  1. Brian Downing is the first guy I remember who showed up at ST all bulked up with nowhere to go - but the Dykstra example is certainly the one that hit closest to home. On the other hand, no one was willing to say as much out loud at that time, probably for fear of lawsuits. A few years later, the Washington Post's Tom Boswell referred to steroids as a 'Jose Conseco cocktail' but had to retract it under pressure for a lack of evidence even though it was glaringly true and later admitted to (hell, bragged about) by the subject himself.
  2. Plus the standards for baseball greatness--unlike those discussions involving basketball players and quarterbacks--don't seem nearly as obsessed with counting the number of titles as a starting point.
  3. The "in the best shape of his life" articles* leading into spring training are one of those which is in just about every beat writer's template. They may even occasionally be accurate. * the Ventura one I think it was about him having taken up martial arts? over that winter
  4. "He wants to go out like Michael Jordan" What, playing for the Wizards? Is it even possible for a top player to go out any worse than Jordan? Well, Joe Jackson I guess, but not too many others.
  5. Why even wait for Jeter to retire? Just hold a special election this weekend so we can get them both in by August.

  7. No, they waived the five year rule for Clemente too. The special election for Gehrig was to get him in before he died but there was no five-year rule at the time!
  8. Edgy MD wrote: It's, like, evil Brooke Shields. That was my first reaction also.
  9. Apparently Matt has recovered - and the name of his rehab program is Ashley Haas. Ashley, shockingly, has recently signed a modeling deal!
  10. Perhaps the lack of pictures is due to a sudden shortage of wide angle lenses in eastern Florida?
  11. The only names I ever heard were Cliff and also Daryl Hamilton. On the other hand, we also don't know who was mentioning them or how often, only that reports that there was talk about wanting a former player in the booth. That speculation from that immediately jumps to making this a direct Jeff Wilpon project is simply par for the course.
  12. MLB names Justin Klemm 'Director of Instant Replay' "Klemm* has been executive director of Minor League Baseball's Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation since 2008. He will be based in New York and report to MLB senior vice president of baseball operations Peter Woodfork. Klemm will be responsible for managing the umpires at the Replay Command Center, handling supervisor staffing at the facility and, along with the technology director at MLBAM, helping to coordinate the procedural configuration with all 30 teams." * wasn't there an old umpire Bill Klem?
  13. And the contract--which appears to be for just one year--implies that they view this move more as a means to buy themselves some extra time than as a solution.
  14. btw, the Yanx final scheduled game/series for this year? ... Fenway Park

  16. btw, Jeter's closest career comp? Craig Biggio Somehow, however, I don't think Derek is going to have to sweat the first two, three really and who knows how many more, H-o-F votes. Jeter currently sits 10th in all time hits, only 3 behind Paul Molitor for 9th. With 100+ this season he'll pass not only Molitor but also Yastrzemski, Wagner & Anson for 6th. Needs 199 to break into the top 5 Of course it wasn't long ago when some YLDBs were simply doing the 200 per/yr math and projecting him for 4,000 and possibly for passing both Cobb & Rose. Problem with that math is, as Shaq once said to a reporter wondering about why he wasn't playing the way he once did: "38 ain't 28 dude" With a good season in 2014 (and a REALLY good one for age 40) he'll get to where he's only 500 short of 4,000 and about 750 short of catching Rose.
  17. Bree Yocum. You're kidding, right?

  19. G-Fafif wrote: He wore 2, an accident of Pinstripe history. In reality, he was always 1. 1 in our hearts. 1 above all others on the field. The 1 to whom we all looked for guidance, inspiration and superlative-defying performance in life's clutch. And as the 1, he delivered time and time again. The only opponent he didn't choose to conquer was time itself, preferring instead to leave the universe in balance. The universe, on the other hand, weeps for the 1 who gave it its purpose. The universe hosted Derek Jeter. Derek Jeter defined the universe. Come season's end, the universe loses its sense of purpose. And so do the rest of us. Please tell me that this is sarcasm, the Onion, National Lampoon come back to life, ANYTHING! ... because I don't want to live in a world where someone who gets paid to write for a living writes something like that for real. And, let's face it, we all the reason behind the timing for all this: Jeter figured out a way where he never has to set foot on a field with Alex Rodriguez again.
  20. Let the retirement tours, the written odes, and the calls for the repeal of the five-year HoF waiting list begin.
  21. sharpie wrote: Ex=MFY douchebag AJ Burnett to Phillies for 1 yr/$16 mil. Not all that surprising as this had been rumored and comes on the heels of the news that Cole Hamels won't be ready for the beginning of the season due to biceps tendinitis. Claims he'll pitch in April, just not in time for O.D.
  22. Otherwise he really would have come out of the bathroom with just his dick in his hand.
  23. Good. I found the rumors of wanting to install an ex-jock as sidekick (Cliff Floyd and Daryl Hamilton were mentioned) seemingly for no other reason other than to add an ex-jock to your stable, to be a silly strategy at best, particularly so on the radio side where precise and timely in-action descriptions are important.
  24. Yeah, the draft pick associated with signing Drew can range anywhere from #11 overall to maybe 80th or so, so obviously the value is going to vary widely depending on which team does the inking. Also, by linking this process to [u:f77o4p95]Career[/u:f77o4p95] WAR assumes that the team that foregoes the FA to make keep that pick is going to get all that value, something that's not likely. IOW, your mileage may vary.
  25. Without yet reading the linked arguments, my guy reaction is that 1988 & 2006 were the most frustrating as we clearly had the better team in both those seasons. '73 to me, despite my youth, was probably the least frustrating, and '99 was a helluva ride where you felt like the underdog the whole time making each round and each individual win a joy in itself. But the 2000 post-season has a frustration all its own due, of course, to the opponent. Add to that that we were probably the better team there too despite the lopsided previous half-decade, that all the losses (and the lone win for that matter) were 1 or 2 run games, and mainly to the fact that the team just played so shitty in those five games.
