  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I hope he gets the chair. If we can figure out how to give a dead man the chair I'm with you.
  3. Dontrelle Willis is tonight's starter for the Reds - and was winning last time I looked - so the only way we'll see him is as a pinch-hitter. One of the reasons the Reds are leading the Braves is that Miguel Cairo hit a HR (as did Brandon Phillips). I don't think I ever saw Cairo get a ball out of the infield when he was a Met.
  4. SteveJRogers wrote: Isn't this why we have the MFYLDB thread? = Yeah sorry, I never saw that one (which is why I hate putting things in 'All-Purpose' threads - but that's another topic). On the memorabilia/collectables biz in general, I've always operated under the assumption that the majority of it was either fraudulent or consisted of pieces created specifically to form a 'buzz' and therefore a temporary bubble where the sellers could cash in before the prices collapsed under the inevitable market saturation and/or cheaper knock-offs. And the notion of a 'Certificate of Authenticity' always cracked me up. As if a question about whether an item was fake could be solved by a certificate which is even easier to fake. Not too surprising then to see that Halper invented (or claims to) the term in the first place. Halper, between his image of operating at the top end of the market, some high-rent friends, and his association with the MFYs, sounds like he was able to escape scrutiny for far longer than he ever deserved to.
  5. bmfc1 wrote: Not enough by the Marlins. Actually you could argue that their go-ahead run was created by that last bunt (and with two strikes no less).
  6. Lots of bunting in this game, huh?
  7. In today's NYTimes Sports Section was a letter-to-the-editor section with replies to Alan Schwartz's article on his kid's lost innocence after the Frankie trade. This is obviously by no means scientific and you do get the idea that some used this as an excuse to rant about things they were simply pissed off about either at the time or in retrospect. Anyway, a synopsis of the responses divided into categories more or less: Trades -- Mets deal Seaver Oilers deal Gretzky Giants deal Cepeda Dodgers deal Jackie (to the Giants no less!!) Knicks deal Clyde Met trades of Mookie / Dykstra / Mazzilli Cubs trade Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio Indians trade Rocky Colovito Yanx trade Bobby Murcer Colts trade Unitas Rangers trading Park, & Ratelle for Esposito & Vadnais (then followign that up with Middleton for Hodge) Releases/Firings -- Yanx let Damon & Matsui walk Yanx fire Showalter Yanx fire Berra Yanx fire Dick Howser Celtics let Paul Silas go Czonka, Kiick & Warfield flee the Dolphins for the WFL Business -- 94 MLB strike McCourt buying the Dodgers Dodgers/Giants moving to California Robert Irsay moving the Colts away form Baltimore in the middle of the night MLB clubs tossing aside Fay Vincent for Selig Getting priced out of Yanqui Stadium Al Davis taking the Raiders out of Oakland (despite a waiting list for tickets) Scandals -- Steroids in baseball When it bacame obvious what Pete Rose would do for a dollar Player personal lives becoming public (generic) Keckich/Peterson Dwight Gooden in rehab Vince Coleman with firecrackers and not knowing who Jackie Robinson was Having to toss aside ones framed, autographed Roger Clemens photo Assorted -- Munich 72 Mets removing the orange & blue shingles (really dude, Really?) The introduction and subsequent proliferation of over-the-top NBA player intros Leaning over the Dodger bullpen wall to see a pack of Maroboros next to Don Drysdale
  8. Where the hell is Pridie heading? If that thing DOES go into the corner you can crawl home dude.
  9. metsguyinmichigan wrote: I think he was more of a sucker than an scam artist. Really? Selling the story that he got up a Shoeless Joe uni directly from Mrs. Shoeless when it turned out to have been made of post-WWII era synthetics makes him the source of the lie not the victim.
  10. The good thing about the All-Time list with a stat like triples is that with each new one he'll catch & pass several guys at once and move up the list in multiple steps. With two more, for instance (and, hell, that could be later today), he'll not only leave behind his ties with Bowa, Rollins, Phil Cavaretta, and Jack Tobin, but also leap past Hi Myers and Dan McCann (100 each) and into a new tie for 156th place (101) with Stuffy McInnis, Cupid Childs, and Sam West. OK, I admit it, I really just put up this post so I could type out some of those names.
  11. Reyes - 1.8 Turner - 1.8 Beltran - 1.0 Wright - 1.1 Duda - 0.8 Capuano - 0.5
  12. Just in case you thought you were imagining things, you're not: Gaby Sanchez career: .279/.351/.463 Gaby Sanchez vs NYM: .394/.438/.707 and 6 of his 37 HRs
  13. Ceetar wrote: Jose Reyes now has 99 triples, which ties him with Jimmy Rollins for 3rd on the All-Time list. Next up (yeah, like Rollins is gonna keep pace?) is Johnny Damon with 104, which might also be doable this year. Crawford has 109. That would be the All-Time Active List of course. Jose just tied Larry Bowa (among others) for 161st place in the career triples race.
  14. Oh good, so we get 9 games against the Yanx & Sawx while we'll probably see the Phils & Braves double-up on the O's & Jays and some team we'll be competing against in the WC race fattens up on some AL Central squad.
  15. Barry Halper, self-proclaimed collector and king of baseball artifacts (and part NYY owner) = mostly a fraud and con-artist
  16. OK, this just got a bit more interesting.
  17. bmfc1 wrote: I wasn't asking about Corrasco's contract because of the HR, but why did he get a 2 year deal? Probably because they thought he'd go somewhere else if they didn't. Besides, it hardly matters. I can't imagine the existence of a 2nd year or the money it entails making a bit of difference as to his future on this team. And as I'm typing another fucking piece of shit infield single starts a run-scoring rally. btw, is it just my imagination or do all games with Florida move at the speed of plate tectonics?
  18. These last two Marlins ups have been like Yanqui innings: a piece of shit infield hit starts it off and then ... Le deluge! And in fairness to Carrasco, he was forced to get about 5 outs that inning.
  19. OK, I'm going to stop posting now.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Big inning for Cappy here with the leadoff hitter on with a cheapie and their big boys set to come up. Or he could screw the pooch before we even get to the meat of the order. Cappy always seems to have one of these innings around the 5th or 6th which is why, with a slim lead, I wanted him to get through this one.
  21. Big inning for Cappy here with the leadoff hitter on with a cheapie and their big boys set to come up.
  22. Isringhausen - 0.7 Wright - 2.1 Murphy - 1.8 Reyes - 1.2 Duda - 1.0 Turner - 1.0 Beltran - 1.0 Pagan - 0.7 Paulino - 0.5
  23. Niese - 1.0 Reyes - 1.2 Turner - 0.7 Duda - 1.5 Pridie - 0.7 Carrasco - 0.7
  24. Dickey - 1.8 Byrdak - 0.3 Beato - 0.3 Isringhausen - 1.2 Beltran - 1.8 Pagan - 1.8 Thole - 1.8 Duda - 1.0
