the 24th time in a row for ASGs, WBCs, etc., even though he's not too injured to play in actual games. Jeter and/or ARod pulling out is only a matter of time.
  4. Niese - 3.3 Parnell - 0.5 Rodriguez - 0.5 Beltran - 1.7 Tejada - 1.6 Duda - 1.0 Harris - 0.8 Turner - 0.6
  5. Billy B was one of the two players sister Jen - then about 12 y/o - referred to as 'The Mickey Mouse Twins' for their big, black, and roundish "ears" protruding from their hats. I believe Nino Espinosa was the other.
  6. Tied in the 7th last night with one out and a runner on 3rd, Davey calls for a first-pitch suicide squeeze. So lumbering down the line comes big ol' Mike Morse except that the batter - catcher Wilson Ramos - misses the sign and swings away!! Morse hangs a quick right into foul territory but fortunately, both for Morse's health and the Nats' strategy, Ramos fouled the ball straight back. But Davey wasn't about to let one failure get in the way of a good strategy, so two pitches later he puts the same play back on and Ramos/Morse pulled it off perfectly. Nats win by that one run.
  7. Lying about one's age was fairly common for a while for all the same reasons as it did for foreign born hopefuls. And then they put in the pension plan and suddenly a whole lotta guys fessed up.
  8. You may think that commercial is lame but there's an even-worse generic version - one that runs, I suppose, everywhere outside NYC area - where the voice-over is identical except that the parents are given seats 'from their beloved home-town team'. And you thought they were only trying to profit off two stadiums at once?
  9. Niese shaking his head and glaring at umps as he walks off the mound at the end of the inning. That was a two-run mistake Blue.
  10. The thing here is, that after 16 years of nothing but praise and hosannas (much of it deserved, some almost comically over-the-top), even the slightest bit of criticism - (due to the fact that he's currently like the worst hitter on his team, maybe - just maybe mind you - he should no longer get the most ABs by batting leadoff) - hits certain ears as "bashing".
  11. Pelfrey - 2.5 Bay - 3.2 Beato - 0.5 Isringhausen - 0.3 Carrasco - 0.4 Beltran - 1.5 Pagan - 1.1 Murphy - 0.5
  12. Meanwhile, if you're that guy at the casino hotel who locks himself out in his bathrobe and you have that girl in the purple dress outside your door ... would the lack of a key really prevent you from getting back in? I'd knock that fuckin' thing down my fist.
  13. Even if he gets out of this here it's like 15-20 extra pitches all on account of the HBP.
  14. PiggiesTomatoes wrote: It's about time The Big Glass of Water is pitching inside with authority. Nothing like the other team's hitters being uncomfortable at the plate. Sure, but hitting Miles (who won't take you out of the park) w/2 outs while you're ahead in the count and with Kemp sitting on deck isn't a good move. Pitching inside is great - but if you can't control it then 'Great' just left the building.
  15. Carlos didn't miss that RiSP !!
  16. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: The way both hurlers keep putting on, then stranding various crew members, we're bound for at least a three-hour tour. And (while we're on TV analogies) I think in order to hit Lilly we need a bat the size of the one Eddie carried.

  18. I trust that the show for Jim Thome's impending (5 away) 600th HR is in the works too, right?
  19. A good squeeze play is more about THAT you bunt it than WHERE. The problem with the squeeze with the bags loaded is that it makes a force-out or even DP easier (particularly if not disguised well) - or if it's the suicide variety then a missed bunt fucks the inning just the way the GiDP did. The string of few Sac Bunts by the Mets is not all good news as much of that is/was due to the pitchers failing horribly when called upon. The better news is that [u:1ik5sfpy]NYM position players[/u:1ik5sfpy] have only SB'd like 8 times this year. Under previous skippers 8 SBs was more like a series' worth.
  20. Edgy DC wrote: I heard they offered Jeter. Well they better hurry up then so he can get hit #3,000 where it most fittingly belongs* ... at CitiField. * or so I've read.
  21. Capuano - 2.3 Parnell - 0.9 Rodriguez - 0.3 Pagan - 1.7 Tejada - 1.0 Murphy - 1.0 Beltran - 1.0 Bay - 0.9 Duda - 0.9
  22. Dickey - 1.3 Beato - 1.1 Rodriguez - 1.1 Bay - 2.0 Paulino - 1.3 Duda - 1.3 Beltran - 0.7 Murphy - 1.2
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: A lot of buzz today that the Mets have offered Rodriguez to the Yankees, but that the Yankees interest is not strong. All of the reports appear to trace back to a tweet from Bob Klapsich, so a few grains of salt may be in order. The Yanx tend to like to play wait-n-see on deals like this, then convince teams as the deadline approaches that no one else will take their horribly expensive player so they have no choice but to meet the Yanx' price. Last year, for instance, they wound up getting Lance Berkman, Austin Kearns, and Kerry Wood for the stretch drive and paid very little in flesh or in money for any of them. So even if they decide they do need Rodriguez (which depends, I suppose, on the health/future of their currently absent relievers) their natural tendency to avoid speculation coupled with a desire to make deals only on their own terms means they'll probably deny interest right up to the moment they announce the acquisition.
