  1. Just as it was looking like we were going to go the entire season without races in either league, the 'Merican League is starting to get interesting. The Yanx losing 4 straight, while always fun, will probably mean nothing in the long run as they lead the Sawx by 2.5 games and have a 7.0 game lead over any potential WC teams. But Boston, losers of 9 of their last 12, have not only gone from ahead of the Yanx to behind them but their slide has also brought the long-assumed dead WC race back into play. Tampa - winners of 6 of their last 7 - is now just 4.5 behind Boston, and the Angels, in the midst of their own 6-of-7 streak, are in a double race as they sit 5.0 back in the WC and just 1.5 behind West-leading Texas. So basically it's a four-way race for two spots. Boston - in addition to being without both Beckett & Youkilis for the near future at least - have to hold off both Tampa and the loser of the Tex-LAA race.

Except that I missed the part about Pridie & Thole being better OBA machines than Evans - and again, particularly so since Pridie & Thole were going to be used anyway ... meaning it comes down to WHO? instead of Evans: Satin (also a RHB)? Slow-footed RHB Paulino? Big bad Val who's more of a feast-or-famine guy than Nick? Bottom line for me is that I don't even think about hitting for Evans there and if we're going to blame this one on bad strategy I think we all know where the REAL problem was. That plus all the IF errors which played a part in every run the Cubs scored except for the Igarashi run which was clearly caused by too much Igarashi.
  3. Thole did too good of a job getting out of the way of that pitch.
  4. Edgy DC wrote: Evans instead of a leftie (Thole, Baxter, Pridie on the bench). Inneresting. Yeah, Evans can hit one out of the park and you need two PHs right afterward anyway. No problem sticking with Evans.
  5. Note to batters: 44 walks in 60-some innings pitched for Marmol Don't be a Marmol-aid and swing at shit.
  6. Bay getting picked off suxx here too because it delays getting back to the top of the order by one more batter. 7-8-9 slots due up.
  7. Gwreck wrote: Baaaaaaaaaad job by Terry there. Situation cried out for an intentional walk. As Ron noted on the broadcast, Campana is "half the hitter" that Ramirez is. The only down-side was bringing the possibility of the bases-loaded walk into play, but that's not enough of an excuse in my mind.
  8. Hey Reed Johnson, did that stupid excuse for a beard help you out at all there? I don't think so!
  9. Get me the head of LaHair lefty-swinging LaHair line-driving, go-'head running, got pinched-ran for LaHair
  10. I was surprised they sent Harris there with no outs and all. Fortunately the relay throw was botched otherwise there might have been a play.
  11. Would be a much better game so far if: - our fielders could field - the pitcher could bunt - the 1-2-3 hitters could get the ball out of the infield
  12. Dickey - 4.6 Stinson - 0.5 Acosta - 0.7 Reyes - 1.0 Duda - 1.5 Bay - 1.0 Nickeas - 0.7
  13. How about Turner's single that went over the fence? Ventura in the building tonight.. Since the grounds-rule double is automatic, as long as Turner actually reaches 2B (and he did) it counts as a double. Robin's problem is that he never even got that far because - like that guy in Tiananmen Square - he had a tank in front of him. There was actually a pre-1920 rule which only gave the batter credit for the hit that was "needed" in walk-off situations (not that they called them walk-offs back then ... not sure what phrase was in vogue with the ESPN geeks at the time). Ruth lost a HR off his total when he blasted one over the fence in a tie game with a runner on 1st and was only credited with a triple. A big debate arose at the time this was discovered as to whether to augment his total to 715 (this was during the time when Aaron was approaching the record) but the ultimate ruling was to stick to the scoring rules as they existed at the time.
  14. Gee - 1.8 Herrera - 0.4 Bay - 1.0 Harris - 0.4 Thole - 0.6 Reyes - 0.4 Pascucci - 0.4 Turner - 0.4
  15. Herrera - 1.0 Parnell - 0.2 Bay - 3.6 Duda - 1.2 Wright - 1.0 Evans - 0.4 Turner - 0.6
  16. Even when Pagan's fielding was top-notch in 2010 I still remember his throwing as, at best, nothing special, and, at worst, sub-par. This year it's been just plain awful which I think is even more obvious as his overall defense takes a nose-dive. both the triple safe call at third, and the subsequent out at the plate seemed like blown calls. truth? Yup. The wrong-ness of the one at home was less-clear, but probably still wrong.

  18. WOW!! When he hit that I didn't think it had anywhere near that kind of carry.
  19. bmfc1 wrote: Maybe I'm making excuses because I'm desperately looking for someone not to dislike from the 'pen, but the walk could have been strike 3, the first single was a broken bat bloop, and the tying hit was a ground ball. It's not like they hit ropes or even liners. Bay got burned by playing "no doubles" defense too. Most times I think he catches that ball. Acosta's biggest problem though was the walk. Yeah ball 4 could have gone either way, but still.
  20. So are Howie & Wayne making fun of Benitez tonight? ... just curious.
  21. Not that he was likely to have gotten him in this case, but Pagan's next good throw from the OF will be his first. Just tonight he's had two throws and both of them have been awful.
  22. I am shocked to discover that we're playing the Cubs, for several reasons: 1) It's real late in the year 2) I wasn't sure they were still in the NL or in professional baseball for that matter 3) I'm pretty sure they were once a regular rival but now we haven't played them in like three years or something.
  23. It just all leads me to wonder how many things will be screwed up (and warnings ignored) the next time things are fixed in the name of being able to use smaller circles when outlining divisions on a map.
  24. Except that what you're referring to as "accidental byproducts" were totally foreseeable consequences yet were just as totally ignored by those who thought the upside of the changes rendered all other problems non-existent. Scheduling messes, the inequities caused by uneven divisions and inter-league play, the sport's premier games taking place in late-October/November, the virtual non-existence of the gap between WC and division winner, etc., didn't just happen when the leagues were rearranged they happened as a direct result of them.
  25. Does anyone realize the irony in that most of these proposed alignment/scheduling/post-season "fixes" are designed as attempts to fix the things that were thrown out of whack from the last time they tried to fix things?
