  2. Not that I intentionally left Bono out of the little roster up top (just wanted to throw some names out really) but I guess the success of U-2's 'Angel of Harlem', along with the front man's big mouth/ego, tends to tab him as the go-to guy when talking about how American soul influenced European kids. And while that viewpoint certainly merits inclusion in a docu like this, it's not like he brings anything to the discussion that Mick & Keith--with their more era-appropriate views and, oh yeah, actual monster cuts recorded there vibe--couldn't and didn't add. I too would have liked to see/hear more of the southern rock era.
  3. Last year I thought he was going to be sent back down at the first available opportunity, but his ML numbers turned out to be better than his minor league ones and he wound up doing a halfway decent job. He's not a young guy (27 before this season is out) so probably what we see is what we're gonna get.

  6. Yeah, I'm less convinced than some that he's in the lead to be a full-time starter.
  7. I agree that the runners caught stat is hardly a given to repeat. His arm is good but not overwhelming and we all know that weak and/or erratic OF arms are often at or near the top of the league in assists. But it's hard to imagine that his first-step jumps and seemingly perfect routes aren't skills that'll show up at the park virtually everyday and yield a net-plus whether that asset shows up in a quantifiable stat or not.
  8. So based on the idea that you never know in advance which plays are going to be reviewed and what the outcome of such review might be, TB manager Joe Madden is reportedly instructing his players on the concept of playing 'until the 4th out' this season. The idea being that if your runners keep running or your fielders make sure to get the ball back into the infield even though the apparent third out has been made, where your (or their) runners are placed following a reversal might be to your benefit.
  9. Cole Hamels and his self-described "dead arm" looking increasing UNlikely for availability in the month of April.
  10. I see him as getting both starts and relief appearances, and probably more of the latter.
  11. The game featured a replay review. Cardinal runner out on a caught stealing. Play looked close all along (he even looked safe at least as much as out) but the replay affirmed the call in what seemed like maybe 90 seconds or so.
  12. Hey, it's positive publicity and it'll be picked up by at least a few peeps who have no idea of our existence so it's nothing to sneeze at.
  13. That was so kool those guys did that. James Preller seems like a very kool nice guy. I also said that the CPF was a great place to hang and watch a game with other fans but that wasn't included. Yeah it was: I shared these digital cards with my on-line Met friends at the Crane Pool Forum [link included] and they liked them. Great small group of Mets fans there.
  14. 3 more E's today: Murphy, Tejada, Brown That's several games I've noticed so far with multiple errors DiceK = 2 runs over 2 on 6 hits, 1 BB, 3 K Lannan = 2 runs over 2 on 3 hits Montero = 1 run over 2 on 1 hit Matz = 1 inning, 1 hits, 1 BB, 3 Ks HRs: Recker & Brown 5-3 Cards in the 7th
  15. MLB has a lot of problems with the time and pacing of the game (and nobody's been a bigger noodge around here about this than me). But I don't think that either the size or enforcement of the strike zone are anywhere near the top of the list of culprits.
  16. MFS62 wrote: Deford was the editor of the old National sports weekly newspaper. He was also a long-time established writer prior to that. There's a lot to be said about the strengths and weaknesses of the short-lived NATIONAL, but that (or this strike-zone idea) shouldn't be the lone things on which Frank Deford is judged. btw, the NATIONAL was a daily, not a weekly.
  17. Deford is a great writer and has been for a long time - and doesn't normally come across as the old fogey clinging to the past. I just don't think he's thought this one through very well.
  18. Swinging (generally) leads to more contact. Not always good contact and more hits aren't necessarily the result, but more balls in play.
  19. metirish wrote: 14 wins - 8 losses 2.95 ERA - 30 starts - stays the season, with that contract they would have to eat most of it and what they would get back would be what?, might as well keep him. I think he will do well. Won't be the last time that phrase is used in a Bartolo Colon assessment.
  20. - I'm not sure I get how StL is 'further south' (symbolically speaking) now than they were in recent years, particularly than they were in the days when they were MLB's most southern (and western) town prior to the mid-50s, and when the signal from KMOX radio made them even mores. I mean unless the shift of Mizzou to the SEC has caused some sort of wild mind-set alterations I'm not sure I quite buy this guy's explanations. - I always looked at that whole 'BFiB' thing (as the Astros fans I used to kibbutz with would derisively mock the 'Best Fans ...' label) was a concoction of FOX and their StL-heavy crew (Buck, McCarver) and that Cards fans picked it up from there and ran with it. -
  21. Reading up a bit on the Braves and their young players: - They got a higher WAR out of their under-25s last season (18.2) than any other team, more in fact than the bottom 11 teams got combined - the next closest team was the Angels with 12 WAR from their under 25s, but 11 of that was from Trout alone - of the long-term deals the Braves just gave out, the oldest player they're on the hook for is Freddie Freeman who'll be 31 in the final year of his new eight-year contract That IS working, that's the way ya do it.
  22. Rush & Sean can add 'too many day games' to their standard complaint about 'too many gay dames'.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: What do we think of Nimmo instead of Flores? I think the current consensus is that Nimmo has the higher ceiling but also lower floor. IOW, being further away from the majors Nimmo could still whiff on a big league career entirely, but also has the more rounded tool set that makes his potential upside better than Flores who's limited by his glove & speed and is at an age where he's what you see now is closer to what you're going to get. How one wants to view those differences for trade purposes depends on the particular needs and wants of both the trading and receiving teams. I suspect that if the Mets had a specific trade on the hook right now and that to complete it they were given the choice of including either Flores & Nimmo that they'd opt to deal Flores and keep Nimmo, but that's purely a guess on my part.
