  1. The proper play (for Murphy) - as Keith was saying - was to get the ball to Turner covering 1st behind the runner. That way he's trapped with no place to go except dislodge the other runners who wouldn't dare abandon their base at that point lest they make things worse.
  2. Wise pulls a Muffy, but then Muffy pulls a Muffy.
  3. At least this game we've got the home-field advantage after tying it up ... that supposed to count for something. Tied it up in the 9th yesterday and then never even got to extras.
  4. And a HR by Hairston is pretty much a foregone conclusion, no?
  5. TransMonk wrote: Lost a run there. Between Sunday's GiDPs (2), caught stealings (2 more), Murphy's base-running gaffes and other assorted hi-jinks, and now Jose being nailed at the plate, we've been getting a lot of our base-runners erased lately.
  6. Back home after a 6-4 road trip that was somewhat disappointing when you consider the competition and looking to get August off to a good start. Vazquez v Pelfrey
  7. Niese - 2.8 Hairston - 4.0 Beato - 0.2 Byrdak - 0.2 Igarashi - 0.5 Reyes - 1.0 Murphy - 0.5
  8. Dickey - 3.0 Carrasco - 0.3 Acosta - 0.2 Wright - 1.5 Bay - 0.9 Thole 1.1
  9. Craig Counsell - the soon to be 41 y/o reserve IFer for Milwaukee - went to the plate 34 times in July - he had a sac bunt - he had a sac fly - he got hit by a pitch once - and made an out the other 31 times That's right, no hits for the entire month in a streak which also includes his final 13 ABs in June for a streak that's now reached 0-for-44 He started and played complete games 8 times during that run, including the last two games (no doubt brought on by the injury to Rickie Weeks), the remaining ABs came via PH and late-game sub situations.
  10. Erik Bedard winds up on the Sawx in a three-way with the Dodgers & Mariners. Yanx apparently nothing.
  11. Yeah but he never looked at what was happening. I would have sent Niese too, but if Murph checks at what's going on in front of him he can hit the brakes a step or two earlier and get back. He never did.
  12. Let's relax. He's in a bad stretch and still has work to do but you also don't rebuild by dealing away 26 y/o relievers who throw 100mph. The problem here is that the only runs they've generated over the last 21 innings have been 2 Scott Hairston HRs.

  14. metirish wrote: Olney takes back the trade "@Buster_ESPN: The Rangers get Mike Adams for Wieland and Erlin. NOT Heath Bell. #trades" I was going to say, how many closers do the Rangers need? Between their own Feliz and now Uehara from the Orioles the addition of Bell would make for a crowded pen come late innings.
  15. metirish wrote: BTW , the Indians deal for Jimenez is some risk? Certainly some risk/reward to the whole thing. After starting 2010 at 15-1 by the ASG, he's a very pedestrian 10-16; 4.18 since. Also, reportedly the Rox were reluctant to let teams give him a physical prior to a deal. if you were to compare what the Mets gave up for Santana against what they gave up , wow. The major difference being that the Mets then had to go sign Johan at FA prices while the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" have Ubaldo for the next several seasons at very reasonable levels - assuming of course that he's even close to being decent.
  16. Holy Shit Murphy! A dumb NYM base-running play is now officially called 'pulling a Muffy' Three seasons ago it was 'a Pagan' but now it's got a new name.

Whenever this happens I usually need to stop and take a moment to remember which team he was on in the first place. And besides, I thought contenders moved to Orlando Cabrera not the other way around. I think Gary Cohen told me that a few dozen times.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: MFYs not making a move? I dunno. They always do something and it's hard to see them praying that Colon & Garcia aren't just simply going to turn back into (aging and fat) pumpkins some time in the next three months. It's also not like Hughes has looked great and, while Nova won last night, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a bit easier to pitch when staked to a 12 run lead before you even take the mound. Kuroda in LA has announced that he Will Not waive his N-T clause so apparently he's going nowhere. The Sawx pulled out of the Harden deal (not quite sure why they were in it). Orioles also deal Derrick Lee to the Pirates for some class A 1Bman
  19. Edgy DC wrote: How often does a guy get plunked twice in a game. I think Josh Thole has a new act. I'm also not sure he was actually hit either time.
  20. - Orioles deal closer Koji Uehara to the Rangers - Indians land Ubaldo Jimenez from Rox for a major package of minor leaguers - Cardinals to get Raffy Furcal from Dodgers - BoSox said to be closing in on deal for Rich Harden from Oakland, sending one-time top 1B prospect Lars Anderson plus others. Anderson made redundant by the Gonzalez trade and long-term deal.
  21. Disappointing to go out so easily to Maya in the first three innings. Even if they just made him work a little harder for those nine outs he'd have tired earlier and we could have hit the soft part of the bullpen and at least trimmed the lead before Storen threatened to shit the bed. But when we did start hitting the DPs sucked all the life out and, in the end, I guess you could say that the difference in the game was that Werth's 2-out/2-on shot went out but Reyes's fell about 10 feet short (although they really hit us better the whole game).
  22. Davey Johnson: "Hey Marquis, it's time to warm up .... the plane that's taking you to Arizona that is." Between this trade and the Hairston trade (all for minor leaguers) Nats fans better hope that there's someone close by to replace those guys. Oddly (because he was playing fairly well) OFer Roger Bernadina was the guy sent down to make room for the incoming Johnny Gomes but he can't come back until 10 days are up.
  23. ^ Nice one, although that wasn't my inspiration. Actually ... soupcan wrote: NIese, but shouldn't it be 'whom do you trust?' ... I was going for a play off the old TV game-show which gave Johnny Carson his start (no, really, I was) but then abandoned the idea of making a reference to the show seeing as how I never saw it and probably fewer have even heard of it ... but then I kept the title as the subject heading anyway.
  24. Fill in the blank: You've just been handed tickets to an upcoming Mets game and, because you've checked the schedule and realize it could be a real important one for the stretch drive (work with me here, OK?), your first thought is; "Oh, I really hope ________ is pitching that night." In other words, without muddling up your answer by bringing in factors such as age, future hopes, general likability, or grading on a curve due to salary & expectations, which one of the current starters would you currently trust the most to put in a good outing on a given night?
  25. Gee - 2.2 Igarashi - 0.3 Carrasco - 1.0 Isringhausen - 0.5 Wright - 1.5 Bay - 1.5 Paulino - 1.8 Reyes - 1.2
