  1. Phils have closed to 5-4 but just left two on in bottom 8 (Thome = K, Ruiz = Foul Out, both PH-ing) And the Rockies also jumped out to a 5-0 lead over an NL East team as they sent 10 to the plate in the 1st against Edwin Jackson and the Nats
  2. Kendrick still in there chucking. Certainly has settled down since his 5-run/4-hit/2-HR/1-BB opening six batters. Still 5-2 Buccos heading for bottom six
  3. Edgy DC wrote: That's Shmile Shmendrick on the mound for them. Just one day after they handed a start to Raul Valdes [2 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 2 BB and got hung with the loss] On the other hand, Chase Utley made his return last night with a HR in his season's first AB and a 3/5 overall.
  4. Also turned out to be a good day for guys named Murphy Daniel of NYM: 3 for 5 with 2 HRs David of Texas: 4 for 5 with 2 HRs
  5. Also, yesterday was a day for a lot of big scores - double digits all over the place. NYM offense still wins the prize but in addition to the game at Wrigley there was: * LAA 13 - Balt 1 * Boston 10 - Jays 4 * ChiSox 12 - Twins 5 * Tex 13 - Det 9 * Nats 11 - Rox 5 * Pitt 11 - Phils 7 OK so there was was the Astros beating the Pads 1-0 plus the Giants tossing a bagel at the Dodgers for the 3rd straight game but, you know how it is out on the left coast, always have to be the contrarians.
  6. Niese - 2.0 Wright - 2.0 Murphy - 2.0 Hairston - 1.8 Davis - 2.0 Tejada - 0.2
  7. 4th team in history to have four players each with four or more RBIs in the same game -- or so says some crawl across the bottom of a screen. A quirky and totally meaningless stat to be sure, but shirley an oddity to score 17 runs and have all of them driven in by just four players.

  9. Turner in for Wright, so David's day in done.
  10. Freaking Indians loaded the bases with one out then went K - BB - FO and so lost by one. No word on how many non-catches were tallied as outs.

  12. So, in typical MFY fashion, on the day Pettitte exits early and successor's Epply & Rapada combine to give up more hits than outs, Freakin' Freddie Garcia pitches 2-1/3 of perfect relief while the bats tack on a few. 5-3 Skanks in the 9th although Soriano is in a bit of trouble.
  13. Gary reminds us that on a wind-blowing-out day in Wrigley (and, left unmentioned, our pen) you may wind up needing all these runs - and maybe more!

  15. Three bad base-running plays* by Starling in one inning. That's impressive. Between that and the [u:2b0cj1rr]Seven[/u:2b0cj1rr] walks he had coming into this series (we've somehow walked him twice) is part of what makes him so frustrating to Cubs fans despite his awesome raw talent. It's too early to make any real comparisons, but he almost has a bit of Shawon Dunston ring to it maybe. * twice failed to advance on throws and then got caught sleeping off 1st
  16. When Jeter first set the MFY hit record it was three hundred or so hits ago. He has since passed the likes of Brett, Gwynn, Yount (and will pass Ripken with another two hits) so NOW the Yanx record is higher than KC, SD, Milw and soon-to-be Balt (and maybe a couple others - I'd have to check) but it wasn't then. And the larger point is that, among all the MFY career offensive records, Hits was the least impressive. Ruth spent a half-dozen years being neither a hitter nor a Yanqui, Gehrig had his career cut short, Mantle walked too much and was two years into retirement by the time he was Jeter's age, Berra caught and so never had the 700+ PA seasons that Jeter has regularly, Dimaggio retired young plus missed several years to the military. and so on.
  17. Also: Sabathia to DL with a strained I-Don't-Wanna-Go-To-The-All-Star-Game. That's the line of the day. Although it's probably more along the lines of 'I was ordered not to go to the ASG' Now the only problem with that strategy is that Pettitte just took a liner off his foot and had to leave the game.
  18. The only slightly annoying thing about that Costas comment is that it fails to note that the Yanqui mark for hits was itself not all that high on the list of team marks. I'm too lazy now to re-look-up the stats, but I remember checking it out at the time Jeter was approaching the mark (to great fanfare from some camps) and finding that it was around average among all teams and lower than that of most of the non-expansion franchises. If context matters then it shouldn't just matter on one side.
  19. A few legacy players who were drafted earlier this month that I don't believe we noted (aside from LJ Mazzilli in other words): - #580 overall (19th round) to Minnesota: Jonathan Murphy out of Jacksonville University; brother of Daniel. Already playing in the GCL - #612 to Baltimore -- Ryan Ripken, son of Cal Jr. -- Drafted out of HS, probably won't sign - #757 to the Yanx - Joe Table Jr. - #911 to Seattle - Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of HoFer Carl - #990 to the Cards - Eduardo Oquendo, son of Jose - #1008 to the Nationals out of HS - Jake Jefferies, son of Gregg. Maybe he grew up swinging in the kiddie pool. - #1046 by the Dodgers out of USC - Jordan Hershiser, son of Orel. Already playing with AZL team - #1106 by the Dodgers out of HS - Jose Vizcaino, son of Jose
  20. Dickey - 1.0 Parnell - 0.5 Torres - 1.6 Tejada - 1.2 Wright - 1.0 Duda - 0.7 Cedeno - 0.7 Rottino - 0.3
  21. Young - 2.8 Byrdak - 0.2 Hefner - 0.3 Nieuwenhuis - 1.2 Murphy - 0.5 Quintanilla - 0.5 Valdespin - 0.5 Thole - 0.5
  22. Tying run or not, I think I prefer Q here instead of Ike. or not
  23. 23 walks in 20 IPs !! Geez, that's high even for Marmol.
  24. Zvon wrote: That was in incredibly quick hook...but yea, Ike did touch him with his glove. Yeah, but that's not what got him thrown out. Whatever he said following that must have been a doozy though.
  25. Is it even possible to get an error wrung up in this stadium?
