  1. And the Braves and Pirates ... are going to extras. 1-1 end of nine.
  2. I saw that his highest pitch-count inning was 16. That's often one of his lowest. He even had two single-digit pitch innings.
  3. And just as we were getting ready to toss Mike Pelfrey out with the used fish wrappers ...

  5. I like that even though the trade isn't official yet, and that Giants are starting a series in Cincinnati on Friday, Carlos has already jumped a plane to Philly so he can help his new team kick their asses tomorrow afternoon.

I had similar thoughts AdamRubinESPN Terry Collins doesn't know if Beltran will be here. "I can't use him," the manager added. Mets play with 24 tonight. I mean theoretically it would be legal to use him, but they're not going to do that and jeopardize the deal. At the same time until it's official he can't be replaced on the roster so, yeah, they're going to be a bat short today ... two if you include the fact that Bay is still here.

King Felix owns the Yanks, which is part of the reason Yankee fans drool over him. It's the Steinbrenner-era fan, becuse he was noitorious for coveting those that beat him. Translation: Felix is one of the best pitchers in baseball which means that Yanqui fans believe that makes them entitled to him for the likes of Kei Igawa (yes, he's still pitching for the Yanx in the minors) plus some other low level non-entity.

  10. Farmer Ted wrote: NYPOST. -- The Mets traded Carlos Beltran and cash to the Giants for one of the best pitching prospects in the majors, Zach Wheeler, multiple sources confirmed to The Post. Keep in mind this is the same Post that told us a few days ago (Sherman, I think) citing several factors which said that there was no way the Mets were going to get even a medium-good prospect for Beltran - even if they paid his freight. And, yeah, I realize that this is two different stories and one's a source and the other an opinion ... but still.

Nobody had a better angle than that umpire, and it's not clear as to whether the glove actually touches his leg. Yeah, I think it's one of those plays where he clearly looks out via real time speed, but the ump says he never saw the tag and so the job of replay is to see whether you can actually see glove hit leg (or wherever) in slo-mo and from every available angle. And while I agree that he should have been called out, I think the casualness of the tag negates any hard evidence that he actually was tagged and that's what's going to be needed to overturn the result. By the same token if the call had gone the other way and the rules allowed the Braves to challenge the call (as some pundits are calling for on any and every potential scoring play) then I don't believe the replay showed enough to prove he wasn't either.
  12. The other thing about this play is that it gave the national media (in their brief moments between football signing orgasms) the excuse to tee off on baseball for "continuing to live in the dark ages" by not instantly expanding replay. But since replay all comes down to the minute details in slow-motion, it's probable that this call wouldn't have been overturned anyway since you certainly couldn't prove the tag was ever made.
  13. Per Sickels: 4) Francisco Peguero, OF, Grade B-: Late start due to knee injury, hit .324/.387/.441 in 16 games for (A+) San Jose, .276/.291/.439 win 25 games for Double-A Richmond. Speed/power potential remains impressive, still raw with the strike zone. 12) Eric Surkamp, LHP, Grade C+: 2.05 ERA, 118/32 K/BB in 101 innings for (AA) Richmond, 84 hits. Excellent season in all respects, transition to Double-A very successful.
  14. And he did it!! You know it's a bad day for Cleveland when you commit five more errors than hits.
  15. A K, and now a GO, and now ...
  16. Ervin Santana no-hitting the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" heading for the 9th. Cleveland scored in the 1st inning on an error, SB, GO, and WP but no hits then or since. 3-1 Angels
  17. I'd like to find out what Brown can do for us.
  18. I'd be stunned if Bungarner is any part of this. But, only a timely basis, John Sickels was nice enough to have recently complete his mid-season review for his list of Giants prospects. The rank and grade for each are John's pre-season opinions and then he gives an update based on the half-season since he made them. 2) Gary Brown, OF, Grade B: Hitting .313/.382/.469 with 39 steals for High-A San Jose, drawing raves for speed and defense. Has a few rough edges but overall I'm impressed, and pre-season concerns I had about his bat have been eased. 3) Zack Wheeler, RHP, Grade B: 3.70 ERA with 95/46 K/BB in 83 innings for San Jose, 64 hits, 1.29 GO/AO. K/IP and H/IP remain excellent, reflect plus stuff, still needs to sharpen command. Wheeler just turned 21 in May; Brown will be 23 in September remainder of list
  19. Gwreck wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: No it won't. Exactly. And there's the problem. The umpires aren't going to get better without better accountability. The umpire's union takes the same view as a lot of unions in that they put forth the idea that there's no difference among any of their employees; each one is exactly as competent as the next and only seniority should be used for benefit and pay differences.
  20. Rasmus: Another young ballplayer that LaRussa doesn't like for no apparent reason (see Rolen, Scott)
  21. The sweep certainly fooled the Man: I saw the tag, but he looked like he old him and I called him safe for that. I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. Im guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened I didnt see a tag. I just saw the glove sweep up. I didnt see the glove hit his leg. The thing is, on a call like that where the throw beats the runner but six feet and the tag was certainly right there or maybe missed by a few millimeters you have to be damn near 100% sure he missed the tag before you call that he missed the tag. And not just because it's the 19th inning but especially because it's the 19th.

  23. Pitt tied with the Bravos in the 10th A Neal Walker error gives Atlanta a leadoff baserunner in bottom 10.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Wayne Hagin told us all about Bruce's division winning AB vs. Byrdak last year. There's that, but I think the TV guys gave a larger sample size which wasn't pretty. Either that or I'm mixing it up with something else and don't know what I'm talking about. Either way, it worked and I'M HAPPY (even though it was a sloppy, sloppy game).
  25. I know Byrdak K'd Bruce yesterday but didn't they also mention something about him being like .300 against him with several HRs prior to this season? I'm not sure I'd push your luck with this and would have stayed with Beato myself.
